Description

There is a reason these books are getting 5 star reviews - they are SO HELPFUL. I started reading the Book of Mormon for the first time, and although I could read it and thought I was getting through it fairly well, I realized pretty quickly that there was a lot of symbolism and more going on with the text than I was getting or understanding. I read reviews on these books and purchased the first one, not knowing what to expect. It has helped me so much!!! As I suspected, there is so much "more" going on in the Book of Mormon and so much symbolism I NEVER would have gotten on my own no matter how many times I would have read it. I have quickly purchased the other 2 books in this series, as well as another book by this author about Mormon beliefs and doctrines. The entire text of the Book of Mormon is in these books, but with helpful notes and explanations so that I understand it. I can see myself reading these books and referencing them many times in the future. If you are completely new to the Book of Mormon like I was, in my opinion, you NEED this. Even if you've read the whole Book of Mormon before, I still think you are going to get new insights from these books. --AmazonI love this guide! I love that is lists the scriptures and then either inserts emphasis, summaries, explanation, etc within the scripture or after it. It really helps to break it down and come back together to make sense is my crazy brain! I highly suggest it to anyone wanting to get a deeper understanding of the scriptures but also how it applies to your life today. It deepened my testimony of Christ because I was really able to see more significantly how much Christ is present throughout the Book Of Mormon. I can't wait to read the other ones! --AmazonDavid Ridges is a master teacher. His classes at BYU Education Week and at the Orem (Utah) LDS Institute have been the best I have ever attended. Very instructional AND interesting (even Isaiah). I could listen to him teach all day. So I was thrilled when he wrote these books. Plus, Ridges' insights make it a lot easier to "liken the scriptures" to ourselves. We use Ridges' commentaries every day in our scripture study. I have the Kindle and print versions. I turn on the Kindle text-to-speech, and we follow along silently in our books or on the Kindle screen as the voice reads to us. We can pause any time for discussion and then resume listening. A great way to study. My only suggestion is that on the next printing, the layout be slightly modified to offset long quotations (such as other scriptures) in a box, or italicize them so that it's easier to tell what is the main text. --Amazon In our busy world we sometimes find our scripture study isn't always productive. The solution is here with The Book of Mormon Made Easier Series--Parts 1, 2 and 3! Along with the complete text of the Book of Mormon, this valuable study guide includes in-the-verse notes and additional insights and commentary. A perfect study companion! David J. Ridges has been teaching in the Church Educational System for 30 years and has been associate director and instructor at Orem Institute of Religion adjacent to Utah Valley State College. He has taught for several years at BYU Campus Education Week and Know Your Religion programs. He has also served as a curriculum writer for Sunday School and Seminary manuals. Read more

"I'd never thought of that!!!"

I am constantly thinking "I had never thought of that!" on most every page. The depth of this book has me craving more. I will be buying all of David J. Ridges "made Easier" series as I work my way through the scriptures again. THis is a must have in your library. I especially reccommend it for converts!!

Very informative

Taught as if the reader knows nothing so it's great - especially reading it more than once. You don't have to have the scriptures with you while you read but you can if you want to transfer information you learn to your scriptures. Good teaching tool.

Family Scripture study will never be the same again!

I've been reading the Book of Mormon over and over again with my now 7 children for 11 years. I discovered Brother Ridges books when I started teaching the Old Testament gospel doctrine class. I was having so many epiphanies as I studied I decided to order this book for my family devotional. I didn't start at the beginning because we were already in 2nd Nephi trudging thru some of the most difficult chapters for me which quote chapters from Isaiah. My whole life I would just try to get thru those chapters as fast as I could because I couldn't understand them. But now, reading it, with Brother Ridges explaining it the whole way thru, I'm understanding it!!! My kids are understanding it and I find myself looking forward to what we're going to read and learn the next day. Thank you for writing your books. They are deepening my love for the scriptures. I want my children to feel that way too.

Great study guide!

I loved this book! It is just like taking a class on the scriptures, but in the comfort of your own home and at your own pace. He brings up discussions I hadn't even thought of, and explains things so clearly. I also have the Old testament versions and loved them also, I'm sure I will get the rest of his books. Wonderful insight into the scriptures. It has increased my knowledge of them greatly.

Great inside teachings and notes

Maybe if I "looked inside" or read some more reviews I would have found out that this is pretty much "The Book of Mormon" with some side notes in it. Which I REALLY like but I feel like I don't need to get out my scriptures due to they are all written down in this book, so writing notes is kinda odd for me---do I write them in the book or do I write them in my scriptures... Will buy the others and am very happy.

A Great Resource

This book is an excellent resource for gaining a greater understanding of the Book of Mormon. The author quotes from Christian scholars, prophets, and Church manuals to help the reader. Many verses took on an entirely different meaning from what I'd always believed. I found it especially helpful for those chapters from Isaiah that are quoted in 2nd Nephi. This would be a wonderful guide to anyone teaching the Book of Mormon.

My only criticism--and the reason I didn't give the book five stars--is that the author, David J. Ridges, finds it necessary to explain the most basic things. For example, he feels the need to point out that "the sayings of our fathers" refers to our ancestors. Is anyone reading this book so clueless as to not already know this? This sort of thing appears throughout the book.

Nonetheless, this is a valuable tool for anyone who wishes to know more about the wondrous Book of Mormon.

No No No!

These books are what's wrong with the LDS book market.
1) Mr. Ridges is making a ridiculous amount of money by publishing thousands of pages, only a small percentage of which are his own words. He is basically reprinting the Scriptures and making a boatload of money on it.
2) His commentary adds very little understanding to the Scriptures. It seems that he cleared out his seminary files and dumped them into a Word processor. His reprinted Scriptures are peppered with occasional quotes from prophets or brief, obvious observations that any thinking, retired LDS person could mimic. Making the Scriptures "easier" is the problem. God expects us to seek and study and feast and stretch ourselves, NOT seek for easy simplistic interpretations. These are fine for freshman seminary students, but not lifelong adult members of the Church.
3) What are his qualifications to teach the Scriptures to others? I'm not sure because his bio page mentions that he's taught teenagers for two decades and has been a bishop and stake president. I'm not sure how any of that is relevant to Scriptural interpretation. What does being a bishop have to do with these books? That's priest craft--using one's unrelated religious position to claim qualifications to guide people in understanding the Scriptures while making lots of money. Has he studied American religious history or Mormon history at the graduate level? Has he studied Hebrew, Greek, biblical cultures, etc.? In an age when simplistic and dumbed-down interpretations of the Scriptures are not helping people stay in the Church (in fact they are contributing to the widespread faith crisis in the Church), we need to abandon these silly books and read the serious work being done by the Church History Department scholars in Salt Lake City (including the Joseph Smith Papers Project scholars) and the trained LDS biblical scholars who are doing solid work on the Scriptures.
