Description

Compared with some of the other entries in Greenwood's popular series, the mood is more serious and the identity of the murderer more mysterious, but fans will have no cause for complaint. ( Publishers Weekly )Australian social pillar Phryne Fisher's penchant for offbeat lovers involves her in a case that requires the close study of Judaism....Anyone would enjoy dancing with handsome young Simon Abrahams. The clever heroine manages to carry on an affair with Simon, placate his doting mother, improve her knowledge of all things Jewish and ultimately solve a tricky and dangerous case....Another smashing tale of mystery and manners between the world wars. ( Kirkus Reviews ) Kerry Greenwood was born in the Melbourne suburb of Footscray and after wandering far and wide, she returned to live there. She has degrees in English and Law from Melbourne University and was admitted to the legal profession on the 1st April 1982, a day which she finds both soothing and significant. Kerry has written three series, a number of plays, including The Troubadours with Stephen D’Arcy, is an award-winning children’s writer and has edited and contributed to several anthologies. The Phryne Fisher series (pronounced Fry-knee, to rhyme with briny) began in 1989 with Cocaine Blues which was a great success. Kerry has written twenty books in this series with no sign yet of Miss Fisher hanging up her pearl-handled pistol. Kerry says that as long as people want to read them, she can keep writing them. In 2003 Kerry won the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Australian Association.

Features & Highlights

  • "One of the more complex and somber cases in the career of Greenwood's Australian Jazz Age amateur sleuth Phryne Fisher." ―
  • Publishers Weekly
  • Phryne Fisher's contentment at the Jewish Young People's Society Dance is cut short when her dancing partner's father asks her to investigate the strange death of a devout young student in Miss Sylvia Lee's East Market bookshop. Miss Lee has been arrested for the murder, but Phryne believes that she is a very unlikely killer.
  • The investigation leads her into the exotic world of refugees, rabbis, kosher dinners, Kadimah, strange alchemical symbols, Yiddish, and chicken soup. Picking her way through the mystery, Phryne soon finds herself at the heart of a situation far graver and more political than she expected. And all for the price of a song....

OY VEY!...

This is a bit of a departure from the usual fare found in a Phryne Fisher mystery but still fun and interesting. Our fearless flapper finds herself drawn into Melbourne's Jewish community through her alliance with the scion of a wealthy Jewish family. When a murder occurs in this community and the wrong person is accused, Phryne is all in, ready to right what went wrong.

Be prepared for historical references to the Zionist movement and a bit of Yiddish thrown in for good measure. As always, Phryne Fisher is her cosmopolitan, bon vivant self as she strives to find the culprit. Still, this book is not quite as lighthearted as some of the others in the series have been. It is, nonetheless, very enjoyable. Fans of Phryne Fisher will not be disappointed.

Miss Fisher gets involved- in various ways- with the Jewish community in 1928 Melbourne

I adore Phryne! And this book was excellent.

While Lin is out of town, Phryne finds a new lad... and he brings her into the Jewish community (to a point), with all of its complications... including a mysterious murder for which a bookstore owner is being blamed.

This one is balanced well- we get to spend some time with her various friends and household members, as well as exploring the various mysteries raised. In many ways, this is one of the tighter novels I've read so far in the series, and it's all the better for that!

Very recommended for period Australia, mysteries, and Miss Fisher's utter fabulousess!

Much preaching and some mild pornography

The author has done her research -- and wants you to know it: instead of absorbing the background information and allowing it to color her story, she dishes it out straight and full blast. As for the "pornography", it's primarily voyeuristic.
The following quotation is, of course, a "sample of one", but the sort of cozy readers for whom it is provided will know exactly if this book is for them: "She was naked: even her head was bare of the ostrich feather fillet...'Oh, my nymph,' he gasped. 'Nereid, I'm yours.' In fairness, it was certainly meant to be humorous, but, as Anna Russell says, "Now I ask you...".
I will not be reading any more Phryne Fisher books, and so I will never know if the author's frequent reference to menstruation is a permanent fixation, or just something she uses to decorate this book.

Too sexually explicitly. Wanted the mystery

Like the mystery. Hated the sexual explicitly scenes.
I'm a Christian. Should have said in reviews to expect this and then I would not have ordered. Threw in the trash.

Be careful of the books you choose; you might not get the covers you want

Very disappointed with the fulfillment of this order. I specifically requested the book with the cover illustration of the 1920's Phryne, not the photograph of Essie Davis as Phryne. I will wait to see what the other books of this series look like before deciding if a return and repurchase is worth it. Not the first time this has happened with Amazon Fulfillment, and Yes, it DOES make a difference.
