Description

Since 1973, Rick Steves has spent about four months a year exploring Europe. His mission: to empower Americans to have European trips that are fun, affordable, and culturally broadening. Rick produces a best-selling guidebook series, a public television series, and a public radio show, and organizes small-group tours that take over 20,000 travelers to Europe annually. He does all of this with the help of a hardworking, well-traveled staff of 100 at Rick Steves' Europe in Edmonds, Washington, near Seattle. When not on the road, Rick is active in his church and with advocacy groups focused on economic justice, drug policy reform, and ending hunger. To recharge, Rick plays piano, relaxes at his family cabin in the Cascade Mountains, and spends time with his partner Trish, son Andy, and daughter Jackie. Steve Smith manages tour planning for Rick Steves' Europe tour program and has been researching guidebooks with Rick for two decades. Fluent in French, he's lived in France on several occasions, starting when he was seven. Steve owns a restored farmhouse in rural Burgundy where he hangs his beret in research season. Steve's wife, Karen Lewis Smith - who is an expert on French cuisine and wine - provides invaluable contributions to his books. Gene Openshaw is a writer, composer, tour guide, and lecturer on art and history. Specializing in writing walking tours of Europe's cultural sights, Gene has coauthored 10 of Rick's books and contributes to Rick's public television series. As a composer, Gene has written a full-length opera (Matter), a violin sonata, and dozens of songs. He lives near Seattle with his daughter, and roots for the Mariners in good times and bad.

I wish I could give it 10 stars!

This book was invaluable on my recent 5 day trip to Paris! I did my research beforehand and went through the book and was able to make a good plan of the things that I really wanted to see. It helped me not waste a lot of time trying to figure things out and really made my whole visit more comfortable and enjoyable! Definitely read through the book, or at least pursue the first part of the book before you travel and you'll be good to go!
There were SO many helpful everyday hints that a lot of guidebooks just gloss over, or don't talk about at all! It was really like I was traveling with a tour guide. It even went into French customs and how not to stand out like a horrible tourist! We did the Montmartre walk, outlined in the book and it made for a wonderful day. The pull out map was super handy too because I could have it just folded in my hand and it didn't make me stand out as a tourist too much by holding a giant touristy map.
The pages are a little thin, but that was fine by me because it crammed so much information into a book that wasn't too big or heavy to carry around in my purse every day.

Useful

A really helpful guide. I wanted to become familiar with Paris prior to my trip and I have it all down now. Loved the advice on the museum pass; the audio tours that can be downloaded so you can do self- guided tours throughout Paris. I didn't use the hotel section. The food section is full of useful options so now I can rest assure there are choices for those who don't eat meat. Great value. I think this is perfect if you are looking to do Paris on a budget. I highly recommend this book and will be taking it with me.

I was able to plan out an itinerary and felt like I knew what to expect

This book was our Bible during our first trip to Paris. Planning our trip felt so daunting and overwhelming until I got this guide! I was able to plan out an itinerary and felt like I knew what to expect. I will say that everyone there speaks English and 85% of the menus had English on them as well, so the language barrier was pretty much non-existent. And be sure to SIGN your metro ticket or else they can fine you!!! The next trip I take I’m checking to see if there’s a Rick Steves guidebook!!!

I love the advice Rick Steves offers

I love the advice Rick Steves offers, and rely on his guides for European travel. As an avid traveler and veteran (female) history teacher, I was very surprised and offended by the information regarding Army Museum and Napoleon’s Tomb Tour. On page 240 “ Length of this tour: Women-two hours, men- three hours.” When I shared this with my high school students they immediately asked for the copyright date. One female student said, I suppose we can’t do math either-get with it Rick Steves.

BEFORE YOU BUY...BE WARNED...

BEFORE YOU BUY THIS BOOK, BE WARNED....
The entire book, except the first few pages, is printed in black and white on very flimsy, grayish-tinted NEWSPRINT.
Detailed maps, in the absence of color, are virtually impossible to decipher and therefore useless to the traveler.
What a nerve! What a scam!.
Illustrations/photos of which there are quite a few, are postage-stamped size and, again, in black and white.
I'll never buy another book by this author and will likely return this one.

Don't leave home without it.

Rick S delivers again. I've used his guides for years and will in the future. He covers details like no other. The paper is cheap. The photos are fuzzy. The graphics are crude. In these areas he can't compete with DK. But the details are where he stands head and shoulders above the rest.

Rick Steeves is the best. I have been to Paris before

Rick Steeves is the best. I have been to Paris before, but I saw so many more things (big and little) that I had never noticed before thanks to this guide. We downloaded Rick's app and followed along a couple of excellent audio walking tours that are also detailed in the book, specifically Historic Paris and Montmartre. We haf planned to visit the Catacombs, but the employees were on strike when we got there, so we turned to Rick for a plan B. The guide recommended the Montparnasse tower in that area, which ended up being awesome and came with a 30% discount with the book! What a great compliment to seeing the most beautiful city in the world!

Thorough but easy to read

Bought this for an upcoming trip to Paris. It's a family trip and our first. A friend recommended this book as the bast guide book and he spends 3-4 weeks in Paris every year. So far it's great. Very thorough and detailed but chatty and easy to read.
