Description

Review by Sadie McCHeavy on western lore and atmosphere, this is a great book for mystery lovers to enjoy. The story is unique with obviously well-researched details. Light touches of humor kept the story from becoming too dark or clinical. For those who may have read author Reps' first book in this young series you are already acquainted with characters who feel like old acquaintances. Despite some slow spots this novel rates five stars for originality in a genre well-filled with other authors' work. To author Mark Reps I can only say MORE PLEASE. And hold the parsnips.Review by gluon70Reminds me of TV's "Longmire"This is an ongoing series and the characters are rounded. The sheriff of a small western town, just off a reservation, is faced with an odd apparent suicide, later what is clearly a murder disguised as a suicide and then a deputy is poisoned and, while like another reviewer, I figured out the who, at least in part, finding out the why made the story interesting.Secrecy, land grabs, murder and violations of trust, create a volatile situation. There is the interaction and intermingling of cultures and the almost desperation, on the part of tribe, to keep some sacred places open and unfettered, as places to feel close to God.Review by Cape Cod Reader Glad I found it.xa0This book got me started in the series and I truly enjoyed it. I think The best thing I can say about it is that it got me to read the rest of the series. Enjoy book 2 of the ZEB HANKS series, HOLES IN THE SKY. xa0While a fictional tale this book involves Mount Graham, long considered sacred by the Apache Tribe. Currently the University of MN, and University of AZ, the Max Planck Institute of Germany, the Catholic Church and others have co-opted the sacred land and placed powerful telescopes at its peak. xa0There has been a 30 year court battle over this issue, which, as yet, is unresolved. Features & Highlights

  • HOLES IN THE SKY is the story of the battle between the progress of man and what is traditionally considered holy and sacred. This particular battle is fought near the San Carlos Apache Reservation and Safford, AZ on Mount Graham. The site is considered sacred Apache land and is believed to be the mystical connecting point between heaven and earth. Questions arise in town and on the reservation when land on Mount Graham is cunningly sold piece by piece to a mysterious group via a shell corporation for unknown purposes. When dead bodies start appearing, the investigation, led by Sheriff Zeb Hanks and his team, leads directly into a culture war and the darker side of human behavior. Every side in this complex mystery has their own idea of what is holy and sacred.HOLES IN THE SKY is the second book in the series ZEB HANKS: SMALL TOWN SHERIFF BIG TIME TROUBLE that takes place in and around Safford, AZ and the San Carlos Apache Reservation. NATIVE BLOOD was the first book in the series."Another great book - I loved reading this series. The life of Zebulon Hanks coupled with the other supporting characters brings the area into focus. Add in the history and the current conditions of rez life and it's a wonderful read." -- Reader"Fans of Longmire and Tony Hillerman will enjoy Zeb Hanks." -- Reader

I read the first book and liked a lot of things about it and overlooked a lot. I liked the setting and premise.

This one needs a more critical look. He needs someone to cut out the purple prose ànd remove at least one adjective ànd adverb every line. For example "The dying priest's stench-filled breath echoed shallowly in his captor's ears." And this is only in the first few pages.

Mark Reps must be a really nice guy and have a lot of friends because his reviews are good. I just don't understand it.

A good story

This book is a great tale based on old and ancient tradition. It brings one back to help understand the ways of the native people together with the reality of the last century, and more, of the outside meddling by large companies, the government and religious institutions. It does a good job to convey the feelings of the characters and their personal relationships. A nice tale much enjoyed.
