Intriguing Premise, Tedious Read

I was very excited about this book because I had read so many great reviews about this author and the book summary of Perfect Getaway sparked my interest. Unfortunately, I had trouble focusing on the book (and put it down often) when I first started reading. When I would pick it back up, I had to keep rereading to remind myself of which character was which, as the chapters are based on POV of individual characters. I generally like this style of writing.

It seemed like an overly long buildup to “the action” and it wasn’t until roughly 30-40% through the book that I became interested enough to keep reading without allowing distractions. There were definitely some unexpected twists toward the end, but I found them extremely contrived. I wasn’t sufficiently invested in any of the characters to care that much, but enough to cringe at certain “revelations” as I finished the book. It was a tedious process to get to the end.

Overall, this wasn’t a satisfying read for me. However, I will read another book by this author. I was prepared to love her style and purchased The Reunion at the same time as Perfect Getaway. Some other reviewers noted that this book wasn’t on par with some of the author’s other work, so I hope that’s the case.

"I had no idea of the nightmare that was about to unfold."

I would love to take a vacation to a tropical island where I could lie in the sun, relax and forget about life for a while. That is exactly what our couples expected to do upon their arrival at Isla Del Amor, but fate had a different plan for them.

I began reading “The Perfect Getaway” more than once because I was afraid to continue, nervous about what our happy travelers might encounter on the mysterious island. Could danger be waiting for them on the remote island where they are the only inhabitants, except for the staff? The dynamics of each couple made me wonder if they really wanted to all be there together. For being such close friends I detected animosity, secrets and jealousy between all of them.

As I turned the pages and became more involved with the story I felt like I was there on the island with them, constantly looking over my shoulder and feeling very nervous at what the future might hold. When a member of the group mysteriously dies, I thought I knew who the culprit was, but I was mistaken. As the finger pointing began between the survivors, it made me wonder who would be next. Kiersten Modglin is a genius at writing psychological thrillers. Her creative words make you think, make you scared and keep you guessing until the very last page.

Kiersten Modglin took me on a 2 day “getaway” and man it was spectacularly mind-blowing!!
I have come to expect twists and surprises from this author – but this one has topped them all. I was truly shocked in awe when I finished the novel.
Who does not want a week away on a private island with some of your closest friends ? Well it is all fun and games until the secrets come up and then when someone winds up dead…. well that takes this riveting thriller in a different direction and this is no longer the relaxing vacation that everyone expected. I was on the edge of my seat for the entire twisted ride !!!

a must read!

Wow, what a good book! A real page turner. Kiersten knows how to write a mystery thriller that grabs you right from the beginning and keep you reading. Loved this book as well as all her books that I have read. Want suspense, betrayal, hidden truths, lies, loyalty, unrequited love, murder, twists, jealousy, then read this book. Four couples go on an all expenses paid vacation to a tropical island, what could possibly go wrong? Who will survive and who will die? Will secrets from the past create such intense jealousy to drive a person to commit murder? What could that secret be to cause someone to become unhinged? Such a twist at the end, parts so sad but yet some parts happiness too!

Kiersten has done it again. This book is nothing like I've read before. Totally new. There were characters I didn't trust from the beginning. I may have been wrong. As I've told you before, I can never figure out "who done it". I certainly didn't figure out this book. I don't think you will either. I don't think there is another person on this earth who has a mind that works like Kiersten Modglin!

Her characters are believable and so is the story. So many scenarios went through my mind. Every one of them were wrong! WRONG! I think this may be her best book yet. If you love a good story that will keep you on the edge of your seat, turning pages and reading long into the night, pre-order The Perfect Getaway! Now! You don't want to miss this one for sure.

You Will Never See it Coming...

This was a RIDE. Lifelong friends end up getting an amazing offer- that almost sounds too good to be true… yet under pressure, everyone agreed to go. Who would have thought that being stranded on paradise could turn into purgatory? The character development in this book is done so carefully, and in such detail, that you literally find yourself building assumptions about who did it… only to have another little truth-bomb dropped, shattering all you thought you knew. I was getting definite Agatha Christie vibes, with this cast of characters. And I definitely appreciated the build-up, and the suspense with each turn of the page. I really liked the underlying themes Kiersten played with in this book… nothing is what is seemed, everything and everybody was like an iceberg- what you could see was just a sliver of what was hiding beneath the surface. Calm waters turn deadly, and secrets from the past start crawling out of their hiding places. The choices we make, are not always right. Sometime we choose what is easy, as opposed to what is right. Friendship is a beautiful, powerful, life changing thing. Keep your friends close... but your enemies closer... Easier said than done, when you don't know friend, from foe. The final chapters will literally blow your mind. So many twists, turns, and deadly waves will come crashing down… and you will be left not knowing who you can trust. Friends forever, right? I gave this book 5 out of 5 stars.
