Description

Orson Scott Card is best known for his science fiction novel Ender's Game and its many sequels that expand the Ender Universe into the far future and the near past. Those books are organized into the Ender Quintet, the five books that chronicle the life of Ender Wiggin; the Shadow Series, that follows on the novel Ender's Shadow and are set on Earth; and the Formic Wars series, written with co-author Aaron Johnston, that tells of the terrible first contact between humans and the alien "Buggers". Card has been a working writer since the 1970s. Beginning with dozens of plays and musical comedies produced in the 1960s and 70s, Card's first published fiction appeared in 1977--the short story "Gert Fram" in the July issue of The Ensign , and the novelette version of "Ender's Game" in the August issue of Analog . The novel-length version of Ender's Game , published in 1984 and continuously in print since then, became the basis of the 2013 film, starring Asa Butterfield, Harrison Ford, Ben Kingsley, Hailee Steinfeld, Viola Davis, and Abigail Breslin. Card was born in Washington state, and grew up in California, Arizona, and Utah. He served a mission for the LDS Church in Brazil in the early 1970s. Besides his writing, he runs occasional writers' workshops and directs plays. He frequently teaches writing and literature courses at Southern Virginia University. He is the author many sf and fantasy novels, including the American frontier fantasy series "The Tales of Alvin Maker" (beginning with Seventh Son ), There are also stand-alone science fiction and fantasy novels like Pastwatch and Hart's Hope . He has collaborated with his daughter Emily Card on a manga series, Laddertop. He has also written contemporary thrillers like Empire and historical novels like the monumental Saints and the religious novels Sarah and Rachel and Leah . Card's recent work includes the Mithermages books ( Lost Gate , Gate Thief ), contemporary magical fantasy for readers both young and old. Card lives in Greensboro, North Carolina, with his wife, Kristine Allen Card, He and Kristine are the parents of five children and several grandchildren.

Great Story!

I purchased this set back around Christmas time and just now got around to reading the first book from the set, and I was very pleasantly surprised by how well written it was and how enveloping the story is. Ender's Game is one of those books that are extremely easy to read, but at the same time, it is very complex and really can make you think about things.

At first, I was very hesitant about even seeing the Ender's Game film due to the fact that the main character is a child and I didn't think that the story would be as interesting or as compelling because in my personal opinion, some child characters are very simple. Ender is exactly the opposite of simple. Ender is a genius, and throughout the story, Ender analyzes behavior of others and scenarios better than many adults. Following him throughout the book was fun and kept me on the hook until the last page.

**Disclaimer**
The three books that come with this set are NOT the three first novels of the "Ender Quintet". The first book follows specifically Ender Wiggins. The other two books in the set are Ender's Shadow and Shadow of the Hegemon, which follow a supporting character in Ender's Game, Bean.

The Ender Quintet Series are listed as follows:
Ender's Game
Speaker for the Dead
Xenocide
Children of the Mind
Ender in Exile

The Shadow Series listed below:
Ender's Shadow
Shadow of the Hegemon
Shadow Puppets
Shadow of the Giant
Shadows in Flight

Those are the books listed above are in their respective series, but from what I've been told by others who have read some of the Shadow Series and the other books of the Ender Quintet, my guess is that in the Ender Universe, the three books in this set are in chronological order, so I assume that the events that take place in them happen during or after the events in Ender's Game, but they occur before events in the Speaker For the Dead (Book 2 of the Ender Quintet). Please correct me if I'm wrong; I'm just drawing from what I've read and heard.

Regardless, great novels and great Author. I don't think you'll be disappointed!

Distracting books for a good price

Got this for my high school aged son for a Christmas gift (on a lightning deal) - he's finished the first book and I've finished all 3 (while recovering from the flu). All books were a great distraction from not feeling great. I didn't know at the time that there are several ways the Ender books are split up and packaged for sale. This set includes one book about Ender and two books which mostly revolve a character called Bean (whose first story runs just about concurrently and includes alot of overlap with the Ender story). Now I wouldn't mind reading the two more Bean books and the other Ender book ("Speaker for the Dead") which seems to have gotten good reviews.

Not the first three books.

This review is based on the fact that these are not the first three books in the series. These are books 1, 6 and 7.

Nice set for a great price!

I received this set from a Lightning Deal. The price was fantastic and it is a good looking set. This follows Bean's story, not Ender's, in the sequels included. Haven't read the sequels yet but I'm looking forward to it.
