Description

Jody Lynn Nye lists her main career activity as 'spoiling cats.' When not engaged upon this worthy occupation, she writes fantasy and science fiction books and short stories. Before breaking away from gainful employment to write full time, Jody worked as a file clerk, book-keeper at a small publishing house, freelance journalist and photographer, accounting assistant and costume maker. For four years, she was on the technical operations staff of a local Chicago television station, ending as Technical Operations Manager. Since 1987 she has published 45 books and more than 110 short stories. Although she is best known as a collaborator with other notable authors such as Anne McCaffrey (the Ship Who series, the Dinosaur Planet series), Robert Asprin (Dragons and the Myth-Adventures), John Ringo (Clan of the Claw) and Piers Anthony, Jody has numerous solo books to her credit, mostly fantasy and science fiction with a humorous bent. Her newest book is Fortunes of the Imperium (Baen Books), the second of the Lord Thomas Kinago books, which she describes as "Jeeves and Wooster in space." Over the last twenty-five years or so, Jody has taught in numerous writing workshops and speaks at schools and libraries, and teaches the two-day writers' workshop at DragonCon in Atlanta. When not writing, she enjoys baking, calligraphy, travel, photography and, of course, reading. Jody lives in the northwest suburbs of Chicago with her husband, Bill Fawcett, and Jeremy, their cat. jodylynnnye.com

Features & Highlights

  • The Wolfe Pack is military SF with a twist! The auxiliary scout platoon known as the Cockroaches contains all the outsiders and oddballs the Galactic Defense Force doesn’t want to have to deal with, but can’t find a way to discharge from the Space Service. They’re savvy, street-smart, wise (if not book-learned), intelligent, survival-oriented, and completely unconventional. Lt. David Wolfe is their new CO: young, idealistic, and gung-ho, but even he has a secret that forced Central Command to shift him out of the line of fire. The Cockroaches get sent on what ought to be a simple courier mission to the greatest amusement park in the Galaxy, and end up defending the population from a ruthless enemy in the only way the Cockroaches know how: unconventionally!

Both good military action and wry humor

Both good military action and wry humor. In the tradition of Bob Asprin's Phule's Company a team of misfits is wielded into an elite fighting force and then tested in combat. The final battle amid a giant amusement park manages to be both exciting and laugh out loud funny.

It's all in the characters

I'm not much into military SF, but Jody Lynn Nye's humor and characters keep me reading. I'm happy that this is the start of a new series and looking forward to future Wolfe Pack books.

A good read for sci-fi and military-based fiction fans

Really enjoyed this science fiction/military book--and that is what you're getting. Nye employs a lot of elements from military life, exaggerated at times I expect, sometimes not I imagine, set several thousand years in humanity's future where a young officer, Daivid Wolfe, takes command of a bunch of reputed misfits, the X-Ray Division nicknamed "Cockroaches" and has to fight to win their approval, earn their respect and loyalty while he's fighting his superiors' disdain for the unit and--later--a ruthless enemy. Nye transmits the action with a healthy dose of humor mixed in that makes the book a good read for sci fi and military-based fiction fans alike.
