Description

From Publishers Weekly As the artist's collages emulate animal movements, children will "eagerly clap, stomp, kick and wriggle their way through these pages," said PW. Ages 4-8. (Oct.) Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc. What does an elephant do? It stomps its foot. Can you? From the creator of such beloved classics as The Grouchy Ladybug and The Mixed-Up Chameleon comes this interactive story that invites kids to imitate animal movements. Watching giraffes bend their necks or monkeys wave their arms is fun, but nothing could be better than joining in. From their heads down to their toes, kids will be wriggling, jiggling, and giggling as they try to keep up with these animals!Alligators wiggle, elephants stop, gorillas thump, and giraffes bend. Can you do it? ‘ I can do it!’ is the confidence-building message of this fun-filled interactive picture book. A variety of familiar animals invite young children to copy their antics, and as they play, they will learn such important skills as careful listening, focusing attention, and following instructions. Just as alphabet books introduce the very young child to letters and simple words, From Head to Toe introduces the basic body parts and simple body movements. And in the same way that children progress from understanding simple words to reading and writing sentences and stories, so they will progress from simple body movements to dancing, gymnastics, and other sports and activities, with confidence and pleasure. Eric Carle's colorful collages have delighted children for more than a generation. Each book provides hours of fun while encouraging them to stretch their imaginations. His matchless words and illustrations now send out a new challenge: Are you ready? Here we go! Move yourself From Head to Toe. A Main Selection of the Children’s Book-of-the-Month Club Eric Carle was the creator of more than seventy picture books for young readers. Eric Carle was born in New York, USA. However, when he was just six, he moved with his parents to Germany. In 1952, after graduating from the prestigious Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Stuttgart, he fulfilled his dream of returning to New York. Eric Carle received many distinguished awards and honours for his work, including, in 2003, the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award for his lifetime contribution to children's literature and illustration. In 2002, fifty years after Carle's return to the United States, The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art was opened in Amherst, Massachusetts. Here visitors of all ages can enjoy, in addition to Eric Carle's work, original artwork by other distinguished children's book illustrators from around the world. Read more

Great for our watch and copy actions toddler!

To be honest, I'm not a huge Eric Carle fan. I like the books, but they aren't our go to's. However, this one really stands out. I love this one so much, because my 17 month old loves it. It's perfect for him, because it encourages interaction. He loves animals and all the pages have different things animals do, for you to copy. Touch your head, bend your neck, touch your toes, etc. He loves for us to read the captions, look at the simple pictures, and then copy what's being done. Perfect learning tool as we're teaching him what all the body parts are. It's a great size board book and perfect for his little hands. Really good quality - sturdy, excellent page thickness.

Great Shower Gift! Book Interests Babies at Many Levels!

I read FROM HEAD TO TOE to my baby, who is now 10 months old, and to a good friend's child, who is about 22 months old. Both enjoy it!

FROM HEAD TO TOE, like all of Eric Carle's books, offers multiple kinds of learning in one book. The first page shows a penguin saying "I am a penguin and I turn my head. Can you do it?" On the facing page, a girl has turned her heaed and answers, "I can do it!" We proceed through the book, going all the way down the body: head, neck, shoulders, arms, hands, chest, back, hips, knees, legs, foot, toes. At the same time, we meet an assortment of very appealing pictures of animals and learn their names: penguin, giraffe, buffalo, monkey, seal, gorilla, cat, crocodile, camel, donkey, elephant, and parrot.

I love that in the last pairing, the child takes action first: "I am I and I wiggle my toe. Can you do it?" This is followed by a parrot who copies the child wiggling his toe and says, "I can do it! I can do it!"

At our house, the 10-month-old is currently more inclined to enjoy the pictures, and is just starting to join in with the motions occasionally. The 22-month-old friend now joins in with many of the motions.

This is another great Eric Carle book, and will be a great addition to any child's early book collection.

Bright and Sturdy

Great board book for this Grandma to read with the little ones. Parents report this book is a bedtime favorite three weeks later. Apparently the three year old has it memorized and "helps" the infant do the motions. Parents substitute toys so baby isn't too abused.

great quality from this publisher

As usual, great quality from this publisher. My son beats up his board books but these same to last.

Eric Carle has an amazing way with illustrations but I thought the story was different (I thought it was teaching kids what each body part, but this is more about what they can do -- if that makes sense). It's a cute book but not sure I would buy it again (but that's on me for not knowing the story).

Great book!

My 18 month old son loves this book! He watched me do the movements as I read it and now he does them on his own when I read the book! Very cute and interactive.

I bought this because Eric Carle is amazing and this isn't one of his better known books

Okay, I bought this because Eric Carle is amazing and this isn't one of his better known books, so I figured there was a good chance my friends didn't own it yet. BUY THIS BOOK. I read the book aloud to my friends' three kids (all around the age of 3), and they jumped up and acted out each of the pages and giddily asked me to read it two more times. I don't know that you can get a better recommendation than that.

Beautiful Book

I was introduced to this book through Mister Roger’s episode with Eric Carle, and immediately ordered it. Although my two year old daughter has a speech delay, I would catch her looking through the book and saying the quote “I can do it!” As a mom, that’s everything! Such a fun, interactive book…and it happens to come in a nice compact size for reading on the go. HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT.

Please make sequels to this one!

This book has been an absolute delight for family bedtime reading. My little one could comprehend this book around 10-11 months and it was reading this that we first noticed her ability to respond to instructions. It was from reading this book that she first learned how to clap her hands. She's now 13 months old and we still look forward to reading this book with her.
