Features & Highlights

  • Greer Hennessy needs palm trees. As a movie location scout, picture-perfect is the name of the game. But her last project literally went up in flames, and her career is on the verge of flaming out. Greer has been given one more chance, if she can find the perfect undiscovered beach hideaway for a big-budget movie. She zeroes in on a sleepy Florida town called Cypress Key. But Eben Thibadeaux, the town’s mayor, objects to Greer’s plan. A lifelong resident of Cypress Key, Eben wants the town to be revitalized, not commercialized. Greer has a way of making things happen, regardless of obstacles. And Greer and Eb are way too attracted to one another for either of them to see reason. Between an ambitious director and his entourage―including a spoiled “It Boy” lead actor―who parachute into town, a conniving local ex-socialite, and a cast of local fangirls and opportunists who catch the movie bug, nothing is going to be the same in Cypress Key. Now Greer is forced to make some hard choices: about the people and the town she’s come to care about, and about her own life. True love is only for the movies, right? Can Greer find a way to be the heroine in her own life story? Told with inimitable heart and humor, Mary Kay Andrews’

A NOVEL By Mary Kay Andrews Mary Kay Andrews once again delivers a good summer read

BEACH TOWN: A NOVEL
By Mary Kay Andrews
[[ASIN:125006595X Beach Town: A Novel]]
Mary Kay Andrews once again delivers a good summer read. I enjoyed the hero, glasses and all. Her heroine, Greer, had a refreshingly , new occupation as a location scout and manager. I like learning new information while reading.
This was an pleasant read with a predictable romance between the two main characters. I had high hopes for their romance but it was predictable. I thought the heroine fell into bed much to easily and that she didn’t really have good reason for running away from Eb in the middle of the night. Eb the hero was much better drawn as a character. I liked the characterization of “Messiah Syndrome” for Eb. It seemed to fit him.
Andrews creates believable female characters to people the pages and to flesh out the novel. I felt for Allie all the way through. Being a teenage is always a difficult time for any girl and I cheered for as she battled her way through being taken in first by Kregg and secondly her realization of her father’s true character.
I would recommend this book as light reading and perfect to pick up and pick up again as I often do during the busy summertime.

Disappointing after great start

I've loved all of the Andrews' books that I've read so far and I was smiling through the first 2/3 of Beach Town. Then, profound disappointment with virtually every plot line. Not trying to give away too much but I didn't buy the pace of the romance and worse, was beyond frustrated at what happened with the career aspect of this strong woman who obviously loved her job and excelled at it. I tried to stay optimistic that Andrews would pull it off in the end, even hopefully as I read the epilogue but finished it even more annoyed. I typically keep a book for a bit for rereads; after closing the cover of Beach Town I dropped it in the library-giveaway basket.

I like the edginess of the story - such as it ...

Typical formulaic dribble without the usual wit. I like the edginess of the story - such as it is - but three lines into the chapter of her first morning in the hotel I knew exactly what was going to happen. I'm not spending any more money on her books. Just tell me the character's names and where they are supposed to be this time and I can tell you how it will end. Get some imagination please.

Wanted to like it

Seemed like the perfect summer read, and the description was promising. However, I didn't really like the main character. I thought she was kind of a jerk, and didn't have a lot of personality. The chemistry between the two main characters fell flat. no other interesting characters. Too bad because the book had a great premise.
