Cultural Appropriation

I will not buy this book because it represents the worst kind of cultural appropration and gives nothing back to Hawai'i.

Before dipping into Vitale's ersatz appropriation of an appropriation, which has been mistakenly labelled "Hawaiian," get an authentic sense of the culture and history of Hawai'i by reading [[ASIN:0824820592 From a Native Daughter: Colonialism and Sovereignty in Hawaii (Latitude 20 Books)]]; [[ASIN:082233349X Aloha Betrayed: Native Hawaiian Resistance to American Colonialism (a John Hope Franklin Center Book)]]; [[ASIN:0824815009 Ku Kanaka: Stand Tall: A Search For Hawaiian Values]]; [[ASIN:096167380X Nana I Ke Kumu (Look to the Source) volume I]]; [[ASIN:0962803006 Tales from the Night Rainbow]]; [[ASIN:0822340798 Hawaiian Blood: Colonialism and the Politics of Sovereignty and Indigeneity (Narrating Native Histories)]]; and others.

In a truly loving and forgiving world, a hefty percentage of the profits from this book written by Joe Vitale, and by others who appropriate, distort, and commodify elements of Hawaiian traditions, would be returned to Hawai'i to help improve the conditions of Native Hawaiians, who have the highest rates of houselessness, poor health, poverty, and incarceration in the islands. When land has been stolen and polluted, and traditions are appropriated, distorted, commodified, and sold with no give back - great harm is done. And such harm continues.

Unfortunately, I suspect that no profits from this book have been given back to the Native Hawaian people. Saying "I love you, I'm sorry, Please forgive me, Thank you" won't bring back the stolen land, cleanse the 'aina of depleted uranium and unexploded military ordnance , put food on the table, respect native gathering and fishing rights, provide a house that's not subject to inflated property taxes (due to an influx of moneyed outsiders), or provide employment to the displaced and jobless. Many Hawaiians will say, "my culture is not for sale," and offer their 'ike and mana'o as a gift to people who seem genuinely eager to learn. Unfortunately, many people have taken these gifts and turned around and sold them to others - bringing nothing back to the original teachers or community.

To me, cultural appropriation and commodifiation is not "pono" and striving for the state of being pono is what ho'oponopono is all about. I feel lucky to have learned ho'oponopono from a group of Morrnah Simeona's students who offer the teachings for free in Hawai'i, within an appropriate cultural context, as a public service. For this privilege, I look for opportunities give back to the community.

If you have benefited in anyway from any conveyance of ho'oponopono - whether through this book or others - please consider making a donation to a non-profit organization that promotes Native Hawaiian health and well-being. Or if you visit the islands, volunteer your time in some way that will benefit the people who orginated this wisdom stream.

Great book, love Dr. Hew Len, but be careful of Joe Vitale!

I loved this book! Loved learning about Ho'oponopono. It has changed my life. We also ordered the Zero Limits seminar DVDs from Joe Vitale's site, and that's when it got ugly. Joe has 'consultants' phone people who order the DVDs, and they say that you get a free 'personal empowerment' consultation from these experts. I was open to it and excited about learning more, but the guy who called me was disrespectful and all he did was keep pushing Joe 'Miracles Coaching' series at me. I set my boundaries and said I was not interested, and this guy said that if I wasn't interested in paying for coaching, then I obviously had 'trust' issues, and went on to diagnose me without knowing a thing about me. It's obvious that Joe did this only to market his coaching program. I felt so awful and put down after this phone call. Slimed in a way. I've lost a lot of respect for Joe Vitale, and I question his integrity. I had thought it would be strong because of his association with Dr. Hew Len, but now I don't think so. So, yes, definitely buy the book. But don't give anyone your phone number!!!

Wonderful book!

I originally read this book in hardback in June of 2007. I immediately put the information to work and have had numerous wonderful results from using the information in this book. I realized this review is overdue this past weekend when I did some Ho'oponopono on a situation that was subsequently resolved.

I've read some pretty negative reviews on this book. That's ok, it might not be for everyone all the time.

The thing that caught my attention about the information offered in this book was the concept that I was 100% responsible for my reality but not to blame. Whoa! I have considered myself always to be responsible, but until I read this book, I also thought I was to blame. What a concept, being responsible but not to blame.

My invitation to you is to read the book, look for the nuggets of useful information and release the rest. Give your ego a rest. Seriously give Ho'oponopono a try. This is not something you can read that will work magic on you. You will actually have to apply the information.

Love and peace.

Newage

I picked this book up at Barnes and Noble because it promised "everything I ever wanted," and easily, too. Well! How could I resist THAT? Since I know nothing about Ho'oponopono at all (although the terms "unihipili" and "uhana" are familiar to me in another context), I spent some time looking through the book. I'm sorry to say that the actual content of the book appears to be four valid statements: (1) I love you. (2) I'm sorry. (3) Please forgive me. (4) Thank you. And that's it! That's all! There is no information whatsoever about Ho'oponopono itself (I may look THAT up, as it sounds like there actually IS some interesting substance to Ho'oponopono). Joe declares that he is restricted from going into any depth about it in this book, and if he made that contractual promise to Dr. Hew Lem, then there's no help for it. Don't think I want to pay $25 for a hardcover pamphlet, though.

The rest of the book is pretty funny. It's PAGES and PAGES of plugs for Joe's other books and workshops, and an endless number of gooey testimonials. It also includes more information about Joe's custom sporty-car than I need to pay for, to say nothing of a business card (showing a picture of Joe and the Ride) which apparently can be used as a sort of magic "clearing" talisman. Heh. Joe is also apparently described by the Hawaiian guru Dr. Hew Len as the "J (for Jesus!) of business," which would probably crack Jesus of Nazareth up as much as it did me. Even given the mutual admiration society going on all through this book by Joe and Hew Lem (who talks to chairs!), I'm afraid this book gave me more giggles than guidance.

This book is a sucker trap. (Where is Stan Freberg of "Green Christmas" fame now that we need him?)

I'm Sorry I bought the book, I love myself even though I did!

I was so miffed to see all the negative reviews here about this book as I had already bought the book. I read the book in a day and found it to be one of the most boring, uninspiring self help books I have ever read and I have read literally hundreds! I found Vitale's writing style full of his own experiences, and I don't mean a few I mean nearly all of the book is written about him. In one part the Hooponopono guru Dr Hew Len says that during a healing session that 'he' should be at Vitale's feet, not the other way around because he was in awe of the man. I MEAN PLEASE!!! I have read one other book of his called the attractor factor and in both of these books Vitale constantly talks about a flash car and what it cost him. TELL ME SOMETHING INTERESTING ALREADY!! Actually the book is very boring to read however the concept of Hoonopono was good in itself, I just felt that Vitale was the wrong author to write about this with integrity. Could it be that a rich western man decides to go to Hawaii to a man who was willing to give up part of the healing practices of the indigenous peoples for a good chunk of the pie? I am indigeous to my country and we guard our cultural practises closely, incase any money hungry people choose to sell them for a profit. So as a result I look on this with suspicion. I guess I was one of the suckers who bought this book so Vitale could go and put a deposit on a new 'flash' car. NEXT GURU PLEASE! (tongue in cheek).

Zero Information is more like it.

I read through all the reviews and decided to read this book anyway. It was the first time I had ever read any of Mr. Vitale's books but I wanted to learn more about "Ho Oponopono". Now I have just one question: Why would you choose to write a book for which you are unable to provide much information because you signed a confidentiality contract??!!?? There is nothing in this book on Ho Oponopono that I did not already get from the Internet. This book was a great list of other books and products (none of them about Ho Oponopono). If you want that kind of information, then it could be useful. But I thought it was a book on "Ho Oponopono"...Based on other reviewers, I read "THE EASIEST WAY" by Mabel Katz. "THE EASIEST WAY", although just a fraction in size of Mr. Vitale's book, did a much better job of explaining Ho Oponopono AND actually provided some tools in a short number of pages. I found myself looking for more of her work. Ms.Katz's book is worth a read for those wanting more information on Ho Oponopono. There is some truth to the saying "Under-promise and over-deliver". "Zero Limits" does not over-deliver.

BTW,I read this book a while ago and did not submit a review b/c I wanted to give Mr. Vitale the benefit of a doubt, hoping I was just being too harsh on him since it was the first of his books that I had read. So I read another book of his, The Key. I made it a game of counting the number of pages I could read before some mention is made of one of his products. And it kind of made me mad that he is so disrespectful of my time and money. Mad enough to log onto Amazon and warn other potential readers and write this review.

Just a Marketing Ploy

I had seen Joe Vitale in "The Secret" and had high hopes for this book. It is actually quite poorly written, and just a big marketing ploy. The entire content could be boiled down into about 50 pages, but he just keeps repeating the same information over and over and touting all of his other products and websites. It's interesting that one of the main points of this book is that intention and manfestation are useless because the Divine will decide what you need and give it to you, yet he pushes all of his manifestation and intention products within the book. It's also interesting to note on his website that he is no longer doing seminars with the subject of the book.

I did get a few really good messages from the book, but overall, I was disappointed.

This is a life changer

I recommend this book to all my students and clients. It's simple, yet profound. I, myself, read this book over and over again, and use Ho'Oponopono, daily. I first discovered the long version of Ho'Oponopono in Hawaii, the 60's. It was great, but it was a project to accomplish. I still use the long version, occasionally, but big thanks to Joe Vitale and Dr Len Hew for making this short version available to the world. It makes the spirit of Ho'Oponopono accessible and, still, wonderfully effective.
