Catholics in good standing BEWARE OF THIS AUTHOR!

I was deceived by Rohr. As a Roman Catholic I assumed a book written by a priest would be in line with my faith. I was wrong. In my opinion he is a heretic. I have since googled this man and find that some people respected by the faith believe he is infiltrating the church to destroy it from within. All I can say is good luck- many have tried- many have failed. To all 12 steppers - May God guide you and strengthen you on your journey- and may He always let you know that you do not walk alone. Peace and blessings.

Okay

Not one of Richard Rohr's best. I've read a number of his books, but this one seemed a bit forced. I took his Center for Action and Contemplation online course by the same name, which was based on the book. The course was a total waste and probably colors my opinion of the book.

Essential read for those in the program

This is an essential source for 12 steppers, and for those familiar with the program. My husband and son are in the program, my husband for many years, and this winter he is mentoring a group through Breathing Under Water. I am helping him understand Rohr's use of Bible verses at the beginning of each chapter. My husband sponsors many in the program, and since I first gave him this book about a year ago, he gives it to each of his sponsees, and frequently buys the book for others. My son has also read the book. I have never run across anyone who has not praised the book.

Breathing Under Water

First things first this was the first used book I ever bought from Amazon that had so many sentences underlined that it became a distraction.
After that it was okay but too much self help reading can make anyone need help. I did like the last two chapters on the 12 steps. Prayer and meditation. As a former member of AA those two work better than meetings ever had. But that's me. Sharing with others really helped when I first started some 25 yrs ago on my life sojourn of the spirit. It helps now. This book can help but I've found learning via visible examples of others was a must. The Lord has directed me thru various levels but the key was finally listening with the heart, as in divine love.
Richard Rohr hints on love of God being the true remedy. Of opening ones heart to God and stilling ones mind. He makes it very real. Yes the 12 steps can be used by all but without fellowship its just words.

I haven't finished it yet...as a matter of fact I've only just begun the chapter on Step 4...however, this book is AWESOME. The scripture passages he uses to illustrate his points are poignant. The book is warm and inviting...telling us that in one way or another we are all addicts and that the 12-steps can help most anyone. I'm excited to finish this book and move on to the others that I bought.

Not what I expected

I had understood it to be a correlation of the teachings of Jesus to AA's very clear and practical Twelve Step program, but it had a lot more to do with religion, meditation and orthodox Christianity. I found it to be excessively boring and esoteric andI was disappointed.

almost all of it great. This is the best one in my opinion

I have read a lot of Richard Rohr, almost all of it great. This is the best one in my opinion. Whether or not you have addictions of the alcohol or drugs variety, this is a really helpful way to see ourselves. It is true.
