Description

"Greenwood weaves historical data into the plot like gold thread, giving it richness without weighing it down." ( Booklist )"Appealing characters and witty banter...an enjoyable caper." ( Publishers Weekly )"An unforgettable character, with a heart as big as her pocketbook, a fine disregard for convention and an insatiable appetite for life." ( Denver Post ) Kerry Greenwood was born in the Melbourne suburb of Footscray and after wandering far and wide, she returned to live there. She has degrees in English and Law from Melbourne University and was admitted to the legal profession on the 1st April 1982, a day which she finds both soothing and significant. Kerry has written three series, a number of plays, including The Troubadours with Stephen D’Arcy, is an award-winning children’s writer and has edited and contributed to several anthologies. The Phryne Fisher series (pronounced Fry-knee, to rhyme with briny) began in 1989 with Cocaine Blues which was a great success. Kerry has written twenty books in this series with no sign yet of Miss Fisher hanging up her pearl-handled pistol. Kerry says that as long as people want to read them, she can keep writing them. In 2003 Kerry won the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Australian Association.

Phryne and her lover take seperate journies to Castlemaine to solve two 1850's murders

** spoiler alert **A enjoyable addition to the Phryne Fisher saga.
Phryne's sister Eliza (Beth) has been banished to Australia and Phryne's wondering what happened to the sister she loved. Not only that, but, she's really hard to live with right now. One afternoon, Phryne decides to take her family and her Chinese lover, Lin Chung to the local amusement park for the afternoon. On the Ghost Train (US equivalent would be a haunted house), Phryne pulls the foot of one of the dummies, less than impressed by its looks. Only to find that the dummy in question is a real mummy. Her curiosity aroused and information found that he was mummified in the Egyptian style in Castlemaine in 1857. Additionally, she receives threats against herself and family to drop her inquiry, but, they obviously don't know Phryne. So, she's off to Castlemaine to find out who the mummy had been in life.
Meanwhile, Lin Chung, now the head of his family, wants to settle a family feud with the family Hu. Phryne suggests an accidentally on purpose meeting with the head of the Hu family. They manage to settle all open disputes except for the theft of gold and the murder of the couriers from the minefields in 1850's Castlemaine. So, after talking to family elders in Melbourne, he heads to Castlemaine and environs to see if he can find out what happened all those years ago.
