Description

From Booklist After the heartbreak of losing her first husband, Daphne is ready to marry practical Stephen. But she cannot move forward without looking back, and she feels compelled to move the wedding to tiny Erikousa, Greece, where Daphne spent every childhood summer with her beloved Yia Yia. As Daphne regains the inner peace she felt swimming in the Ionian Sea and eating Yia Yia’s traditional food, her shy five-year-old daughter, Evie, opens up and thrives among the boisterous neighbors and feral cats. The one dark spot is the fisherman, Yianni, who is cold to Daphne (and vice versa) but dedicated to Yia Yia. Daphne learns the history of the deep connection between the surly fisherman and her grandmother. She also learns to open herself up to the voices of the cypress trees. Though Daphne’s journey is the emotional center of the book, the real star is the island of Erikousa, from the sun-baked patios to the spitting widows who meet every ferry. There is just enough humor to balance the heartache, and a dash of history adds depth. Readers will be transported. --Susan Maguire --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition. On a beautiful Greek island, myths, magic, and a colorful cast of mortals come together in a lushly atmospheric debut celebrating the powerful bond between an American woman and her Greek grandmother. The daughter of Greek immigrants, Daphne was brought up to believe in the American dream, but hers is shattered when her husband dies in a car accident. After his death, she channels everything she has into rebuilding her life as an acclaimed chef and restaurateur. She has also found a second chance at love with her wealthy, handsome fiancé. Although American by birth, Daphne spent many blissful childhood summers on the magical Greek island of Erikousa, which her grandmother still calls home. Now, as her wedding day fast approaches, Daphne returns to Erikousa and to Yia-yia's embrace. As they spend time together, her grandmother opens up to share remarkable memories of her life there—including stories of bravery and loyalty in the face of death during World War II. Yia-yia has more than one lesson to teach Daphne: that security is not the same as love, that her life can be filled with meaning again, and that the most important magic to believe in is the magic of herself. --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition. Nice light story with fabulous description

When the Cypress Whispers by Yvette Manessis Corporon is a novel situated in one of the most beautiful places on Earth: a small Greek island. I just love Greece, and the book described some amazing scenery which really brought me back to the vacation my husband and I took a few years ago.

In When the Cypress Whispers Daphne lost the love of her life Alex in a tragic accident. It’s been years, and she and her daughter Evie have since moved on. Daphne will soon marry Stephen, who is wealthy and has helped Daphne create her dream of owning a successful restaurant in NYC. When Daphne takes Evie to the Greek isle of Erikousa before the wedding (which will be on the island later), Evie and Daphne fall back in love with this amazing place.

At the same time, Daphne finds out that her grandmother, Yia-yia, is hiding a secret. An amazing secret that makes Daphne question herself and the life she has made.

I really really wanted more of the historical fiction part of the book. It was such a tiny piece, and I think that with more of that historical fiction, which was on the island during WWII, the book would have been a great read. It felt too glossed over for me, and left me wanting more, but not in the best way.

For me, the book was a little too light, too much of a predictable story.

Who is this book for? Someone who enjoys lighter women’s fiction with a touch of unknown history thrown in.

Have you ever been to Greece?

Thanks for reading,

It Was Greek To Me

Daphne mou and yia-yia on the island of Corfu. Daphne came home to her Greek island and grandmother for her wedding. Within this story there is a lot of Greek mythology, a bit about WWII and what the Greek Jewish population suffered as well as the main protagonist rethinking her life in America. The book was touching, dramatic as you get a feel for life on a small Greek island and the people who have lived there all their lives. Their beliefs and superstitions all tied into one and woven like a tapestry into their lives. As Daphne comes back to the island to celebrate her wedding, she now sees it with different eyes and through the eyes of her yia-yia. An enjoyable read!

Greek Culture, Myths, Food, and History Plus Romance All Combined in One Novel

I am an avid reader of fiction and a published Author. I recommend “When the Cypress Whispers” to any reader who would like to relax with an intriguing story about a small Greek village with an array of interesting characters blended into a captivating plot. Yvette has used her Greek heritage, and considerable talent, to make us feel at home on the island of Erikousa. The author describes the landscape and Greek cuisine in such vivid detail to make the reader want to visit and taste. Daphne’s Yia-yea, epitomizes the classic wise, old Greek grandmother while Popi is the liberated, fun-loving, young character. Everyone will love Evie, Daphne’s “bubbly” little girl as she is introduced to her mother’s “other world.” The two men in Daphene’s life, Stephen and Yianni, reflect their diverse background and “life experiences.” Steven, is just a hard-charging, successful men who, like many such men, strives to balance work and romance in their life. Yianni, on the other hand, is a “mystery man” in Yvette’s story; the reader gets to know, and appreciate, him only later in the drama-for now, suffice it to say, Yianni is more than an island fisherman. If the reader expects a classic ending in this love story, “forget it.” I fully expect this book to garner literary awards and to vie for a place on the list of best books in 2014.

Absolutely Wonderful Story, Great Storytelling

"When the Cypress Whispers" by Yvette Manessis Corporon 5-stars

Wow! This is one of those novels that I want to rant and rave about, and try to tell everyone to read it, that they'll enjoy it, they'll love it as much as I did. Wow! Great story, great storytelling.

Not to take anything away from the story, but if I could have, I would have asked her to change the very end of the ending. It was a good ending, don't get me wrong. I just wanted it to end "my way", that's all.

This novel deserves to be read and appreciated by everyone, and I sincerely hope they do. If you read it, you'll love it, I can almost guarantee it.

A charming tale of choices that lead to a life well lived...

Daphne loved her idyllic childhood summers spent on Erikousa with her grandmother from whom she learned not only about Greek legends and traditions, but also acquired excellent culinary skills in preparing Greek cuisine which she used to open a very successful restaurant in New York City. A widow of five years, she is engaged to a man who she believes will fulfill her heart's desires until she travels with her young daughter, Evie, to prepare for the wedding on Erikousa. Here, she once again experiences the peaceful, simple island life and begins to question not only what really comprises a life well lived, but also what choices and actions lend authenticity and dignity to that life. You will be enchanted by the magic of the island and the relationship of Daphne and her grandmother. Pack your suitcase and have it ready by the door because when you read this novel, you will want to travel to the Greek island, Erikousa, and stay awhile at the small hotel in the hopes of meeting some of the other memorable characters in this charming tale.

Disappointing

Very disappointed. More a Mills & Boon type romance , (knew the end from the beginning! ), than the novel I expected.
Would not recommend this book

Family is where it's at.....

When I can get wrapped up in just about any character in a book, I'm sold on it.
I love reading about relationships and past history in our lives and maybe why we are the way we are.
We don't leave our past behind. We bring it right along with us and it forms who we've really become.
I've had people tell me to leave the past behind. It's done. It's over. This is now.
Sounds maybe easy to do, but I find it impossible to do.

I found this story wonderful. We think we have our lives all planned out and then something happens
to turn our heads and make us think about what we're doing and if it is really the best thing for all
concerned.

The ending is not totally tied up with a neat string, but I'd like to think .......
