Description

From School Library Journal YA-- Like Dan Davis in Heinlein's Door into Summer (Ballantine, 1986), Lunzie Mespil is a victim of cryogenic sleep and future shock. On three separate occasions following a deep-space disaster, she is placed in suspended animation totaling almost 90 years while awaiting rescue. Like Ripley in the film Aliens , she has lost not just her friends and loved ones, but everything familiar to her. Her story is a study of struggle against adversity as she tries to put her life back together. Because her medical knowledge is obsolete, Lunzie returns to school and becomes the medical officer on an exploratory vessel for the Federation of Sentient Planets. While routinely surveying the prehistoric life of the planet Ireta, she is caught in the middle of a violent racial mutiny. While not as strong a book as The Ship Who Sang (Ballantine, 1976) or most of the "Pern" novels, McCaffrey has created a feisty, likable character in Lunzie Mespil. This well-written yarn can stand alone, but it works best if read with Dinosaur Planet (1978), Dinosaur Planet Survivors (1984, both Ballantine), and Sassinak (Baen, 1990). --John Lawson, Fairfax County Public Library, VACopyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Where's the sequel?

This book suffers from the ills of collaborative efforts. Although I don't know any of the details of the arrangement between McCaffrey and Nye, I'd guess that Nye wrote the book based on McCaffrey's concept.
Half way through the book I began to wonder if this was going to be another of those multi-volume stories where seeds planted in the first book bear fruit but are never answered six or ten books later.
If intended to be a one volume book, as another review has pointed out, this one has no ending. Nothing gets resolved; very little is learned; the main character has not changed in any remarkable way; and the story is not over.

One of her worst books!

I love Anne McCaffrey, but in my opinion this is one of the few books that she has written that is not very good. I did not like the book and had a hard time finishing it. The second book in this Series, Sassinak and third Generation Warriors are both very good and I would recommend them, skip this one unless you have nothing better to do.

It just ended....poof

I liked most of the book until she stopped looking for her daughter with no explanation why. She starts relationships and Anne McCaffrey seems to use disaters and a return to cold sleep to end the relationships.

There is 'someone' after Lunzie for about 3/4 of the book. Near the end she and her co-workers have outsmarted them and will await rescue. Bamm, the book ends, no idea who was after Lunzie, if they are rescued. Very disappointed even as much as I love McCaffrey.

Where's the conclusion???

I was enjoying this book thoroughly until it came to its abrupt end. There was no sense of completion, no tying up of loose ends, nothing. The book simply ended in the middle of a new conflict. This ruined the entire experience... I would NOT recommend this book unless you enjoy being left hanging.

McCaffrey fan says: Bleh! (no plot spoilers)

I'll try to be brief.

Up until now I would say that every book with Anne McCaffrey's name on it was at least decent. (The ones with JUST Anne's on them = very good to excellent by the way.) Not this one.

I think some years ago I may have read one of the other books in this series / universe... If it was, and as I recall, it was ok. Not this one.

This one, as a stand alone, is really bad. The main character, the supporting characters, and the villains all seem to have had lobotomies. What plot there is runs entirely on the "and then something random happened" concept.

About the only use for reading this book: People who find opening a box of cereal mentally challenging might like feeling superior to the characters.

Rating: In that I don't want anyone to think this is an example of Anne McCaffrey = kindling.

BTW, (re the other review that said the cover was the best part) my edition does not have the "sexy spacesuit" cover... It has the "dentist-chair backpack" cover... So it lacks even that :p

Death of Sleep

I have been an Anne McCaffrey (and Todd McCaffrey) fan for many years. It is interesting to come into closer contact with them with this book.
