It's the sounds, the smells, the people, the passion. History should make you think: "I was there". My books are born from my obsession with Roman history. I've followed Spartacus's trail across Italy. I've stood at Cannae and pictured Hannibal's army meeting the massed legions of Rome. I've watched the sea lapping against the fortifications of Syracuse, besieged by the Romans for close to two years. Immerse yourself in these incredible stories and -- like me -- remind yourself why the legend of Rome endures.'

  • Under the merciless Sicilian sun, a city is at war.   Outside the walls, a vast Roman army waits. Yet the city's incredible defences, designed by Archimedes, mean that Syracuse will not be taken easily. A veteran of the bitter war since its beginning, Quintus is ready to give his life in the service of the Republic. But dangers face him from within his own ranks as well as from the enemy -- who include his former friend, the Carthaginian, Hanno.      Hanno has been sent by his general Hannibal to aid Syracuse in its fight against Rome. Pledged to bring death to all Romans, he is diverted from his mission by the discovery of Quintus' sister Aurelia, a captive within the city. Two friends on opposing sides. A woman caught between them. They are about to meet in one of the most brutal sieges of all time.

Fantastic read

I'm not sure there's anything Ben Kane can write that I won't love reading. His books just keep getting better and better and as soon as you think they can't get any better, they do! Like the others, this book was easy to read and absorb into the settings. Emotional roll coaster at times as always which just goes to prove that Ben can place you into his world and make you believe you are actually there and with the characters. 10/10 would recommend, even if this genre isn't your normal cup of tea.

Informative but absurd plot.

My biggest problem with the book is that the relationship among the characters is so contrary to the historical realities of Roman and Carthaginian society that it overshadowed all the good things about the book. The idea that at the time of the Second Punic War that a daughter of a Roman aristocrat would run off with a Carthaginian slave is beyond absurd. When you add to the mix that Aurelia's father was killed by the Carthaginians and her brother was fighting against them, makes the Kane's story impossible to enjoy. Kane has an agenda. He wants to rehabilitate the Carthaginians' reputation. In so doing he whitewashed the Hannibal's army and culture. (This is a culture that practiced infant sacrifices and worshiped the most vile fertility gods and goddess in human history.)

If you like historical fiction, this is a must

I was new to Ben Kane novels, and read this whole trilogy from cover to cover whilst on holiday. I would highly recommend these well written, entertaining and thought provoking novels.

engaging with some twists

I really enjoy the fast pace of the book. If you are looking for an entertaining series of books that follows two very likable characters who are on different sides of the Rome/Carthage conflict, this is the series for you. Great background on the underlying friction between the two warring countries.
