Description

Since 1973, Rick Steves has spent about four months a year exploring Europe. His mission: to empower Americans to have European trips that are fun, affordable, and culturally broadening. Rick produces a best-selling guidebook series, a public television series, and a public radio show, and organizes small-group tours that take over 30,000 travelers to Europe annually. He does all of this with the help of more than 100 well-traveled staff members at Rick Steves' Europe in Edmonds, WA (near Seattle). When not on the road, Rick is active in his church and with advocacy groups focused on economic and social justice, drug policy reform, and ending hunger. To recharge, Rick plays piano, relaxes at his family cabin in the Cascade Mountains, and spends time with his son Andy and daughter Jackie. Rick Steves’ travel books are the best by far!

I lived in Spain for 3 years, taught Spanish language and culture for 42 years, and led over a dozen student study/travel/home-stay groups to multiple cities in Spain. Now that I’m retired I am planning my own trips with friends and families and thought I’d give Rick Steve’s a chance. I intended to simply “double-check” my work but ended up learning so much more about the country I love. Kudos to Rick and his team for producing the most thorough travel books I’ve seen and used.

Small Towns Are Missing

Don’t bother if you’re not going to the most tourists areas. I guess I’ve put grown Rick Steves. Planning a trip from Porto to San Sebastián and this is a terrible book. The Portugal book is just as useless if you plan to go north from Porto to Spain and nothing more in Spain. Many of the great small towns I’d expect Rick to visit aren’t even in the index. If you’re on a major city your if Spain you could consider it.

Rick Steves for the win!

I used this book to help plan a 10 day trip with 8 days in Spain and two days in Morocco. I packed it in my bag, and I was so glad I did. Two days into the trip, my husband’s phone was lost, so we were trying to conserve my remaining phone battery. We started using the book more, and eventually ended up using his walking tours for several cities and sights. We learned a lot of useful information that helped us really learn about where we were and what we were looking at (and sometimes not seeing on our own). By the end of the trip, our running joke was “Rick Steves for the win” because his book led us to so many amazing experiences we never learned about with mere web-searching. Buying goodies via lazy Susan from the nuns in Sevilla, the river walk in Granada, Zambra caves, a beautiful hotel in Tangier...this book made our vacation A+. Thank you, Rick Steves!

Rick Steves is Always a Classic

If you’re heading to a European country, you can’t go wrong with a Rick Steves travel guide. I like that he rates the attractions with stars and candidly tells you what’s worth seeing and what you can afford to skip. And for museums like the Prado, he has guides that take you to all the important art works in case you don’t have all day to wander around and just want to hit the famous stuff. We were in Barcelona, Madrid, and Granada earlier this year, and Rick Steve’s book was a real help.

A MUST HAVE book if you're traveling to Spain!

This book was worth every single penny! We had never traveled abroad before, and someone recommended this. It gave the best tips ever. It provided us with so many valuable tips (how and where to exchange currency, public transportation, etc.). We checked out so many of the sights and restaurants that he recommended and were never disappointed. I also liked that he would give little tricks on how to best optimize your time, i.e. when we went to one of the museums and didn't have a lot of time, the booked literally walked us through the museum (go to this doorway and turn left, go up these stairs, etc.) and told us the exhibits that were most recommended. Could not have made this the perfect vacation without this book!

Rick Steve never lets us down!

Rick Steve is our go-to guy for travel guides! Sadly, we are booked for travel in May, but will probably have to cancel soon. We will go later, so I'll study this from cover to cover!
