Description

“The power of Mina’s writing is such that she can transport readers from placidity to violent pandemonium in the space of a paragraph.” ( The Washington Post )“She’s up there with Ian Rankin among practitioners of character-driven Scottish noir.” ( The Philadelphia Inquirer )“Riveting. . . . An installment that exposes the bleakness of small-town Scotland as skillfully as it does the bustling mean streets of Glasgow.” ( Publishers Weekly (starred review))“A wee fine read.” ( Winnipeg Free Press )“A page turner that is guaranteed to satisfy mystery lovers.” ( The Vancouver Sun )“There’s a wonderful Glasgow-ness to Mina’s writing. Using various points of view, she captures a city full of hopelessness and hope, a place of deep class divides and gang crime, of loyalty and pride in belonging.” ( NOW Magazine )“Deliciously shadowy.” (Metro London)“Atmospheric and compelling.” (Woman & Home (UK))“Takes you right under the characters’ skin. A relentlessly tense and exciting read, every page oozes menace and its core of truth makes it all the more unsettling.” (Sunday Mirror)“A terrific exploration of crime and oppression.” (Kirkus Reviews (starred review) )“Mina applies her imagination to the known facts and creates a vivid, haunting narrative.” (The Times (London))“Indelible.” (The Guardian)“A thrilling read. . . . Much though I love Mina’s Alex Morrow and Paddy Meehan books, it is in this book-where she is least making things up-that she shows her true creative powers.” (The Scotsman)“An extraordinary achievement, so weird and vivid and compelling, like The Lost Weekend crossed with one of the darker Elmore Leonards. Very black and existentialist. The writing is fantastic, sharp and intelligent and it rang absolutely true.” (Christobel Kent, author of The Crooked House and My Husband's Wife)“The emerging story is an intricate and suspenseful unveiling of a murderer’s mind while taking readers on a compelling journey through Glasgow’s historic underworld. . . . This stand-alone thriller showcases Mina at her best.” (Booklist (starred review) )“A fascinating retelling by Denise Mina, Scotland’s most literate and imaginative crime novelist. . . . Ghastly and irresistable.”xa0 (Toronto Star)“ The Long Drop is a foray into the world of true crime, as fictionalized by a writer of real talent.” (Globe and Mail (Toronto)) --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. A stand-alone true crime thriller from the acclaimed author of the Alex Morrow novels that exposes the dark hearts of the guilty . . . and the innocent. True story: 1958, Glasgow. Peter Manuel broke into a suburban villa in Glasgow and murdered three members of the Watt family. William Watt, the father, a successful businessman and entrepreneur, was arrested and jailed for the crime, but the police couldn’t find enough evidence to charge him and he was released. Watt was determined to clear his own name and let it be known that he would pay for information. Peter Manuel contacted him and offered to help. The two men met in a bar and spent the next twelve hours drinking together. No one knows what happened that night. When Manuel was finally arrested weeks later on another murder charge, he represented himself in what the newspapers called the trial of the century. The Long Drop is Denise Mina’s reimagining of the mysterious night Peter Manuel and William Watt spent together, intercut with the transcripted trial. Through a careful reconstruction of events, Mina’s riveting prose attempts to make sense of one of the most baffling and intriguing true crime cases in legal history. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. I'm a big Denise Mina fan but this one simply didn't take.

You know, I'm a big Denise Mina fan but this one simply didn't take. I read about 100 pp and wondered what it was all about or going to be about. That's a fair amount of time and investment for a novel (and esp one by Mina, otherwise so reliably good in other outings), so I must say I let it go.

Impressive writing skills, but disappointing content.

The Long Drop is the historic, but semi-fictional account of the life and death of Peter Manuel, a serial rapist and killer in Scotland in the 1950s.
The story is very grim. All of the main characters are despicable, and their reprehensible acts are described in detail. There didn't seem to be a purpose in this negativity, and I found myself feeling vaguely disgusted much of the time.
I had difficulty following the plot and was confused a lot of the time about what was happening. I had to stop and put it down to read other books in between several times, partly because it was so difficult to follow, and partly because of the depressing atmosphere. Because the author has exceptional writing skills, I believed if I kept reading, all would become clear. Unfortunately, at the end, I was still unsure of what this was about.
I was impressed by Mina's ability to describe people and places, and I found myself admiring these skills many times. It was easy to picture the gritty underbelly of Scotland in the 1950s and the unsavory characters that inhabited it. I plan to read another book by Denise Mina before forming a lasting impression. I think the execution (no pun intended) of this one just didn't work for me.

Note:I received an eARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Disappointed

I couldn't wait for Denise Mina's latest book to come out I have enjoyed all of her other books immensely. Started reading The Long Drop and thought...what the heck.... This novel is NOTHING like her other books, it waffled on and on and on, I started flicking pages and then decided not to waste my time hoping to be submerged in the story. This is a lesson for me, just because I like an author's other books don't assume they will all be as good, READ what they are about before buying. So disappointed.

I have eagerly awaited each of Ms Mina's books and have never been disappointed until this one

Completely unlike her other novels, all with complex and difficult characters who were likable or relatable. I have eagerly awaited each of Ms Mina's books and have never been disappointed until this one.

Great writing but anticlimactic

The writing, itself, is very good. The story isn’t bad, but we are told how it’s going to end near the beginning of the book. So there is no twist and, without one, the story falls flat. Perhaps it’s the setting, but I could not connect with any of the characters. And one of the most difficult things about this book is that there are so many characters that I had to keep backing up to remind myself who they were and how they fit in to the main storyline. I also found the dialogue challenging (the setting is Glasgow, Scotland) and it frustrated me. I checked this out from the library and I would recommend you doing the same. This would’ve been a tremendous disappointment had I purchased the book. That being said, I might read another book from this author, because I do like her writing.

Not worth the read.

The premise of this book is what drew me in. However, the entire storyline is uneventful and the story drags on. It's predictable even though the writing seems scattered. I kept waiting for something to happen; a twist, anything. But this story is written like a boring story your friend shares with you. "Hey, have you heard of Peter Manuel? No? Well let me tell you about him." Then when your friend is done you're left saying, "That's it? You just spent 4 hours telling me about a serial killer and a boring court room drama that lacks imagination. Thanks, buddy!"

The Long Drop is based upon an actual Scottish serial killer.

I love Denise Mina's writing. This book was very different. I somehow missed the fact that it was based upon an actual Scottish serial killer..... until the very end. Duh to me!!!
Its non linear style (recent past/ present/ past) was hard to follow for quite a number of chapters.

I'm normally a huge Denise Mina fan. I've read all of her other books and loved them. I particularly enjoy the characters that populate her novels. This book, though, was very good, not great. However, it's still better than a whole lot of other novels that are out there.

A book about a serial killer doesn't have to be so we!l written to be excellent, but it helps

This book reads like a lyrical thriller, but it's a scary-true. The last chapters will leave you saying, "Wow!" to yourself in the dark.
