Description

From School Library Journal Gr 6–9—Zoe and Logan are trying to figure out who killed the goose that laid the golden eggs. With another cliff-hanger ending, readers will be eagerly awaiting the next title. From Booklist After safely returning the litter of griffins to their enclosure in The Menagerie (2013), Zoe and Logan are dismayed to find Pelly—the haughty, demanding, gold-egg-laying goose—missing and her nest covered in blood and feathers. A dragon stands accused and faces possible extermination, but the kids are sure he is innocent, so they launch an investigation. This second volume in the lighthearted series is just as full of madcap adventures, animated magical creatures, and crackerjack detective work from the cast of well-rounded, multicultural kids as the first title. Fans will be thrilled at the promise of deeper mysteries in subsequent volumes. Grades 3-7. --Sarah Hunter “Hilarious.” — Kirkus Reviews “Fantasy lovers will delight in this funny and action-packed murder mystery full of the mystical creatures from all of their other favorite fantasies.” — Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA) This second volume in the silly, lighthearted series is just as full of madcap adventures, animated magical creatures, and crackerjack detective work from the cast of well-rounded, multicultural kids as the first. Animal lovers will eagerly anticipate more Logan and Zoe adventures.” — ALA Booklist Zoe Kahn is no stranger to the risks that come with caring for mythical creatures. But even feeding deadly basilisks and tracking down missing griffins didn't prepare her for the crisis that is unfolding at her family's Menagerie. The goose who laid the golden eggs has been murdered—and all the evidence points to a dragon named Scratch. Now that he's part of the secret Menagerie, Logan Wilde is determined to help. He and Zoe are sure that the dragon is being framed, but unless they can prove he is innocent, Scratch will be executed. Worse yet, the Menagerie will be forced to shut down—which Logan and Zoe are starting to fear is exactly what someone wants. . . . Tui T. Sutherland & Kari Sutherland are sisters and best friends, and if you can’t tell by looking at them which one is older, Tui certainly isn’t going to tell you. They grew up in South America, traveling a lot and moving several times (and they’re still only about 80 percent certain that their parents weren’t secret agents). Kari now lives in California, while Tui lives in Boston, but they use every excuse they can to see each other (like, say, writing a book together). Tui T. Tui fans will not be disapointed!!!

I am a huge fan of Tui T. Sutherland's books, and this one is no exception! This book has a much more action-packed plot than the first book in the series, and also goes into more detail about the Menagerie animals themselves. This is a book about magical creatures, so I'm very pleased that Tui (and co-creator Kari) incorporated them into the story. I also love how Tui and Kari not only included classic creatures (unicorns, griffins, mermaids, etc.) but also introduced lots of lesser-known beasts (krakens, kelpies, basilisks, etc.) It kept things from getting cliche and boring, and I loved learning about these new animals (who are all very cool and really should be written about more.) Thank you Kari and Tui for such an amazing read, and I hope I have convinced you, reader, to become a Tui fan :)
