Description

Review “Most and best of all, it’s Grisham living up to his reputation as a great storyteller.”— Entertainment Weekly “A fast-paced, fun read with echoes of something deeper. The author’s command of pop fiction delivers crisp, sharp prose.”— The Boston Globe “[Grisham] is exceptionally good at what he does. . . . Indeed, right now in this country, nobody does it better.”— The Washington Post “Where Grisham leads, millions of readers follow.”—New York Daily News From the Artist John Grisham

Features & Highlights

  • In his final hours in the Oval Office, the outgoing President grants a controversial last-minute pardon to Joel Backman, a notorious Washington power broker who has spent the last six years hidden away in a federal prison. What no one knows is that the President issues the pardon only after receiving enormous pressure from the CIA. It seems Backman, in his power broker heyday, may have obtained secrets that compromise the world’s most sophisticated satellite surveillance system.Backman is quietly smuggled out of the country in a military cargo plane, given a new name, a new identity, and a new home in Italy. Eventually, after he has settled into his new life, the CIA will leak his whereabouts to the Israelis, the Russians, the Chinese, and the Saudis. Then the CIA will do what it does best: sit back and watch. The question is not whether Backman will survive—there is no chance of that. The question the CIA needs answered is, who will kill him?

This is an abridged CD

Five stars because I love the novel and UNABRIDGED audio CD I checked out from the public library long ago. Because I searched for John Grisham UNABRIDGED audio CD's, I assumed this was unabridged when I ordered it. Unfortunately, I also ordered a couple of John Grisham only to discover after they were received that they too were abridged. I'll not order ANY audio book CD's again from Amazon unless it's clear that the CD is UNABRIDGED.

Novel or Italian lesson?

The protagonist is forced by the CIA to live in Italy. Many pages are nothing but his Italian lessons. No reason is ever given for why Italy. No reason possible for why so much of the book was about Italian lessons. Nothing much happened in first three quarters of the book, which ended with various plot lines unresolved.

I've read and enjoyed other John Grisham. Surprised he turned out such a turkey.

Grisham audio books

Have purchased several of his audio books on tape. We travel in a motorhome and they are great for long trips.

A great one, again

I learned that a cheating lying, and power hungry character can be rooted for (I surely did) if the character is compelling. I also liked Sammy Tin and I suppose he did not cross paths with Marco so Marco would live and carry the story forward. The historical explanation of the Italian architecture, religion, language, and food was mostly tedious. But, over all it's a great read. I loved his conversation with the journalist and my favorite line is, "Maynard got you pardoned; Morgan didn't have a clue." But, how did all the parties with "grudges" leave the scene so quietly? Can anyone answer that for me?

Riveting page turner

“The Broker” is an absolutely riveting and fast paced thriller. Joel Backman, a powerful Washington broker is doing time in prison when he receives a last minute pardon from the outgoing President and he is supposedly a “free man.”

He is flown to Italy where he has to take on a new identity and learn the language. Things are not easy and straightforward and Joel Backman has to constantly watch his back.

Book is great, but audiobook is terrible

This review is for the audiobook on CD. The audiobook is abridged and poorly done. It leaves out too much of the descriptions of the areas in Italy which adds charm and interest to the book, as well as leaving out the first chapter of the book which describes the JAM software, so a lot of the rest of the audiobook doesn't make sense without it.
