WOMAN NINETY-NINE is richly and expertly woven with chilling historical details – you won’t soon forget what it was like to be behind the locked doors of Goldengrove Asylum on a mission to save someone you love." ― Susan Meissner, bestselling author of AS BRIGHT AS HEAVEN "Mccallister’s mastery of historical fiction is on full display in WOMAN NINETY NINE. Her incisive voice brings a dark chapter of our past to life with unsettling contemporary resonance." ― Julia Whelan, award-winning audiobook narrator and author of MY OXFORD YEAR "As she did in Girl in Disguise, Macallister honors the brave women of history and spins a fine tale that will sweep readers away to another time. This work of historical fiction is a perfect reminder that women will not be silenced." ― Pamela Klinger-Horn, Excelsior Bay Books (Excelsior, MN) "A true page-turner from beginning to end with a very satisfying ending." ― Carrie Deming, The Dog Eared Book (Palmyra, NY) "Macallister sensitively and adroitly portrays mental illness in an era when it was just beginning to be understood, while weaving a riveting tale of loyalty, love, and sacrifice." ― Publishers Weekly "This is an insightful look inside a mental institution at a time when women were pretty much powerless. But are these women really ill or are they just rebels? It’s a great read and deserves consideration by book clubs." ― Linda Bond, Auntie's Bookstore (Spokane, WA) "Exploring sisterhood, trauma, and the power of shared experience, Woman 99 is an undercover glimpse inside a late nineteenth-century treatment facility. Riveting

This is an amazing Historical Fiction novel with suspense. It showcases the unconditional love between two sisters during a time that woman had little rights. They were locked up in asylums simply for convenience if they were too outspoken, didn't obey their parents or husband, or *gasp* loved another woman. The supporting characters in this book were just as vibrant and loveable as the main protagonist which added a warmth to the cold and unsettling institute. The camaraderie between the patients gave the characters strength to survive the inhumane treatments they sometimes had to endure.

The story itself was a little slow but immersive. The author did a wonderful job establishing the setting of the asylum and the gradual change in Charlotte from quiet and obedient to fierce and outspoken. I enjoyed watching her evolve through the story and bravely face what was ahead.

If you enjoy historical fiction or women's fiction with women rising up against a patriarchal society then you will enjoy this one!

Engrossing...

I love historical fiction based on true events, and Woman 99 met that need. Many times, I thought, how really terrible it was during this era for parents to just dispose of children and grown women that made a mistake, had behaviors that they didn’t like or couldn’t control - in so-called “rest homes” for the mentally disturbed. It was doubtful that those who truly needed help got it - and many were perfectly sane, but had been an embarrassment to an aristocratic family. In Woman 99, a younger daughter is distressed that her older sister has been placed in such a place - and decides to get herself into the rest home to rescue her. Getting in was fairly easy - getting out with her sister is altogether different!
It would spoil the story to go any further. I stayed up several late nights because I just couldn’t put the book down! This was a fast read - an exceptionally good one - and a learning experience at the same time. San Francisco is the setting - the characters are unforgettable, and the pace is riveting. Great choice!

dark subject matter

I very much enjoy historical fiction but this was not as enjoyable as other novels I have read. Did not finish it in fact....
Magdalene Laundries could, in fact, be a riveting topic in the right hands . So, it is not necesssarily the topic that renders it less than engaging.
