Infinite and Alter in particular were pure expressions of the physical and psychological...discomfort I've been experiencing over the past five years. Having ruled out a brain tumor, cured Bartonellosis, and tested negative for a litany of other things, there are two remaining theories for my symptoms: an autoimmune disease or...it's all in my head--which honestly feels right. That doesn't mean I'm crazy (though everything else in The Dark might), or that I'm making it up. It means that the Bartonella might have rewired my nervous system so that when I'm exposed to the same emotional stimuli experienced during my illness (stress, anxiety, or fear), I experience the same symptoms as though I'm still sick! Brains are weird.This concept, of neural pathways being rewired when illness and stressful life events overlap, is new to me, and it's very interesting, so I decided to put Miah, in The Dark , through analogous experiences, processing along with him in a way that I think anyone with a chronic illness, PTSD, or a shred of empathy can understand. Does that mean The Dark is an angst-filled whine-fest? Not at all. Miah faces his issues as I attempt to: head-on, with good humor, and with a hope that the future will be better. He even explores some options that I have yet to try. His unique perspective on pain and life makes him the perfect character to follow through the twisted events that unfold in The Dark , mirroring what it's like living with chronic illness, whether that be physical, mental, or both.Hell on Earth?
