Description

From School Library Journal She is taken in a flash, thrown into the back of a van, tied up, and blindfolded. She is 16, pregnant, and in trouble. The room she is taken to is three floors up—a farmhouse, perhaps? The man who kidnapped her comes in at precisely the same time three times a day to give her food. A doctor comes to check on the health of her baby, and once, a couple comes to be assured that their new baby—her baby—will be blue-eyed and healthy. She waits. She collects "assets," such as the handle from the bathroom bucket, a towel, or a blanket. She practices her escape and plans her revenge. Kirk's brilliantly executed novel alternates between the kidnapped girl and Special Agent Roger Liu—the detective assigned to find her. He and his partner slowly and methodically collect clues as they make their way to the remote hideaway. Meanwhile, the kidnapped girl is stuck in the room awaiting her certain death at the hands of the brutal man and his partners. But her brilliance is exceeded only by her ability to plan, calculate, observe, and wait. The abductors never have a chance as she orchestrates a conclusion that will leave readers satisfied and possibly unsettled. Readers wait with her as she ponders the right moment to make a move even as they suspect that it might not work. VERDICT Give this to teens who read Stephen King and other psychological thrillers, especially those with a penchant for dark and violent suspense.—Connie Williams, Petaluma High School, CA “Completely original and totally kick ass! Shannon Kirk pulls no punches in this adrenaline rush of a thriller where the victim is the one to watch, while the kidnappers learn to fear. Loved it!” —Lisa Gardner, New York Times best-selling author “ Method 15/33 is crowded with fascinating characters but the standout is the kidnapped pregnant teenager. Her captors want her baby. Little do they know they've brought an insanely brilliant, angry, vengeful, borderline sociopath under their roof.” —F. Paul Wilson, New York Times best-selling author * “In Kirk’s harrowing first novel, a kidnap victim—16 years old and pregnant—meticulously plots her escape . . . This exciting tale builds to a surprising climax.” — Publishers Weekly (Starred Review) * “Nietzsche warned us to beware of people with a strong desire to punish. That thought lingers after putting down this dark, disturbing, damnably readable novel . . . a worthy challenge, a joy to discuss . . .” — Booklist (Starred Review) * “Give this to teens who read Stephen King and other psychological thrillers, especially those with a penchant for dark and violent suspense.” — School Library Journal (Starred Review) “Shannon Kirk’s riveting debut novel, Method 15/33 , features kidnapped pregnant teen Lisa Yyland. Readers will see parallels between Lisa and Lisbeth Salander from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo , both victims who refuse to be victimized . . . Welcome a thrilling new voice in crime fiction.” — The Boston Globe “Wow. Ridiculously good. Crazy good. Brilliantly heart-stoppingly nail-bitingly original, this is a true thriller tour de force. Shannon Kirk is an instant star.” —Hank Philippi Ryan, Anthony, Agatha, and Mary Higgins Clark Award-winning author “What happens when infant traffickers kidnap the wrong pregnant teen? You get Method 15/33 , a cross between The Lovely Bones and Silence of the Lambs . Shannon’s debut thriller is a dark, literate page-turner, utterly compelling.” —Leonard Rosen, award-winning author “Kidnapped, close to death, and about to give birth, this thriller’s brilliant and slightly sociopathic protagonist is determined not only to save herself and her baby, but also to exact a horrible revenge on her captors. A gripping, unsettling work with a young woman who is unrelenting in her single-minded pursuit of her mission.” —Best Adult Books 4 Teens, School Library Journal “ Method 15/33 takes us to some very dark places, and at times, we can’t help but wonder whose soul is the darker—the captor’s or the captive’s . . .” — Mystery Scene “Shannon Kirk’s brilliant Method 15/33 . . . delivers, big-time . . . Kirk’s choice of protagonist for this crime thriller is utter gold . . . Method 15/33 is a solid winner.” — Foreword Reviews Shannon Kirk is a practicing attorney and a law professor. Hire an editor!

I wish I could rate this book higher, because I really liked the story and the characters, but the need for a competent editor took me right out of the story. To me, being a good storyteller is much more important than being a good speller, but that's why you hire an editor. Some examples in this book are misspelling hussle for hustle, describing pores on someone's face as pours, and the sentence that begins, "Together, her and her contraption appeared like a shriveled balloon" should be "she and her". I know this seems like nitpicking, but these things scream amateurish and lessen an otherwise good story.

Incredibly good psychological thriller

"Method 15/33" by Shannon Kirk is a true psychological thriller. Sixteen year old pregnant girls are being kidnapped and the police have no clue why or who is behind the crime spree. We meet Lisa, an incredibly smart and cunning young lady who is seven months pregnant when she is kidnapped as she is walking to school. The police don't investigate too closely into any of these cases of kidnapping because it is unclear whether the girls have run away because of their situation or whether it is in fact a kidnapping. There is no ransom demand. The kidnappers want the victim's unborn children.

The book centers around Lisa's brilliant ability to categorize her memories and break down details that will ultimately help her escape. Lisa studies her jailer and concocts a plan to seek revenge upon all involved in the heinous plan to kill her and steal her baby.

There are also FBI agents following leads but they have few resources, it's only the two agents looking for the missing teen. They're own history plays perfectly into the plot of this book and gives the reader insight into how previous psychological damage in the agents help them track down their victim and also help the agents understand the actions Lisa took to survive.

This book is a solid five out of five. I know some other reviewers found details about Method 15/33 unbelievable but I know people like Lisa. They are not sociopathic but they do have the unusual ability to shut off emotions that will do them no good in certain situations. Although this thriller is unique, the psychology of survival juxtaposed against super intelligence is exciting to experience and keeps the reader enthralled. I highly recommend this book, although you may not want to read it in the dark!

who do you fear for the most, the 16 year old prisoner or the kidnapper

From page one I was gripped and couldn't put this book down, a 16 year old pregnant girl who has just been kidnapped is more or less telling us that her abductor is going to suffer at her hands sooner rather then later and the reader is left thinking well who do I fear most, the kidnapper or the teenager!! We are given an in-depth description at all times of the young girls surroundings. But this ain't no ordinary teenage girl as you will find out as the story progresses and these baby traffickers find out that they have kidnapped the wrong pregnant teenager as she has a more psychotic mind then they have themselves. Read it you won't be disappointed x

or scream like the others did

**I received an ARC of this story in exchange for an honest review
She traveled for two days in a van with her abductor. She didn't beg, cry, or scream like the others did. She needed a constant. The only one she had was steady detachment. She had visitors while being held. She nicknamed one The Doctor and one Mr. Obvious.
I tried but I couldn't get into this book in any way.

I'd Rather Be At The Beach: Reviews

Wow! This was quite a twist on a kidnapping scheme. The kidnapper was used to girls who were the epitome of victim, but when he kidnapped Lisa he grabbed the wrong girl. She could turn her emotions off and on at will. She had a keen eye and mind for the smallest detail, things almost everyone else wouldn’t take notice of. She was cold and calculating. And she was going to escape with her baby no matter what it took.

When she was thrown in the van he blindfolded her but she could still see since he didn’t tie it tight enough. She made sure to pay attention where they went so she’d know where she was taken and how to get back when she escaped. Once they got to where he was going to keep her, she decided to be the perfect victim. She said please and thank you and made him think she was going to be no problem at all. And that’s exactly what he thought. Boy was he wrong!

I’m really struggling on what to add, I don’t want to give anything away. There are so many twists and more characters come into the story. I guess I’ll finish with this was one of those books that I’ll remember for a very long time. It is probably going to be re-read a few times.

I’ve read a lot of books with a kidnapping theme, but this was so different that my mind is still trying to process it. Yes, other books have had the person kidnapped escape and get revenge but this book this character was even more manipulative than the kidnapper. This book reminds me of Still Missing by Chevy Stevens. Both are first novels for the authors. Both are about kidnappings. Both women get revenge. I loved Still Missing, but this book takes the main character to another level.

If you love books like this then get a copy now. It was amazing!

If you are looking for a thriller that you can't put down - you have found it!

I don't always read thrillers, but I must say that this one was so worth the read! The author allows us inside the mind of the young, kidnapped pregnant girl in a way that made me feel like I knew her personally. This was one of those books that stayed with me when I put it down - although I could barely put it down. The characters came to life with a plot and a back story that was absolutely fascinating. I highly recommend this book!

psychological thriller

I was provided with a copy of this book for my honest review. In the psychological thriller Method 15/33 by Shannon Kirk, kidnappers are working in concert to abduct pregnant teen girls. Federal agents are stumped with very few leads to follow and very little manpower with only two agents assigned to the case.

One of the abductees, a cunning teenage science prodigy in the seventh month of her pregnancy, was snatched off of the road into a filthy van on her way to school, walking alone. Her case is handed off to the wrong department; law enforcement thinks she’s a runaway, not an abductee, and no one asks for a ransom. We soon learn that the kidnappers are not after money; they are ruthlessly and violently collecting the children of the victims.

The book’s focus is on one abductee’s ability to coldly calculate the assets available to her within her surroundings to concoct a plan that will help her and her unborn child escape with their lives while simultaneously exacting revenge upon the perpetrators. Having trained herself over the course of her life to be able to turn on and off her emotions like a switch so that she doesn’t have to feel anything that might be potentially painful for her to process and deal with, the girl studies her jailer with scientific precision until she is sure of his movements, behaviors, flaws, and weaknesses, and plots her method of escape and revenge. Sadly, she has no clue what’s happening in the rest of the house once she makes it out of that room.

We learn more about the FBI agents who are assigned to the case, their backgrounds, why they decided on the career paths they chose, and why certain aspects of the cases they solve are personal for them. We learn through their interactions and observations what their lives are like, and by the time we see their paths cross with the abducted girl who has delivered on nothing short of a Rube Goldberg machine of death, we understand how all of their various gifts could work in concert to bring down the kidnapping ring in a low manpower scenario without any backup on the way.

I highly recommend this book. I liked it up until the epilogue which seems to tie things up a little too neatly for my tastes – with a main character so hell-bent on having complete scientific control of the world around her, I would have liked to see her character arc affected by the chaos of the world around her and ultimately see her grow from that interaction rather than to have her need for control over the environment work out so well for her that her experience only serves to validate the compulsion. Still, this is a gripping page-turner and a great read as you try to picture what you would do in her shoes, growing attached to the girl and hoping for the best for her, her unborn child, and her family.

Method 15/33 is Shannon Kirk’s first novel. A Suffolk Law School alum, a practicing Massachusetts attorney, and a law professor, she has been honored three times by the Faulkner Society in the William Faulkner-William Wisdom Creative Writing Competition.
