Description

From School Library Journal K-Gr 2—Born in New York in 1917, Fitzgerald grew up in a time when jazz musicians were popular—and she never missed a chance to see them perform in Harlem. As a teenager, she won a talent contest at the Apollo Theatre and this launched her singing career, one that would span 50 years. Fitzgerald was the first African American woman to win a Grammy and she recorded more than 2,000 songs in her own distinctive style. Vegara highlights a few aspects of Fitzgerald's life. Colorful, one-dimensional drawings fill the pages from edge to edge and the brief text of two or three sentences is located on alternate pages. A fact section and contemporary photographs complete the brief volume. This title's brevity might encourage readers to explore additional sources and perhaps inspire them to listen to and learn more about jazz music. Mother dies on the second page.

I opened this with my 2 year old and started reading it and immediately had to ad-lib the second couple of pages. The pictures in this book are wonderful, but there's no story. It's just a series of events in Ella's life and some descriptions of her singing.

So Much Talent

Reading about Ella Fitzgerald's talent, versatility, willingness/ability to try different genres, and how she put her own spin on songs each time she sang them is so inspirational and uplifting. Learning about her young adulthood was heartbreaking, but also inspirational because of what she eventually accomplished.

Cute addition to any library!

Sweet little book. It’s become a tradition to get my daughter one of these and a matching Barbie at Christmas. Illustrations are so cute, and these informative little books are a fresh addition to our library.

Incorrect information!

I did not purchase because the author has given the wrong birth place. Ms. Fitzgerald was in fact born in Newport News, VA. I know this because this is also my birthplace where she is definitely celebrated for her talent and vast contribution to the music world. Please give our wonderful city acknowledgment!!!
