Description

"The book is a fascinating and lively guide, which engages the reader on many levels . . . . You can turn to any page of the book and find an access point to explore a web of integrated knowledge." ― Journal of Analytical Psychology (UK) "Many have explored the nature of mental life, yet no interdisciplinary approach has existed to address its issues or even define what the mind is. This book offers a new way of assessing how the mind works." ― Midwest Book Review "Siegel’s book does an amazing job reflecting his vast knowledge of how our brains and our relationships interact to shape our lives." ― PsychCentral Noted neuropsychiatrist Daniel J. Siegel, MD, is clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of California–Los Angeles School of Medicine, and executive director of the Mindsight Institute in LA. He is founding editor of the Norton Series on Interpersonal Neurobiology.

Features & Highlights

  • The central concepts of the theory of interpersonal neurobiology.
  • Many fields have explored the nature of mental life from psychology to psychiatry, literature to linguistics. Yet no common “framework” where each of these important perspectives can be honored and integrated with one another has been created in which a person seeking their collective wisdom can find answers to some basic questions, such as, What is the purpose of life? Why are we here? How do we know things, how are we conscious of ourselves? What is the mind? What makes a mind healthy or unwell? And, perhaps most importantly: What is the connection among the mind, the brain, and our relationships with one another?
  • Our mental lives are profoundly relational. The interactions we have with one another shape our mental world. Yet as any neuroscientist will tell you, the mind is shaped by the firing patterns in the brain. And so how can we reconcile this tension―that the mind is both embodied and relational? Interpersonal Neurobiology is a way of thinking across this apparent conceptual divide.

For Those Interested in Psychology and Brain Health

"What you do with your mind can change the structure of your brain." ~ Daniel J. Siegel

The "Pocket Guide to Interpersonal Neurobiology" is not for the casual reader. It takes quite a good deal of knowledge of the brain and of related psychology terminology to understand the great ideas in this book. If you read a lot of psychology books this might be for you. I understood a lot but was also sometimes adrift when confronted with unfamiliar territory. I did however learn a few things like that laughing promotes the healthy growth of the brain and that mental disorders are the results of impaired integration. I think this book would be good for therapists who are trying to get to the root of their client's problem.

Outstanding Guide to Understanding Brain Science

I've read about a dozen books on the science of the mind, including works by Ramachandran, Cozolino and Goleman. This is among the very best. It's really a small encyclopedia on the subject; (the technique he uses to point to other places where a specific topic is discussed is marvelous. It involves stars and bolding, not something that lend itself to easy explanation.)
Calling it a Pocket Guide really understates what it contains.
If you're new to brain science this isn't the place to start, but once you do have a feel for the subject this becomes a very handy reference.
I highly recommend it.

Chewy read, but a lot of good things to digest.

Very unconventional approach to presenting information...nonlinear, but very appropriate to the subject matter. Informative, insightful--you will do yourself a favor by reading with a bookmark in the glossary--you'll need it, but you'll walk away with a stronger vocabulary and a lot of useful insights.

Reading it for the second time on Kindle. Then ...

Reading it for the second time on Kindle. Then purchased a hard copy to share with selected friends. Readers need to be familiar with or willing to grasp Dr. Siegel's vocabulary, but it's worth the effort. Then purchased one of his books on adolescent psychology as a gift to a friends daughter that is starting a residency in pediatrics. This should probably sit on every doctors desk next to his PDR and Merck Manual.

Excellent Dictionary of the Concepts of Contemporary Work on Neuroplasticity and its Application of Human Interactions

This is an excellent dictionary style explanation of the concepts in contemporary work on neuroplasticity and interpersonal neurobiology. Siegel is especially talented at delivering complex material in a highly understandable way to the lay reader. It makes it easy to see the utility of these ideas in psychotherapy or any other human interaction. I have been working on a book about yoga practice that has been greatly assisted by this work.
