Spellbinding - I enjoyed the story very much. It kept me connected to the book every moment! I can't wait to read the next! -- Reader Great book - Mark Reps has shown he can write and tell a story with the best of this genre -- Readerxa0Very different - This story lead us through the prejudices and respects of the Native American and Anglo residents in a small town near a reservation, and the mysteries that eventually bring the two together. The author created a believable story and that's what I truly enjoy. Make me believe it, and tell a good story while doing it, and I'm pleased. This story fulfilled the need of good characters to walk the reader throughout -- Reader The recently re-edited NATIVE BLOOD is the opening book in the ZEB HANKS series. All take place in and around Safford, AZ and the San Carlos Reservation.xa0Also, outside of the ZEB HANKS series, Mark Reps has published HEARTLAND HEROES and BUTTERFLY. Mark Reps has been a writer and storyteller his whole life. Born in small town southeastern Minnesota, he trained as a mathematician and chiropractor but never lost his love of telling or writing a good story. As an avid desert wilderness hiker Mark spends a great deal of time roaming the desert and other terrains of southeastern Arizona from December to May. A chance meeting with an old time colorful sheriff led him to develop the Zeb Hanks character and the world that surrounds him. Mark returns often to SE Arizona for inspiration, information and to maintain the general feel of the area, learn its history and understand the local residents. When Mark started writing he became pen pals with Tony Hillerman who offered up tips, criticism and ideas on some of his early novels. His books are often compared with the Longmire television series and books by Craig Johnson. Features & Highlights

  • The dead never leave us but they whisper ghost stories that bring the past back to life.
  • Sheriff Zeb Hanks has returned home to Graham County only to be confronted with the murder of an Apache girl whose death is eerily reminiscent of an unsolved murder committed seven years earlier. Both deaths involve granddaughters of the men who mentored Zeb in his youth. The fact that the recent murder took place on San Carlos Apache lands further complicates matters. The new tribal chairman has only reluctantly called on the Graham County Sheriff’s office for help and he’s made it clear that Zeb is not really welcome. With a vested interest in a case that involves a complexly woven web of Native American and Anglo cultures, Zeb discovers what it takes to be a sheriff, a friend and a man who understands the ways of the old west versus the new west.NATIVE BLOOD is the first book of the action-packed ZEB HANKS MYSTERY Series, that follows Sheriff Zeb Hanks, former Sheriff Jake Dablo, Medicine Man Jimmy Song Bird and others as Natives and Anglos work together to solve crimes in southeastern Arizona.

I haven't finished the book but the opening chapter was off-putting. I will re-review once I finish. I mainly wanted to comment on the reviews. A major complaint concerns grammatical errors and poor English usage which distracts from the story. Mr. Reps, please consider finding a retired jr. high or high school English teacher in your area. He or she could proofread your story in a very short time for a minimal amount. As a retired English teacher, I find myself spending more time correcting mistakes in my mind do I do in reading. You might also run it by someone really familiar with the area. I lived in Safford for nearly forty years and in the Globe-Miami area for four years before that. I bought the book because it was set in Safford. It was very disappointing to read reviews that said Safford and San Carlos were inaccurately portrayed.
I don't know if this will pass Amazon's "review critiquers". If not, I hope they will forward it to you if they believe you could benefit from reading it.

I I read this so that you won't have to

I don't write reviews much any more, but this was so awful I decided to perform a public service, to let you know what a waste of your money it would be to purchase it.
The good: the story is worth telling.
The bad:
1. But to be worth telling, It needs an editor with a huge red pen, to: (a) cut huge swaths of "filler" (about a quarter of the whole) completely away; (b) to erase the huge overuse of adverbs, adjectives, similes, and metaphors (sometimes as many as four in one sentence), and many - for instance, "pure white, "pure whiteness" - repeated over and over; (c) to correct sentences which make no sense whatsoever; and so on and so on.
2. The author obviously knows little or nothing of basic police work, e.g., the broken piece of tail light.
3. The author has just enough "knowledge" of Apache custom to make an incoherent mockery of Native American ways and means.
4. The murder is finally "solved" because someone with no direct connection to the case swoons (the author's word) and has a vision.
I could go on. The book insults law enforcement, psychology, Native Americans, and everybody and everything else it can get its hands on.
Don't waste your money.

The plot was great but they had to much detail and I do ...

The plot was great but they had to much detail and I do not care for the foul language.. It feels as if it was put in for effect instead of someone just talkingin everyday language... I however, do not use that language and will not buy another of his books.it runined the effect of the plot

Native Blook

Well written novel; seemed as if the author had a grip on native Americans, their cultural traits, and way of life. Reps infused this in his novel. Ordinarily I don't read novels, but would recommend this one to anyone interested in native American culture and a good mystery. Thank you!

Good Plot...Poor editing/proofing!

The main problem with the book is the editing/proofing. My husband has begun taking a pen to make the changes as he finishes the book. If the plot weren't so intriguing he would have put it down. If typo's don't bother you, go for it! If they do....find another book!

It was a good story.

With Tony Hillerman as my bench mark it would be hard to rate the story any higher. It was a good story.
