Description

Interwoven with rich case studies from Paula’s counseling practice, Your Rainforest Mind will be earmarked and tear-stained. Prepare to lose your first copy to your best friend. ~Linda Silverman, Director of Gifted Development Center and author of "Giftedness 101" The rainforest is Paula Prober’s fresh and apt metaphor for the abundant internal ecosystem of the gifted child or adult. Like tropical forests around the world, the gifted are both fragile and powerful, surrounded by threats but full of world-changing potential. Prober does not settle for shallow or simplistic answers; she explores and finds inspiration in places that other researchers and practitioners haven’t considered. Drawing on examples from her clinical practice, she presents straightforward strategies for encouraging not just accomplishment, but also the capacity for happiness and fulfillment. The result is an intensely readable and useful book that will resonate with anyone concerned with understanding and nurturing the extraordinary abundance within ourselves and the gifted people in our lives. ~Tom Clynes, author of "The Boy Who Played with Fusion" Paula Prober, M.S., M.Ed. is a licensed counselor and consultant in private practice in Eugene, Oregon. Over the 30+ years she has worked with the gifted, she has been a teacher, consultant, adjunct instructor with the University of Oregon, and a guest presenter at Pacific University and Oregon State University. She has taught sessions on gifted adults and on parenting gifted children at conferences and webinars. Presently, she is counseling gifted adults in Oregon and consulting with parents of gifted children and gifted adults internationally. She has written articles on giftedness for the Eugene Register-Guard , the Psychotherapy Networker, Advanced Development Journal and the Annals of the American Psychotherapy Association . She blogs about gifted adults and parenting gifted children at rainforestmind.com.

This book has been a catalyst for a deeper knowing of my true self...

Like several others here, I found this book to be life-changing. Every person described in this book gave me deeper insight into my own identities and struggles.

I have always felt like a person on the fringe - deeply attuned to the world around me, in awe of beauty in all its forms, and empathetic to a degree that can sometimes feel debilitating. I’ve misunderstood my own intrinsic perfectionism, often pushed away my interests and abilities to fit in, and questioned why it seemed like no one else was seeing what I was. All of these things are addressed in this book.

Reading Your Rainforest Mind is like a walk through a gallery of portraits. Each profile beautifully lit with love and care to show the readers how glorious it is to be just as we are.

If you are highly, exceptionally, or profoundly gifted, you will undoubtedly find examples of abilities and struggles not often discussed elsewhere. Spiritual intelligence and intuitive knowing can be gifts as well as intellectual skills.

I see this book as a beacon to those who are ready to expand into a deeper knowing of themselves, as a portal to liberating the gifts of those with rainforest minds so we can self-actualize - become whole - awaken to the truth of who we are.

Its a great resource for practitioners as well as adults and children ...

As a healthcare practitioner (acupuncture with an integrative body-mind focus) I really appreciate Paula's book. It helps me identify gifted intelligence signs in my clients and re-frame their issues in that light. Paula's metaphor of rainforest mind also helps me see how so many people who may not have thought of themselves or their issues as evidence of creative intelligence, can take a new look. Paula's book is so full of healing suggestioins and links that it is an entire course on the subject. Its a great resource for practitioners as well as adults and children with gifted intelligence. Thanks Paula.

An unintimidating starting point

I didn't read this book exactly for my enjoyment or for review purposes. It was recommended to me a by a health professional after telling me what the hell was my problem.

I chose it because of the title that reflected my "condition" more accurately than the term "gifted" which I don't feel reflects my reality at all. I found it was very confronting, like Paula Prober could read into my mind and voiced questions I had always kept to myself and never put into words before. It's written with great empathy and helped me understand my situation better than whatever I could find online.

It loses a little bit of steam along the way, though as there's a lot of "you're smarter than everybody else, you just have to cope with it", which I feel is a cop out to how complicated it really is. I feel like I'm in a Lamborghini right now. I can't go faster than everybody else if I can't operate it. I found very little use to her coping strategies, too. I'm 36. I already have my own. There's even a poem at the end? A lot of answers were provided and a lot of dead end were hit. I highly suggest it if you've just been diagnosed and wonder what the hell is wrong with you. Moving on.

it uses little or no jargon and offers a good balance of analysis and guidelines

Thank you Mrs Prober for this very enlightening book.
After having read so many "medical" books to address the issue, this book came as a short, compact breath of fresh air.
Kind of a large introduction to the matter, it uses little or no jargon and offers a good balance of analysis and guidelines, without drowning the reader in too many testimonies from patients.
Heavily recommended for gifted people or those who want to understand their gifted partners, friends or relatives.
