Features & Highlights

  • Teeming with marvelous, memorable characters in a novel that is a true masterpiece, Rosamunde Pilcher's
  • Coming Home―
  • the basis for the TV miniseries of the same name―is a book to be savored, reread, and cherished forever.
  • Against the backdrop of an elegant Cornwall mansion before World War II and a vast continent-spanning canvas during the turbulent war years, this involving story tells of an extraordinary young woman's coming of age, coming to grips with love and sadness, and in every sense of the term, coming home...In 1935, Judith Dunbar is left behind at a British boarding school when her mother and baby sister go off to join her father in Singapore. At Saint Ursula's, her friendship with Loveday Carey-Lewis sweeps her into the privileged, madcap world of the British aristocracy, teaching her about values, friendship, and wealth. But it will be the drama of war, as it wrenches Judith from those she cares about most, that will teach her about courage...and about love.

Loved this story

I bought this book for my daughter, have probably read my own copy 10 times. I love Rosamunde Pilcher and the way she writes. These characters still seem "real" to me, probably 25 years since I first read these stories. This book is a perfect gift for a teen girl, as it follows the main character from age 14-early twenties.

You never want this book to end!

This is the kind of sweeping story that you are pulled into and just don't want to ever end! It's a long book, but every page is interesting and relaxing, with beautiful descriptions of pre-War (World War II) and wartime Britain. If you like that era (and I DO), you will love Pilcher's ability to evoke the feeling of what it was like to live then. I have read that this is her most autobiographical novel, so maybe that's why her descriptions are so very realistic and believable. I find Pilcher's books to be extremely relaxing; they have a way of taking me out of myself and leaving me feeling very satisfied at the end. She is a graceful writer with a true gift for story-telling, creating characters that are understandable and relatable.

Holds ones interest

I gave this book to my wife for Christmas, the following is her review:
Ever since I read the " Shell Seekers" I've been a fan of Rosamunde Pilcher. It's hard to put the book down as you want to know what the next chapter (and the next) will reveal about the characters, I recommend it for anyone that enjoys a well written novel.

This is one of the favorite books of my lifetime.

From the very beginning the characters were like old friends. The story takes place just before and during WWII, and Rosamund Pilcher hits it out of the park with her inclusion of so many different areas of the world and the affects on both the British and other people in the world. Coming Home beautifully illustrates that special feeling when one returns to the familiarity of a well loved place in the world. I can't say how much i loved this, but I continue to mourn that there will be no more Rosamund Pilcher novels. I have read them all and this one in particular grabbed my mind and heart and never let go.

Good read, went on too long

I over all enjoyed the story, she is a very good writer. Wish it had not gone on quite as long. It very well could have had parts left out and wrapped up with less pages!
