Description

“King has stepped onto the sacred literary preserve of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, poached Holmes, and brilliantly brought him to life again.” ― The Washington Post Book World “A fascinating and often moving account of a friendship so unusual and so compelling that one almost accepts it as being historically real.” ― The Denver Post “Enchanting... The Beekeeper's Apprentice is real Laurie R. King, not faux Conan Doyle, and for my money, it's better than the original.” ― San Jose Mercury News “Rousing...Riveting...Suspenseful.” ― Chicago Sun-Times “Wonderfully original and entertaining...absorbing from beginning to end.” ― Booklist “Remarkably beguiling.” ― The Boston Globe In 1915, long since retired from his crime-fighting days, Sherlock Holmes is engaged in a reclusive study of honeybees on the Sussex Downs. Never did the Victorian detective think to meet an intellect matching his own-until his acquaintance with Miss Mary Russell, a young twentieth-century lady whose mental acuity is equaled only by her penchant for deduction, disguises, and danger. Under Holmes's reluctant tutelage, Russell embarks on a case involving a landowner's mysterious fever and the kidnapping of an American senator's daughter in the wilds of Wales. Then a near-fatal bomb on her doorstep-and another on Holmes's-sends the two sleuths on the trail of a murderer who scatters bizarre clues and seems utterly without motive. The villain's objective, however, is quite unequivocal: to end Russell and Holmes's partnership-and then their lives. Laurie R. King is the Edgar Award–winning author of the Kate Martinelli novels and the acclaimed Mary Russell-Sherlock Holmes mysteries, as well as a few stand-alone novels. The Beekeeper’s Apprentice , the first in her Mary Russell series, was nominated for an Agatha Award and was named one of the Century’s Best 100 Mysteries by the Independent Mystery Booksellers Association. A Monstrous Regiment of Women won the Nero Wolfe Award. She has degrees in theology, and besides writing she has also managed a coffee store and raised children, vegetables, and the occasional building. She lives in northern California. Read more

Non-traditional Sherlock Holmes with an unlikeable main character. If your a romance fan you'll be like this.

If I could give 1/2 a star I would. I was hoping for a fun adventure featuring Sherlock Holmes and Mary Russell... Instead I read a story that was so slow to read, I almost gave up within a hundred pages. The writer introduces Mary Russell, she was instantly obnoxious and arrogant. I can see what L.King was trying to do, establish Mary Russell as the young female version of Sherlock. However, this reader found Mary to be unlikable, rude and without substance. Then L.King establishes a bond between Sherlock and Mary, and begins to build on that relationship by having them team up to solve a few small mysteries. None of the small stories are entertaining or reminiscent of traditional Holmes adventures and last 10-20 pages. Once you finally get into the larger murder mystery it's dry, without the cleverness or cunning you'd expect to see from Holmes ... or in this case Mary. The story withdraw allow you to examine clues or attempt to solve the mystery yourself. Once the ending drew near the bond between Sherlock and Mary grows into an almost sick romantic relationship. If you like romance novels read this drivel. If your looking for a traditional pastiche .. Keep looking cause you'll be horribly disappointed.

Sherlock Continues

I have always loved Sherlock Holmes and this is a wonderful addition to his story. I just found this book. I do not know how I missed it all of these years.Mary is a perfect partner for him. A brilliant young woman with intelligence to match him and a personality that will stand up to him. It is wonderfully structured as Mary as an older woman has chosen to give the author her diaries so that the memory of the real Sherlock does not die. This book is for anyone who loves Sherlock Holmes or loves strong, intelligent female characters. I am on to reading the next book in the series.

Great Book

I shied away from this because I've read one or two that supposedly involved Sherlock Holmes and were real stinkers. I finally decided to try this and from the first few pages was immediately enthralled. I have since bought all of her books in this series and have reread a few. Good characters, exciting stories - love 'em.

20th Anniversary: Wonderful Intro, cheap binding

The 20th anniversary edition contains a wonderful introduction by the author; however, this is the most lackluster and overpriced "special" edition book that I've ever seen. The cheap binding makes it almost impossible to fully open the book without cracking the back spine. Truly disappointing.

A nice take on Holmes

I enjoyed this book, and the prose was magnificent. Laurie R. King is a joy to read. While some spots got wordy, for the most part, the author made me feel rather intelligent. The wording was so fitting for the characters, and I loved Sherlock in a different way, on a positive note. Not sure I could binge on the series, but I would read another.

Story great, condition of book bad

The story was very good, but I was quite disappointed with the condition of the book. It had come away from the binding in the front and the back and was literally being held together with tape. Not worth the $17.95 SpoonCorp charged.
