Description

Amazon.com Looking for a romantic, hardboiled legal drama with a social conscience? Look no further. This audio version of John Grisham's blockbuster The Street Lawyer is narrated by Michael Beck ( The Golden Seal , Xanadu ), whose portrayal of the similarly named Michael Brock, with his squeaky-clean voice and crisp annunciation, is in perfect pitch with the corporate attorney's Ivy League image. Beck's believable, engaging performance is compelling, drawing the listener into Brock's charmed life and his decision to quit the firm after being held hostage by a disgruntled homeless man. Moved by a crisis of conscience, Brock seeks out the gravel-throated, streetwise legal aid counselor Mordecai Green. Green shows him the ropes, and Brock soon becomes part of the scenery he used to look down on from his plush 14th-floor office. Meanwhile, our hero is on the lam for stealing an important file that holds the secret to an illegal eviction--one that may lead to a murder charge. Faced with a failing marriage, a client on crack, and the threat of disbarment, Michael has plenty to think about as he and Mordecai negotiate a fair settlement for the victims of an inexcusable crime. (Running time: 360 minutes; 4 cassettes) "Compelling...if there's any justice, The Street Lawyer will be his biggest hit yet." —Entertainment Weekly "An entertaining read with an important theme."— Chicago Sun-Times "The plot surges forward, pulling us along as we turn those pages a mile a minute." – San Francisco Chronicle A Main Selection of the Literary Guild and the Doubleday Book Club From the Paperback edition.

Features & Highlights

  • Michael was in a hurry. He was scrambling up the ladder at Drake & Sweeney, a giant D.C. law firm with eight hundred lawyers. The money was good and getting better; a partnership was three years away. He was a rising star with no time to waste, no time to stop, no time to toss a few coins into the cups of panhandlers. No time for a conscience. But a violent encounter with a homeless man stopped him cold. Michael survived; his assailant did not. Who was this man? Michael did some digging, and learned that he was a mentally ill veteran who'd been in and out of shelters for many years. Then Michael dug a little deeper, and found a dirty secret, and the secret involved Drake & Sweeney. The fast track derailed; the ladder collapsed. Michael bolted the firm and took a top-secret file with him. He landed in the streets, an advocate for the homeless, a street lawyer. And a thief.

This book is laughable

My wife and I laughed out loud listening to this book. When we weren't laughing, we were cringing at the preachy Kumbaya liberal politics of the author, who is now rich enough to afford the liberal policies he supports. Apparently, Grisham is salving his guilty conscience by having his alter-ego help fictional homeless people. If Grisham feels so strongly about the homeless, why doesn't he become a "Street Author" and donate his millions to charity? Oh I forgot -- liberals are only compassionate with other people's (tax) money. Two stars for the unintended humor.

Embarrassingly preachy with lousy character development

This is a book of "one-ness." Single dimension characters, one tedious and labored theme, and a singularly misplaced responsiblity. Washington DC's homeless problem is blamed on 1) the Republicans (and specifically, Newt), 2) the rich (specifically, the educated rich), and the fact that "Washington, DC just doesn't work." Not once in his heavy-handed preaching did Grisham mention the word, "Barry." I didn't give this a "1" out of loyalty for his real books.

Left me asking "is that all"

Worst book He has written. Fast read. Maybe because it contains very little. No action and no suspense. If you are looking for something to do for a couple of hours, read this. Will take no longer.

The Street Lawyer

I purchased this for my husband he, is in a vehicle traveling and he doesn't like the radio, so I purchase audio books for him to listen to. John Grisham is his favorite author. He enjoyed this one.

Maybe Grisham shouldn't crank out a new book every year

I was very disappointed in this book. It had no substance, the characters were weak and it just didn't cut it for me. I usually like Grisham books, but this one was too plain.

Grisham misses his mark with this one.

John Gisham is one of my favorite writers until he takes off on a social agenda. As with the Chamber, he misses his mark with The Street Lawyer. To try to inspire via a work of fiction I am afraid Mr. Grisham hasn't the gift for that. If John Grisham hates Republicans then just campaign against them at election time not between the pages of a book that is a work of fiction. In doing it this way he has lost his punch. Personal note to Mr. Grisham, stick to what you know best and leave the social stuff to others.
If the homeless mean so much to you, donate all the proceeds from this book and others to them, and leave my tax dollars alone. It is all I can do to afford your books and it really upsets me that you are not smart enough to be a Republican.
Winston Churchill said something to the effect of, When you are twenty you should be a liberal, it shows you have a heart, but by the time you are fourty you should be a conservative because it shows you have a brain.
GROW UP JOHN...Just because people have money does not mean they hate the homeless or that they are trying to hurt the homeless. We all do what we can and those that want to do more or think more should be done should JUST DO IT!!!!!!!

A sure hit as a Movie!

I am a real Grisham fan. I am also an English teacher and always encourage my students to read. This would make a great read for high school juniors and seniors.
