Description

Review “The only mysteries I read are Hillerman’s.” — Ursula K. Le Guin “A good exciting mystery that has everything.” — Pittsburgh Press “Hillerman’s mysteries are special . . . Listening Woman is among the best.” — Washington Post From the Back Cover The blind shaman called Listening Woman speaks of witches and restless spirits, of supernatural evil unleashed. But Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn of the Navajo Tribal Police is sure the monster who savagely slaughtered an old man and a teenage girl was human. Now the solution to a horrific crime is buried somewhere in a dead man’s secrets—and in the shocking events of a hundred years past. To ignore the warnings of a venerable seer, however, might be reckless foolishness when Leaphorn’s investigation leads him further away from the comprehensible . . . and closer to the most brutally violent confrontation of his career. About the Author TONY HILLERMAN served as president of the Mystery Writers of America and received the Edgar and Grand Master Awards. His other honors include the Center for the American Indian’s Ambassador Award, the Spur Award for Best Western Novel, and the Navajo Tribal Council Special Friend of the Dineh Award. A native of Oklahoma, Tony Hillerman lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico, until his death in 2008. Read more

The Saga Continues

I promised myself after I retired that I would go back and reread all of the Joe Leaphorn novels in the order that they were written. This is the third and it addresses additional background material on the Navaho religion and what can happen to those who leave the reservation and lose that faith. It also includes a brief overview of the American Indian Movement.

Reminder.

I am a huge fan of the Hillermans, first Tony and now his daughter, Anne and have read all their books.

I hate to have to point out the obvious here but this book was written long before “Dark Winds” came about and am amused with the reviews of the book that essentially say “not exactly like the mini-series.”

I can’t wait to go back and reread the book.

A Navaho Novel

Hillerman is always entertaining, but he is at his best when writing about Chee. The reader becomes immersed in the Navaho way of seeing the world. His works inspired me to visit the Big Rez.
