Engaging series for 9 year olds and up

My son got the first series of this book from school and really liked it, read through it way too fast. His Aunt got him the next several books in the series and he's been flying through those. He enjoys the books and is exciting for the next. My sister-in-law, an avid book reader, started reading them with him and noted there is a lot of teenage angst, laziness, and whiny-ness that is portrayed by the dragons and she didn't care for that so much. It's tricky because the more my son sees, reads, experiences these kinds of attitudes, responses etc the easier it is for him to learn that as how he handles situations. So I have to be careful with what he reads, sees, etc. to counter some of it with what is the right way to handle situations. Overall, I'd still recommend this series.

Made my son cry

I kind of can't believe these books are marketed to kids. In book one they're made into gladiators in a fight to the death arena. In this book (spoiler warning) we learn that one actually killed her own father. Then when they got imprisoned again, by an apparently loving mother my son literally broke down sobbing and hurled three book across the room.

Seriously bloody violent books. A bit rough on me even, and I spent most of my teens reading Stephen king and vc Andrews. Actually... It pretty much is a sex free vc Andrews with dragons. Really not a kids book. Ymmv.

Disgustingly inappropriate for children.

We will be getting rid of all the books in the series. I'm very disappointed in the author for adding the nasty content that she did. My children and I were really liking the series until it was ruined for us. Adults views and beliefs do not belong in a children's book. Write books for adults if you're going to add adult conent. Children have enough to deal with and books should be a great escape. They do not need books with content much too great for them to understand and process. Absolutely ridiculous. The only reason I gave it one star was because I had to to submit my review other wise I would not have given it even 1 star.

Violent, repetitive storyline

The author is repetitive - either her editor isn’t very good or she doesn’t listen to her editor. The violence is also disturbing for a youth book.

Not for young children

I thought these were children’s books but they are way too advanced for a 6 yr old

Much Better Than the First

To be honest, I only purchased this book because, I let someone burrow my books. I didn't have high expectations for this novel. Not only do I hate the first novel, I normally don't like sequels. I just don't find them as good as the first one. However, I enjoyed reading this one.
I like how Tsunami was rattled after she killed Gill. Not only was he her father, but it was a fight to the death. Also, if a character can kill without regret, then they're probably a sociopath. I liked the part where Queen Coral revealed who Tsunami's father was. Not only did I enjoy up to that part, I feel that Tui Sutherland chose a good point in the novel. I really like how the mysterious assassin was a statue. Not did I suspect different characters, but it makes sense. Since animus magic runs in the royal family, it makes sense that Orca could enchant her statue. Speaking of animus dragons, I do like the idea of them. That could explain palaces since the only worthwhile Scavenger (so far) killed Queen Oasis and started the war.
I can understand how the gang can get annoyed by Starfall. He doesn't annoy me, but he does have obnoxious qualities.
There are only two issues that I have with the writing. The first issue is for a novel that's serious, it could written a bit more seriously. I think Tui Sutherland shouldn't have used the words um, uh, or er at all. I might have found the fight scene against the dragon statue interesting if Tsunami didn't use a spear. In a SeaWing's case, that wouldn't make any sense. Not only do they lack thumbs, but they also lack prehensile tails.

Fun Series! Can't Put These Down!

One of our younger readers LOVES this series. This is the second part of the story and the dragonets take to the sea to continue their adventure. If your kiddos enjoy the Warriors series or any sort of fantasy reading, they will love Sutherland's Wings of Fire series. These are probably better suited for the later elementary years as the dragons do commit murder and the humans in the story are mere pillagers that are seen as simple snacks by some dragons. Nothing is too graphic or too violent, but those more sinister elements are involved in the story and could be too scary for a first or second grader.

We love this series and can not wait to read book ...

We love this series and can not wait to read book two. Great chapter books that are well written. O enjoy them as a parent reading to my 8yr old (who loves dragons). There are battles/ gore/ a touch darker images. At first I was concerned but these are not the main focus of the book a d my daughter loves dragons and said she was fine with it. I'm glad, the writing and story line are truly enjoyable.
