Description

Review “Simple, humorous cartoon illustrations on generous white space are created in ink and watercolor. Fun for read-alouds or read-alones.” ― Booklist “Kang and Weyant’s child-centric sensibilities are funny and empathetic. Humorous expressions and comedic timing lighten the rejection and anger oft stemming from young group dynamics. This friendship will likely face many more tests, but these pals are stronger because of this one.” ― Kirkus Reviews “[A] perfect choice for early readers. Pair with Mo Willems’s My New Friend Is So Fun! for an accessible read-aloud on friendship.” ― School Library Journal “I am excited to say that this may be one of my favorites of the series. I can really see young children connecting with our fuzzy friends and the challenge of welcoming in a new friend. I look forward to sharing more when we get closer to the release date.” ― KidLit Frenzy About the Author Anna Kang and Christopher Weyant are the creators of Theodor Seuss Geisel Award winner You Are (Not) Small as well as series titles That’s (Not) Mine , I Am (Not) Scared , and We Are (Not) Friends . Teach your toddler how to accept new friends.

This is an adorable story of two friends who add a new friend to their acquaintance. It addresses exclusion, bullying, lying, negotiation, and acceptance in a simplistic way that even a two year old can understand. Additional conversation may be necessary to convey the full meaning.

For the young ones, playing in a group doesn't come naturally

They could have named this, 'three's a crowd' because it's about two creatures (who are like kids) who play together happily, then are joined by a third and things get a little awkward. They rotate playing in pairs, but the third one is always unhappy. Then the pairs switch off, and again, the new third person isn't happy. And so it goes. They get into a discussion over who's friends with who, and argue over what games to play, and there's always someone who feels left out. Finally, they seem to have figured out how to make it work and they are all friends, when a fourth creature approaches and asks to join. Ack! This is for the youngest ones who are just learning to play together. It's realistic because, despite one's best efforts, playing in a group is tricky. Unfortunately it doesn't really provide solutions. Still, this is an introduction to the social skills at the most basic level. Some kids will definitely benefit from seeing the difficulties of group play explained, and parents can play a role in exploring social skills with them.

A fun story that will prompt conversations about friendship and empathy

Thank you to blue_slip_media and @barbfisch for the review copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

All of us knows how it feels when you and a friend are having a great time, just the two of you, until suddenly someone else joins in. This can happen if you’re 3 or 73, or anywhere in between! Once the third friend appears, things are just not quite the same.

Our two fuzzy bear friends encounter the same problem when a new friend bounces in and wants to play. They soon discover three’s a crowd! Feelings are hurt, tears are shed and voices are raised as alternating twosomes face off against the third. The imaginative bears create game after game, but each one is only for two friends. This continues until they finally realize MAYBE exciting games can be designed for three players instead of two, so three bears CAN actually be friends.

I loved the bears expressive faces. They add an extra element to the conversation you can have with your little ones as you share the story. Not only can you discuss friendship and the importance of including new playmates, but also how to understand their friend’s feelings by looking at their faces.

This delightful picture book is available now! I hope you’ll add it to your list of library holds, or maybe even to your next shopping list.

Negative and boring

Okay so this book was gifted to us from my MIL. It came in an Amazon book subscription box. This was a huge dud for my almost 4 year old. I really didn’t like how negative it was. I had already decided to donate this book after our first reading last night. Now today, when my toddler was angry, he has been shouting, “we are not friends!!” So that is fun (NOT).

I honestly do not know how it has so many positive reviews.

Disappointing

There is storyline to this book. I get the point, but I have enough small child conversations through the day I don't also need to read one in a book.
