Description

"As with any DeWees book, you are treated to beautifully written prose, excellent plotting and great characterization . . . . There's a curse at work here, all right. The kind that makes a book impossible to put down." --Miss Ruby Jones, Sweet Rocket"Ms. DeWees has woven her words with such beauty as to almost seem poetic at times .xa0 The characters are developed with a depth and understanding that allows readers to become a part of the very story themselves. . . . [A] feast for the eye and a joy to devour!" --Ruth Lynn Ritter, InD'Tale magazine (InDTale.com) I grew up loving the traditional gothic romances of Victoria Holt and Daphne du Maurier, as well as the Victorian romantic suspense novels of Barbara Michaels... and of course their prototype, Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre. The combination of romance, mystery, sinister atmosphere, and (often) a fascinating historical setting addicted me. At the same time, there's a kind of innocence to them, perhaps a throwback to the "Beauty and the Beast" fairy tale, which seems to echo through the classic gothic romance plot. If you enjoy the suspense and romantic sweep of gothic novels--or if you're looking for a sweet historical romance that you won't have to hide when your kids (or parents) walk into the room-- With This Curse may be just the book you'll enjoy curling up with on a rainy afternoon or chilly evening!

Features & Highlights

  • Can a curse strike twice in a woman’s life?In 1854, seventeen-year-old chambermaid Clara Crofton was dismissed from Gravesend Hall for having fallen in love with Richard Blackwood, the younger son of the house. Alone in the world, Clara found a tenuous position as a seamstress, but she always blamed the Gravesend curse for the disaster that had befallen her--and for Richard’s death soon after in the Crimean War.Now, more than eighteen years later, Richard’s twin, Atticus, seeks out Clara with a strange proposal: if she will marry him and live with him as his wife in name only to ease the mind of his dying father, Atticus will then endow her with a comfortable income for the rest of her life. Clara knows that he is not disclosing his true motives, but when she runs out of options for an independent life, she has no choice but to become Atticus’s wife. For Clara, returning to Gravesend as a bride brings some triumph... but also great unease. Not only must she pretend to be a wellborn lady and devoted wife to a man whose face is a constant reminder of the love she lost, but ominous portents whisper that her masquerade brings grave danger. “This house will take from you what you most treasure,” her mother once warned her. But the curse has already taken the man Clara loved. Will it now demand her life?Readers who enjoyed DeWees’s award-winning sweet historical gothic romance Sea of Secrets, as well as those who love traditional gothic romance and clean historical romance alike, will be captivated by this strong yet vulnerable new heroine and her suspenseful journey through the perils of heartbreak, danger, and love.Length: about 102,000 words ~ Sensuality level: sweet/mild/kissesIncludes book club discussion questionsCategories: clean historical romance, gothic romance fiction, historical gothic romance, romantic suspense fiction, sweet historical romance, traditional gothic romance, Victorian historical romanceFrom the author: I grew up loving the traditional gothic romances of Victoria Holt, Mary Stewart, Daphne du Maurier, and Barbara Michaels... and of course their classic Victorian prototype, Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre. Amanda has done it again. Brilliantly written.

To start with wasn’t sure if the book was going to my kind of read dealing with the time period of the book but really enjoyed it.
I’m not into re-telling stories so this is what i honestly thought of the book.
I felt sorry for Clara she lost so much at a young ish age; being sent away from her mother was hard on her. She managed to find her way through the years. Until she was approach with a proposal that would sure set her up for life, only downside she had to marry and return to where she lost her heart.
I loved the tear in her heart slowly repair until she almost lost it all again. Clara is strong willed and doesn’t let anything pull her down and scare her away even in the most difficult circumstances she finds herself in, one of these being the love triangle between her husband and his dead brother.

Fantastic and Riveting!

Ms. DeWees has woven yet another tale that draws you in, pulling you further and further until you can no longer put the book down no matter the hour. I was seething with frustration during the last chapters that I simply could not read any faster, so anxious was I to discover the resolution to the tale. And yet I did not want it to be over just yet. The rich descriptions and brilliant characterization made every page an intrigue, and the slow blossom of detail formed a perfect build to the climax of the story that literally had me pacing across the room as I read. The plot is well-formed and richly thought out, so much so that it only seems you could make a stab at the ending until a twist surprises you and shows you at the same time that it could never be anything else. Clara has a sharp wit and a humble wisdom that makes her charming in her triumphs and her foibles, and Atticus is such the gentleman-- in both perfection and flaw-- that he makes you wish he'd jump off the page into the room next to you and ask you to play cards with a gleam to his eye. With This Curse brings a true gem to the gothic-romance genre that should not be missed, and I look with great excitement for Ms. DeWees's next volume.

Amazing Historical

Gravesend is a rather large estate that has cursed the family that lives there. Clara, a young girl whose mother works as a maid, meets her dream man, Richard, or so she thinks. After being sent away she learns of Richards death and agrees to marry his brother Atticus. Not everything turns out as planned, and the ending will suprise you. This is a great historical romance with a mysterious background. I love the author's writing style, you quickly fall into the story and feel like you know the characters.
