Description

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 2-Santat and Willems pair up a hilarious installment in the series with a hysterical portrayal of metafiction for kids. Harold and Hog are huge fans of Gerald and Piggie. So much so, they decide to play dress up and pretend to be them. Harold dons glasses, and Hog wears a "Piggie" nose over his own, but it is far more of a challenge when it comes to embodying their personalities. Hog is not as carefree as Piggie, and Harold doesn't quite understand what it means to be careful like Gerald. This realization is a test of Harold and Hog's friendship-how can they be best friends like Gerald and Piggie if they can't be like them? Just as in every "Elephant and Piggie" book, friendship is tested and readers are led to a satisfying ending. Santat's detailed art style mirrors Willems's simplicity, but is distinct enough to let readers know that they are in a different world than his. Willems's readers will be thrilled at the choices that Santat makes in art and text, subtle and overt. Whether if it's picking up on the "stage" they create or when a familiar Easter egg is used, all will have readers rolling with laughter. VERDICT A fun addition for most libraries, perfect for fans of Gerald and Piggie.-Danielle Jones, Multnomah County Library, ORα(c) Copyright 2011. #piggieforlife

This book is about a real pig and a real elephant that pretend to be Gerald and Piggie. This is imaginative collaboration work between Mo WIllems and Dan Santat. This book has the signpost Contrast and Contradictions because Harold is carefree but Hog is careful. There is also an Aha moment in the story where Harold and Hog learn that what you look on the outside doesn't determine who you are on the inside.

We thought this book was amusing and we liked the realistic pictures. It is a short, easy read that anyone can enjoy. Written by Ms. M's 6th grade class.

A Santat and Willems collaboration: genius!

In "Harold and Hog Pretend for Real!" the Elephant and Piggie formula gets turned on its ear. Harold and Hog are the "real" counterparts to Elephant and PIggie ... or are they? As these best friends pretend to be Elephant and Piggie, it becomes clear that Harold is more like Piggie and Hog is more like Gerald the elephant. What will they do?

Seeing how Harold and Hog tackle this conundrum, and its effect on their friendship, is hilarious. And even better, there is a great lesson hidden in all that comedy. It's perfect for beginning readers, and this adult was thoroughly entertained too! Highly recommend this book -- another win for Dan Santat and Mo Willems!

Dan and Mo Make an AMAZING Team

I absolutely love this book!!! Elephant and Piggie are a HUGE part of my life, both in my classroom and my home. When I heard that Dan Santat was creating an Elephant and Piggie Like Reading book, I knew it was going to be amazing! I laughed and laughed while reading this book for the first time! I think I appreciated the humor more than my students did, however my own children got the various references. I highly recommend this book and hope that Dan and Mo team up in the future again very soon!

Fun for Fans of Mo Willems

My sons (8y and 6y) LOVED this book. It was easy for them to read, and they both giggled at the story. They also talked about it with each other after they finished, then read it again!
If your kids aren't familiar with the Elephant & Piggie books, they should probably read a few from the series before reading this one.

eh.

we are big Mo williams fans, but my 5 year old son and 8 year old daughter did not really like reading this. Especially my younger one, he couldn't really get into it.

Nothing like the other Piggie and Gerald Books

We own all of the Piggie and Gerald books, and love them, so we were excited to see this offering. It is however, nothing like the other books. The text is a higher reading level than the rest of the books, so not a good fit for early readers. The book relies heavily on themes from the other books, so if you haven't read them, the jokes will fall flat. It has the feel of wanting to capitalize on the success of the Piggie and Gerald series, but without success.

Utterly hilarious!

This latest installment of the ‘Elephant and Piggie Love reading’ series is utterly hilarious! This is written and illustrated by Caldecott winning illustrator Dan Santat, and is all about Harold & Hog who are prentending to be their favorite characters but discover that they might need to do something different than they planned. It is hilarious, especially if you’ve read other Elephant & Piggie books.

Not a fun book to read

Story is boring and not easy to follow for a kid.
