Shannon Kirk’s In the Vines is a twisted psychological thriller about dark and disturbing family secrets. I devoured it in one sitting. This was one roller coaster of a ride and super creepy-scary.And I mean terrifying, petrifying, spine-chilling, blood-curdling, chilling, down right horrifying. All of the characters and settings are described so vividly that it is as if you are right there. It is packed with unpredictable twist and turns. In the beginning it is confusing. It is told in three different POVs two sisters and a daughter/niece with a timeline that jumps around. (After about 3 chapters it was less confusing). Each chapter has who is speaking and time frame. The story begins slowly and gradually picks up speed .From the beginning this story hooks you. You want to know why Aunty Liv has done the awful things she has done. Every page, every chapter was a heart pounding page turner.

This book is has it all. Family secrets, mental illness, love , loss , psychotic characters, terror, suspense, gory, twists and turns, violence, complicated family relationships, disappointment, jealousy, revenge, murder, and craziness. There are definitely scenes of graphic violence, so this is not a book for the faint of heart. It kept me guessing and unable to put it down! It was so fascinating, and twisted.

By the end of the story everything was explained. The ending is so terrifying and so unexpected that you won’t believe the lies , betrayals and deception that are revealed.

If you’re looking for a dark and highly compelling read that will have you on the edge of your seat, look no further because In the Vines is the book for you. It is a very disturbing novel that will stay in your mind for a very long time.

Unrelenting drama and terror by a brilliant author

What a fun, crazy book to read. It is both fascinating and creepy-scary. You won’t find a more intense drama. I mean bam! From the very start.

Blows your socks off in the confusion and you don’t recover until the end. The unusual style of writing and dual character perspective pulls you into insanity and terror. It continues, pushes relentlessly. Let go of your usual expectations. Go with it, enter the horror show if you dare, step into deadly chaos.

I love the seaside background and the super rich, eccentric family characters. It all seems so real you wonder if the author is not herself from a very rich family.

The main characters are all women, which I love. Reading a female writer’s women is the best, especially for a male like me, an avid reader, but used to reading other men. When male writers write about women it never seems real, authentic. We men can never know the inner depths. My strong preference now is to read women writers. With then it is easy to grow and expand your mind by absorbing their perspective, their stories.

Bottom line for me, this is a brilliant book that hurtles you tumbling into a dark world of bizarre horror. Even though these are women in extreme circumstances - this is after all a terror novel - they seem to me to be real women, not a man’s projection. That alone makes this a very good book, but I give it five stars top rating because it does not stop there. It begins and ends in a literal and figurative hurricane of intense passion. I love the book because of this and look forward to reading it again.

Hopefully Hollywood will make this into a movie some day because the scenes painted by this book in mind’s eye are incredible, beautiful, powerful and scary freaky. Plus the drama explodes in gushers of action and psychosis. It really takes you into the head of insanity.

Are you afraid of the savage beast inside, if so this book may be too intense for you. Feeling brave? Dare to read this book!

Hooked from the beginning - I Need More

I fell in love with MOP..I’m not afraid to admit as a mother... She is a champion. I identified myself in her as a younger woman....Between the loyalty in family love and the secrets! each narrator brought me into the place where my heart would beat along with their cadences. I absolutely am incomplete and it has nothing to do with the ending. I became invested and need more!
