Description

From the Back Cover Old Joseph Joe sees it all. Two strangers spill blood at the Shiprock Wash-O-Mat. One dies. The other drives off into the dry lands of the Big Reservation, but not before he shows the old Navajo a photo of the man he seeks. This is all Tribal Policeman Jim Chee needs to set him on an odyssey that moves from a trapped ghost in an Indian hogan to the seedy underbelly of L.A., and to an ancient healing ceremony where death is the cure, then off into the dark heart of murder and revenge. About the Author TONY HILLERMAN served as president of the Mystery Writers of America and received the Edgar and Grand Master Awards. His other honors include the Center for the American Indian’s Ambassador Award, the Spur Award for Best Western Novel, and the Navajo Tribal Council Special Friend of the Dineh Award. A native of Oklahoma, Tony Hillerman lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico, until his death in 2008.

Navaho Ghosts

I promised myself after I retired that I would go back and reread all of the Joe Leaphorn/Jim Chee novels in the order that they were written. This book features Deputy Jim Chee. The story line covers the Navaho beliefs in death and ghosts in more detail than the prior books. The death ritual not being properly followed leads Chee to suspect that there is more to the case than it first appears. It also takes him to Los Angeles and back before solving the case.

Ghostway Enthralls

All of Hillerman’s Chee/Leaphorn stories are fascinating. Ghostway is particularly gripping! I totally recommend it as an entertaining fairly quick read.

Fascinating With Few Off Tones

I love the Hillerman series although I realized I’m not reading them in order. I’m about 3/4 through. What I found interesting is Cher’s struggle to maintain his Navajo Culture, his spirituality and his Navajo identity without being swallowed up by the larger society. The Navajo rituals and countryside were part of the story. Which was a little off were scenes where Chee seemed to be bumbling and incompetent and being saved twice by a teenage girl was a stretch. The letter from his girlfriend was wise and insightful.
