Description

“A perfect formula thriller, only Westlake yanks the formula inside out!” — Newsweek “I found myself racing along with pleasure and gratitude.” — New York Times “[Westlake’s] most durable character. ... Whatever can go wrong in the man’s elaborate attempts at larceny invariably does, and in the most amusing and unexpected ways possible.” — Los Angeles Times Donald E. Westlake (1933–2008) was one of the most prolific and talented authors of American crime fiction. He began his career in the late 1950s, churning out novels for pulp houses—often writing as many as four novels a year under various pseudonyms—but soon began publishing under his own name. His most well known characters were John Dortmunder, an unlucky thief, and a ruthless criminal named Parker. His writing earned him three Edgars and a Grand Master Award from the Mystery Writers of America.xa0Westlake’s cinematic prose and brisk dialogue made his novels attractive to Hollywood, and several motion pictures were made from them, with stars such as Lee Marvin and Mel Gibson. Westlake wrote several screenplays himself, receiving an Academy Award nomination for his adaptation of The Grifters , Jim Thompson’s noir classic.

Features & Highlights

  • Be careful what you steal . . . A fast-paced crime caper from the Edgar Award–winning author and “funniest man in the world” (
  • The Washington Post Book World
  • ).
  • The Byzantine Fire is much more than a ninety-carat ruby. As a stone it’s worth over a million dollars, a value vastly increased by its pure gold band—but its history makes it priceless. A ring that has been fought for with sword and pen, and passed from nation to nation by all manner of theft and trickery, it finally made its way to the United States. The US has agreed to return it to Turkey, but it’s about to be stolen twice more. A gang of Greeks armed with Sten guns burst into the security room at JFK Airport and escape with the priceless stone, which they deposit in the safe at a small jeweler’s shop in Queens. A few hours later, unlucky thief John Dortmunder, expecting a routine robbery, steals it again. Much blood has been shed for this little ruby, and Dortmunder’s could be next.

Dortmunder's Biggest Score Yet...... But.........

Dortmunder accidentally makes the biggest score of his career, then his only problem is getting rid of the loot.
Dortmunder steals a rare ruby The Byzantine Fire by mistake. Everyone is then after him, police FBI, all the other crooks in the city who make a deal with the cops to return the stone in exchange for the heat being taken off them, Turkish terrorists etc etc. He can't sell the ruby but has to get rid of it.

This book was almost all about Dortmunder and Andy Kelp. Most of the other regular characters only make a bit appearance. There are some new interesting characters in the police department and FBI who add a lot of humor to the story.

Pretty good although I missed Stan Murch's driving talents in this one. If your a fan of the series you will like it but It would not be a good place to start if you are new to the Dortmunder books. They are all pretty much stand alone, but this is not one of the better ones. Start with the the first one 'The Hot Rock'.

A funny crime farce

I love Westlake's Dortmunder novels- he's such an unprepossessing protagonist, and inadvertently gets into such complicated messs.

Westlake has a lot of sly asides here, some of which made me literally giggle... not to mention the whole comic plot!

Dortmunder, a professional thief, finds a jewelry store with a sign on the window saying that the owner is on vacation... what could possibly go wrong??!

Recommended if you like the absurd.

Junk Jewelery

What happens when a jeweler posts a sign 'Going on Vacation'? A small time thief makes off with what appeared to be junk but turned out to be a masterpiece. What to do becomes the theme of Mr. Westlakes novel. Fun reading almost like a movie script when the local cops, feds, international factions, and even your neighborhood wise guys all come after you. How would you rectify the mistake?

An outstanding book!

What a wonderful story! In my experience it is very rare to find a story full of such levity.
There are lots of of twists and turns in the plot. It is full of totally unexpected events and wonderful characters, plus Donald Westlake's unparalleled mastery when describing the various parts of New York city.

Another brilliant Dortmunder caper

I love all the Dortmunder novels, which I'm reading in order. Donald Westlake is a really fine writer, subtly hilarious, deftly limning his characters, crafting a riveting story that does not rely on graphic violence or explicit sex. John Dortmunder, the title character, is a small-time thief, taciturn, jinxed, usually depressed, and somehow totally engaging -- unsettlingly so. Because of the popular genre, Westlake is underrated by the "literary" reviewers who would do well to gain a "C" on a grading curve involving Westlake. This series always makes me laugh out loud -- a very rare and welcome experience. Once I start a Dortmunder book, I can't put it down, even though I know the end is typically the same -- crime doesn't pay well, if at all. But it's funny and recognizably human on the way to the caper's conclusion.

Dortmunder puts his foot in it again. Great laughs

I love all of Donald Westlake's John Dortmunder novels, and this is one of his best. Very funny, bumbling yet ingenious burglar who gets into impossible binds and somehow manage to extricate himself each time. No violence.
