Steady Suspense that Suddenly Stops

Having never read any of White’s books before, this one intrigued me. The mystery is well-paced and the steady momentum builds to a near-crescendo pitch. Emma lost her controlling first husband to murder. She’s re-built her life with new love, but now the authorities are re-opening the investigation into Derrick’s death, and renewed and unwanted interest focuses on Emma. She’s a successful businesswoman, but the scrutiny begins to unravel her confidence. White does an excellent job of depicting Emma’s anxiety and unease. The reader can feel her palpable worry, as a string of odd events add to her existing distress. Suddenly, she distrusts everyone in the large cast of characters that populate the story, and the reader is kept in the dark as to the perpetrator’s identity, amid a flurry of turning pages. Yet, despite all that’s satisfying about the book, the ending is abrupt and deflating. I even wondered if White had originally intended to write a different ending, and then just decided to veer off in another direction. A good read, but ultimately, the suspense wasn’t sustainable, a bit like a roller coaster ride that dwindles to a stop.

Fantastic suspenseful book

I loved this book. Written in the past and present tenses, it was easy to read and impossible to put down. The perfect life of Emma suddenly seems to have her questioning everything. Going to back to when her ex-husband was murdered, Emma is finally enjoying a wonderful life, but is it all true? At several points in the book I felt I had it figured out and at one point gasped with surprise. So many characters with so many secrets that all come together throughout the book leading to a fabulous and unexpected ending. I didn't want it to end. A perfect read for summer or anytime, I would not miss this one. It's one of her very best!!!

That’s it?!

This book had so many twists and turns and moments where you really didn’t know who was behind it all. And then…it just ends. There’s no closure! Soooo much happens and then nothing. What a disappointment.

Ending unclear and abrupt

I liked the premise and got a good feel for the heroine. Also quite suspenseful and in the middle kept me guessing. But the ending didn't really satisfy.

Nit picky, but it still bothers me

I wasn't really enjoying the simplistic writing or plot, but a friend recommended it. I decided to drop it when, at one point, Emma's second husband (he's from New Jersey) mentions he was at a convention in Florida, developed a toothache, and that evening called his dentist in New Jersey to prescribe a painkiller.

My first hesitation was when he called his dentist in the evening. You have to be on pretty close terms with your dentist to be able to reach him in the evenings. I would have continued reading on BUT I had to stop and look up whether or not a dentist in New Jersey could call in a prescription like that to a pharmacy in Florida. It seems that it can't be done.

That's when I decided I had better things to do that deal with sloppy writing and editing.

Intriguing, fabulous thriller!

I literally could not bear to put this book down! The fascinating characters—their interesting lives and professions, and their complex inter-relationships, their vulnerabilities —are captivating! I love how the author, Kate White, creates such a rich tapestry of intrigue, with so many interesting angles. The mystery was rich, multifaceted, twisty— a fabulous, satisfying ride. I devoured this book.

not bad; not great

Not a bad book, but I thought the story was too contrived. The author keeps throwing false leads at the reader, some that don't make sense.

LOTS of characters....and (oddly to me) the author seems to describe what each character was wearing each time they appear. I thought it would end up being a part of the plot or solution but it just seemed an unnecessary detail. I guess it would have made sense to carefully describe each character the FIRST time they appeared to give them context, but it got boring to me.

I felt the book just sort of ended with a thud. BUT I did finish it and I don't finish books I really dislike, so that is something!

A thriller with many twists and turns

Having read many mysteries/thrillers, I like to think I’ve gotten fairly good at being able to have some idea of who is a viable suspect or even correctly guessing the culprit before reaching the end. This went out the window with The Second Husband. Kate White had me guessing until the very last pages!

I enjoyed the intermittent flashbacks of the protagonist’s life following her first husband’s death. These chapters were insightful, while never getting confusing (which can happen when jumping between the past and present). Just when I thought I had pinpointed who the culprit was, I would change my mind and zero in on another character. This fun read will keep you guessing - even the protagonist herself became a suspect in my eyes at one point.

I appreciate that the author really fleshes out her protagonists in her novels. You really get a sense of how they are feeling and makes for a better read. I was a fan of the Bailey Weggins series of books, but I’m really enjoying these novels with other characters as well.

I don’t want to say too much more about the plot and risk spoiling the fun. Another great read from Kate White and I look forward to even more novels in the near future.

Clever plotting, ghastly writing.

It is hardly worth reviewing when it is clear from other reviews that Ms White’s mainly female readership absolutely love this stuff.

On the one hand you get a plot that seems cleverly schemed. This involves the murder of a first husband, possible major art forgeries in the family and a lying stalker of a second husband. But, sadly, not one of these plots gets near to being resolved.

Then there is the style which can be described as Mills and Boone for rich career ladies. There’s plenty of love . But much more description of the garments worn by every single woman and quite a few of the men. This often includes the brands of the clothing and what Patsy of Absolutely Fabulous would describe as Accessories. As a mere idiot of a man I hadn’t heard of some of the clothing items and certainly didn’t know or care about any of the brands. But Ms White edited Cosmopolitan for many years and added hundreds of thousands of readers so she must know her fan base.

So I , with a retiree closet entirely from charity shops, couldn’t stand it. If you know the brands of what you wear and this is important to you…read on.
