Fr. Richard Rohr is a globally recognized ecumenical teacher bearing witness to the universal awakening within Christian mysticism and thexa0Perennial Tradition.xa0He is a Franciscan priest of the New Mexico Province and founder of thexa0Center for Action and Contemplation (CAC)xa0in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Fr. Richard's teaching is grounded in the Franciscan alternative orthodoxy—practices of contemplation and lived kenosis (self-emptying), expressing itself inxa0radical compassion, particularly for the socially marginalized.xa0Fr. Richard is the author of numerous books, including Everything Belongs, Adam’s Return,xa0The Naked Now,xa0Breathing Under Water , Falling Upward , Immortal Diamond, and Eager to Love: The Alternative Way of Francis of Assisi. Fr. Richard is academic Dean of thexa0Living School for Action and Contemplation. Features & Highlights

  • “Order, by itself, normally wants to eliminate any disorder and diversity creating a narrow and cognitive rigidity in both people and systems. Disorder, by itself, closes us off from any primal union, meaning, and eventually even sanity in people and systems. Reorder, or transformation of people and systems, happens when both are seen to work together” – from the preface.
  • Through time, a universal pattern can be found in all societies, spiritualities, and philosophies. We see it in the changing seasons, the stories of Scripture in the Bible, the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the rise and fall of civilizations, and even personally in our lives. In this updated version of one of his earliest books, Father Richard Rohr clearly illuminates how understanding and embracing this pattern can give us hope in difficult times and the courage to push through disorganization and even great chaos to find a new way of being in the world.
  • “We are indeed 'saved' by knowing and surrendering to this universal pattern of reality. Knowing the full pattern allows us to let go of our first order, trust the disorder, and, sometimes even hardest of all—to trust the new reorder. Three big leaps of faith for all of us, and each of a different character.” —from the introduction.

Powerful, Straightforward

I have been a fan of Richard’s writing for many years. I must say though, this is probably his best book. It is timely it is urgent it is uncompromisingly straightforward. Every time I read Richard my faith deepens. I originally ordered this as an audible title But I am now going to order the book as well. I cannot recommend him enough Especially if you are a person who questions central tenants of the various Christian religions. Richard, who is a Franciscan monk, nonetheless calls out what needs to be called out as it relates to our Christian faith. I just love his work and I’m so grateful to have found his work

Deep, and deeply relevant to today

Richard Rohr, in my opinion, is the prophet of our time. His universal vision of Christianity restores the original mystical spark on which it was founded. He combines deep spirituality with Jungian psychoanalysis to bring us help, comfort and inspiration in these difficult days. Although this book was written in 2001, he has revised it so that is completely relevant to what we are going through as a society today. For those whose Christianity might be feeling tired and formulaic, this book will give you a shot in the arm. I have read many of his books, but this one has a greater depth than many. I cannot recommend this book highly enough, and I encourage reading his other books too, in particular Falling Upward and Immortal Diamond. He restores Jesus's original place in Christianity, as the template for all of humanity.

Very poor print quality makes the 2020 edition nearly illegible

This edition has a font that is very small and is light gray in color. One member of our book group had to drop out because she simply could not read it; others among us are struggling with eye strain. If you want to be able to read this book without getting a splitting headache, I recommend Kindle. Amazon should stop selling the print edition.

Thought provoking and very challenging for anyone trying to move deeper in their faith

Richard Rohr shares wisdom that comes from a depth the mystics knew. His writings challenge all of us who are on a path to greater spiritual understanding to go deeper and his writing put the modernist/post modernist concepts of the world into a perspective that is seldom, if ever, addressed in churches today. It is impossible to seriously read this book and not be impacted by his perception and knowledge and his challenges to step back and reflect on what we've been taught and and how we've been led to believe a lifestyle that is anything but consistent with the life and impact of Jesus. Whether I like it or not, my life has been forever impacted by reading this book and reflecting on its challenges and wisdom

This book would have been great without the politics

Don’t get me wrong. This book is not without its wisdom. But the author seems to lack a general sense of politics. He set himself up for failure when he decided to dwell on politics without fully diving into it. I guess the word would be “half-assed”. There’s more to politics than the social aspect. For me, choosing to be one side or another has a lot to do with economics. Even then, the author totally gets the sides incorrect. Conservatives love freedom which means fewer laws, not more. Here’s a example that just doesn’t make sense: “…more and more laws and enforcements of those laws. Then there are endless prisons to hood those who do not comply, after we idealize “free choice” for them p178.

It was Thomas Jefferson that said he would rather have dangerous freedom over peaceful slavery.

Again, this book isn’t about politics (at least not the reason why I bought it) but these large erroneous statements made it hard to overlook it.

Richard Rohr's Best Book

Over the past twenty years, I have read all of Richard Rohr's books. When you read Richard Rohr, you have to bring quite a bit to the table in order to gain maximum benefit from what he is telling us. This book is especially suited for readers over the age of fifty (which I am) because you can bring to mind specific events in your own life that demonstrate exactly what Richard Rohr is saying. I plan to read this book many times because it is so dense with Wisdom. LB

Needed now more than ever

I have always loved reading Richard Rohr, but his latest edition of his earlier work is so applicable to our current times. I highly recommend it.
