I'm Sold!!!!

I first saw Dr. Fuhrman on a PBS special. He caught my husband's interest, so I paid attention. I am usually the one who researches health & nutrition and am inspired only by a select few 'eating lifestyles'. It is difficult to inspire my husband tho, so I wanted to see what caught his attention. Well, after listening to Dr. Fuhrman for just a little while, I knew his advice had merit.
So I went to Amazon to see what books were available. Instead of the one advertised on PBS, I chose this one (Eat for Health). It seemed to have all the things I wanted, which were:
1. A thorough overview of the nutritarian plan.
2. A list of foods, with nutrient density scores. (This is a great at-a-glance reference tool)
3. Recipes (I ended up loving the recipe section even more than I imagined.)

The nutritarian plan includes similarities to about all of the things I love about a few other eating plans out there. These include the CRON diet (Calorie Restriction Optimal Nutrition), The Doug Kauffman Phase diets (anti-micotic), and the blood type diet (for type A's). The nutritarian diet is not exactly like any of the aforementioned diets, but does combine the best parts of them in a way that fits my preferences perfectly. And since my husband is now on board, I can finally cook the same way for both of us!

For those of you who are avid meat eaters, this book does not forbid meat all together. You can have it occasionally, but Dr. Fuhrman does not recommend it every day. He recommends that Poultry, eggs, fish, & fat free dairy comprise less than 10% of your calories, and red meat to be eaten rarely. For meat lovers, he has devised a way to gradually phase into the eating plan so that it will be a smoother transition. And if you think there is no way you could ever cut down on meat, please don't let that stop you from adopting the other eating habits in the book. You can still include some of the high density nutrient foods/recipes in your diet!

For me, there was really no transition at all. I absolutely love this way of life because I have always leaned toward vegetarianism. And I do want to note here, that it is a fallacy that all vegetarians are pasty, unhealthy people. When managed correctly, a person can eat a vegetarian diet and still get more than enough protein, and a huge amount of healthy nutrients. This does NOT mean filling up on carbs! I won't go into detail here, because the book explains it very well.

Suffice it to say, this is now my go-to book when I want diet inspiration, or unique recipes that are yummy! I have made some of the salad dressings, the smoothies, the anti-oxidant rich bars, etc, and have loved everything. Also, I would like to point out that when I use the term 'diet', I mean a way of life, not a temporary plan.

Ok, enough yapping. Bottom line, I'm a fan. I love this book and I feel great on this diet. Oh, I will say one more thing; I am not overweight, and my only medical issue is a sore neck & shoulders which flare up fairly often. I have had 3 previous injuries in those areas and now arthritis has developed. (I am 55). I have always eaten a fairly healthy diet, but since I've strictly eaten the "Eat For Health" way (about two weeks now), my soreness is pretty much non-existent and my range of motion is greatly improved. I can only conclude that this is a great anti-inflammatory way of eating!

Overall very happy because of the amount of recipes included!

The book is very good, but I like "Eat to Live" better by Dr. Joel Fuhrman. This book is not a convicting as "Eat to Live" but I basically purchased it because it has lots of really good recipes! Some of the information has been updated and answers any questions not answered in "Eat to Live". I would buy both and then you would have all the information necessary to make wise healthful choices.

Life changing read

Having had a year's worth of appointments with a registered dietician, I thought I knew a lot about nutrition. I was wrong! Dr Fuhrman has such a straightforward way of explaining the misconceptions of nutrition and healthy eating that once I read this book and understood the science of nutrition, I knew I was going to undergo the biggest health makeover of my life. Just 12 weeks later 30 lbs are gone, my BP is normal, and true to his word I enjoy eating this way. Read this book and take control of your health!

Excellent book

It seems dramatic to call it life-changing but it has been for me. I've lost weight steadily while learning how to cook and eat healthier food. My kids don't do the meal plan with me, but because I am eating so many vegetables and fruits, they are eating healthier too. I feel better than I have in years and the recipes are delicious. I bought the "Eat for Life" book first and found it difficult to jump right in at that level. This book gives you three different levels so made it easier for me to get started. Highly recommended.

This is not a diet book but a lifestyle book

Dr. Fuhrman explains that it is not about counting calories but eating well that will lead you to better health and weight loss ( the later is a side effect of eating better). This book is not just about losing weight to look good. It is for the motivated person who recognizes that for better health, a person must learn to eat better. This is not a vegetarian book but as the author describes it, a 'nutritarian' book. Even though he discourages animal products, he does not prohibit them.
If you are tired of taking pills for blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar, give this book a look.

Great information for a longer life!

This book is well written, easy to understand, lots of great recipes too! Easy to follow, Dr. Fuhrman makes excellent suggestions on how to slowly change the way a person eats. He doesn't insist on total change today, make a change here and a change there, make the transition to healthy eating slowly but surely. Great book if you are willing to do a little more work and feel a whole lot better!
