*sigh*

I like this series. I want more. I have trouble, however with the graphic novels in that they consist (for me ... this is all from my opinion, and is not a judgement of what others like) of more fluff than substance. There are a lot of frames without words and the ones that have words have depressingly few for stories whose main appeal for me is their humor, their cultural references, their forays into architecture, jazz, history, and worldbuilding sidebars into England's magical past and all that encompasses. This and for all the fact that you can see a characters expression as rendered by the artist, I would rather hear Peter's description of said expression. But maybe that is just me.

This was better than the graphic novels and reminds me of the short stories Mr. Aaronovitch has sometimes included at the end of the novels and has posted on Goodreads. I'm all for these, but unfortunately when I bought it I failed to look at how many pages it had and surmised from the price ($36.00 US) that it was the next novel. When it arrived from Amazon and was only 130 pages I went through several stages - shock, anger, grief ... not necessarily in that order - until I noticed it was a limited edition signed copy and then felt really stupid ... anyway, my point is, while I liked the story, especially its development of Abigail, I may have liked it less due to the above mentioned baggage I carried into it.

All this leads to an heartfelt appeal to the author if you should happen to read this: Don't give up on the novel form! As I said, the short stories and novellas are fine and a nice afternoon pleasure, but there is nothing like diving into several hundred pages of your favorite characters running around doing what they do in new wonderful ways. So many authors seem to stall lately (George R. R. Martin and Patrick Rothfuss ... yeah, I'm talking about you!), you need to step up and keep writing books with volume and dept that I can crawl into and rummage about in! ... I'm still buying hard backs, I'm still out here! There have to be more like me ....

Great mid series addition!!

Very nice little treat of a story- just don't be disappointed by the length. Despite having the cover design of one of the novels this book is more similar in size to a graphic novel. Liked the story quite a bit and got to see more of the precocious Abigail!

Nice print treat for those of us who still prefer ...

Nice print treat for those of us who still prefer writing to pictures - graphic novels are OK, but the text in a well piece simply overshadows all but the most awesome artwork in a GN. I was surprised to find the volume signed and numbered.

Too short, too simple.

I have been LOVING this series! I finished the last book in February, and pre-ordered this as soon as I saw it. Unfortunately, I never noticed that it was just a novella until I got the actual book... After all the preceding books, which all are rich, multi-faceted, multi-story-line wonders, this was disappointing. I love Abigail, and was glad to see more of her, but many of the multiple story lines have stopped in their tracks for this little pamphlet.

Always worth a read if you haven't picked up this series start now. Best new urban fantasy.

Feels like it takes place between novels.

More of a novella than a novel. I enjoyed the story but wish I had checked the page count before I purchased the book. The book does not introduce anything new to the Rivers of London series but shows what happens between major disasters and helps expand on minor charactors. A good read but makes me want the next novel even more.

Good. Typical Aronovitch

Good. Typical Aronovitch. Interesting plot/story line. Introduces a new character, his female cousin, but does not develop the character to any degree. Feeds the Aronovitch fan mill, but probably not sufficiently developed to capture the interest of a new reader.

Enjoyable and Light-hearted

This is an enjoyable 144 page novella, part of the PC Peter Grant series set in the world of "Rivers of London".
There are ghost-sightings in the subway, more than normal, and Peter as a member of the Folly has to handle it.
This starts a light-hearted romp in which we meet some of the cast from the novels, like Jaget from the BTP, learn that even rivergoods have a childhood and especially see, how Abigail, his cousin, develops to an asset of the Folly.
There could be more of Beverly, and there is nothing to advance the main plot line with the Faceless Man and Lesley, but in my opinion it is ok, that the author reservs those for the novels.
Nevertheless I do not think, that any fan of the series will miss on the opportunity to get a view at the things that happen outside the main plot line.
I really liked the book and would recommend it to everyone, but I think, you should know the characters already from the novels to get the most of it.
