Description

In the latest mystery from New York Times bestselling author Charles Todd, World War I nurse and amateur sleuth Bess Crawford investigates an old murder that occurred during her childhood in India, and begins a search for the truth that will transform her and leave her pondering a troubling question: How can facts lie? In 1908, when a young Bess Crawford lived in India, an unforgettable incident darkened the otherwise happy time. Her father's regiment discovered it had a murderer in its ranks, an officer who killed five people yet was never brought to trial. A decade later, tending to the wounded on the battlefields of France during World War I, Bess learns from a dying man that the alleged murderer, Lieutenant Wade, is alive and serving at the Front. According to reliable reports, he'd died years before, so how did Wade escape India? What drove a good man to murder in cold blood? Bess uses her leave to investigate. But when she stumbles on the horrific truth, she is shaken to her very core. The facts reveal a reality that could have been her own fate. Charles Todd is the New York Times bestselling author of the Inspector Ian Rutledge mysteries, the Bess Crawford mysteries, and two stand-alone novels. A mother-and-son writing team, Caroline passed away in August 2021 and Charles lives in Florida.

Very disappointed. Flat

Very disappointed. Flat. Lots of words, no forward action. Decent beginning, decent end. The vast majority of the book though is circular. Same actions and events over and over. First Charles Todd I had to force myself to finish. Both characters I have enjoyed in the past are stiff and colorless.

I've always enjoyed Charles Todd's mysteries

I've always enjoyed Charles Todd's mysteries. This one started out good, with an intriguing plot. As the story continued the characters (Bess, the lieutenant, the Caswells, Bingham, Sudebah et al). became involved in the plot (or did they?). There was so much back and forth from London to India to Germany to France that after awhile a scorecard was needed. I don't know how this author team (mother and son) were able to keep this story in sequence given all the locations, characters, photographs, etc. It was a struggle for me to finish. I hope the next one by Todd is more straightforward and a lot easier to "navigate."

One of the best in series

I have enjoyed reading the books in this series by Charles Todd. Leaning more of WWI through a good novel is a great way to learn about history.

An Intrepid Heroine

This is part of an excellent series. Very well written. The heroine is devoted to solving puzzles re some of those who fought in World War I. Descriptions of the wounds of war are striking. This is history and mystery and will not disappoint readers.

Spellbinding Historical Mystery

Great book in the Bess Crawford historical mystery series. I had never known this author (actually a motyer-son writing team) prior to reading the first book in n the series. They are well written and fast paced, set in the trials of World War I, in both the fighting front in France and b in Bess Crawford's England. It is a great group of books that I will share with my daughter.

Honor matters to women too

A woman at war tries to deal with death by guns and bombs, even as she encounters deliberate murder. The book kept my interest and seems to do a good job of looking at the role of nurses in the Great War.

Waste of time for a serious reader

Seriously lacking in anything that makes me want to read a book. Poor writing style. But,if you are fascinated by the Raj, and love whodunnit's, then this is the book for you. But NOT for me!
