Features & Highlights

  • In the latest installment of his epic Byrnes family saga, Western Heritage and Spur Award-winning author Dusty Richards tells of the blood that was spilled trying to make Arizona Territory a good place to live . . .
  • Building a ranching empire is one thing, keeping it out of the hands of robbers, kidnappers, murderers, embezzlers, and every no good opportunist crawling through the Arizona desert is a daily grind for Chet Byrnes. He’s just as likely to rescue a stolen daughter as he is to recover rustled cattle on any given day. But with a family to keep safe and enough real target practice to keep his aim deadly, nothing’s going to stop Chet from bringing his ranch into a bold new era. And if that means he’ll have to go to war to run a new telegraph line through the godforsaken territories, he’s got the manpower, the willpower, and the bullets to light up the night with blood . . .
  • “Dusty takes readers into the real west at full gallop.” —
  • New York Times
  • bestselling author Jodi Thomas

As dry as burnt toast

I enjoy good western fiction and really wanted to like this book. I bought the paperback for the specific purpose of passing time in the airport while on a recent trip, Based on reviews and the writer's biography I thought it would be a worthy purchase. I couldn't have been more wrong. Mr. Richards may know a lot about Arizona history, but he seems to understand very little about how to craft a compelling, readable story (and even less about how to write women). "Deadly is the Night" is. burdened with a kitchen sink of cardboard characters, and that includes the protagonist. There are too many to keep straight and nothing to draw me in and make me care about any of them. The dialog is stilted and the story line (which seems to be a series of sub plots haphazardly strung together) is shallow. I haven't read any of the author's other works and am not likely to do so after attempting this one. "Deadly" is as dry as a piece of burnt toast and goes down with a struggle. It was a battle I conceded in the end, because I just couldn't finish.
