Description

“Myotai’s gem of a book, in its conciseness, practicality, beauty, and magic, is a fine introduction to mystical realism. Encountering its pages, you peer through facets of a diamond, in the end recognizing that you are holding a ball of crystal clear light in your hands. In Myotai’s treatment, and under her guidance, the kitchen sink filled with dirty dishes, a walk in the park, a flare-up of a strong emotions, your body and breath become entryways into the inconceivable, and a passionate call for boundlessness of clarity and granularity of kindness.” —Konrad Ryushin Marchaj, Zen Priest and Teacher “If you’ve never meditated before and want to start, Myotai Treace’s Zen Meditation for Beginners is for you. It's crystal clear, wonderfully readable, humorous, and gets right to the point. Its 10 basic principles remind beginners as well as seasoned meditators of the wisdom and humanity embedded in this simple and exquisite practice.” —Roshi Eve Myonen Marko, Co-Author of The Book of Householder Koans “ Zen Meditation for Beginners is a welcoming invitation to enter the path of Zen from wherever you are. The encouragement is just to begin. As a skilled and experienced meditation teacher, Myotai Sensei answers every question likely to arise for a new student, and provides concise, accessible instructions and exercises for anyone seeking to build a meaning-filled meditation practice relevant to their daily life.” —Lisa Schaewe, Mindfulness Instructor, Psychotherapist, Artist Bonnie Myotai Treace is a Zen priest and teacher. For 20-plus years she was a monastic and taught at Zen Mountain Monastery and the Zen Center of New York City. Perfect Entry Point. Perfect Reminder.

There are many books about Zen out there. There are also many books about Zen that are good starting points and the question is often asked "what's the best book for someone who wants to learn more about Zen and meditation". Add this one to the list and put it near the top!

Myotai has done a great job distilling many years, many books read, many hours sitting in silent meditation, many lessons learned from teachers, and many students taught into an easy to digest book that will lead you on a journey toward inner peace. I really like how the book is outlined to not only inform, but give you exercises and practical things you can do whether you have just a few minutes or more to devote to it.

For the more experienced Zen practitioners, this book is a treasure trove of reminders and pointers that will be forever useful as we continue on our path as Bodhisattvas. I also love the way this book is designed so that you can indeed read it cover to cover, but can also just flip through it and find something useful right now, because in the end all we have is right now. _/\_

A great place to start and continue!

One mark of quality of a work of art, whether it is visual, audial, of movement, or written, is the fact that one is able to return to it and continually discover new things. Myotai Sensei has provided us a book that is not only a blueprint for beginners to Zen and Zen meditation, but also a blueprint for what is known in the Zen tradition as “beginners mind”.

Great guide!

A lot of great practical tips an exercises without being too "out there".

The purpose of this book is to calm the mind, maybe take a look at some negative behaviors and ask yourself if you really want to keep repeating them.

Good book for just taking stock of yourself and doing a bit of a mental tune up.

Inner calm

Nicely put together tome on the basics of Zen meditation structured around 10 principles (chapters) each of which have an accompanying meditation exercise and a post meditation exercise that helps with reframing the practice. The book itself is compact and very straightforward in language and approach. A scattering of black and white illustrations within the chapters enhances the vibe and sets the mood.

This is excellent for all meditators

I really appreciate how this was written. I have read a lot of meditation books and this is one of my favorites so far. It can be beneficial for someone new to meditation or someone who has done it for awhile. I appreciate how you can read this and try things out at your own pace. I have been reading several exercises at a time and then picking the one that seems more helpful for that moment. The author writes with simplicity and humor. I keep this book on my kitchen table and recommend you all get it. This book will make your world a better place.

Not just for beginners.....

I’m not a beginner to meditation, but only a few years into it. I like to read everything I can just to get a well rounded view of Zen and some history of Buddhism. I find that gathering others perspectives and knowledge helps me find my own truths. I’m not much for guided meditation, as I just like to sit and be open to anything. But I found real value in this book and found myself rereading lots of pages because they were packed with interesting thoughts and information. I actually thought the book was put together nicely into bite size sections. They were easy to follow and easy to pick up where I left off. You may call it simple, but that’s what I want in my meditation. Simple and clutter free ideas. Guide me, don’t teach me , we are all experiencing a different truth. There’s no room to be critical of another’s truths and I’m grateful for everyone who shares their own experiences. Give it chance if you’re new , or fairly new to meditation and I think you’ll find some value too ! 🙏
