Description

"Allison's infectious enthusiasm for both the African bush and his job showing its wonders to tourists is readily apparent." -- Booklist "His misadventures make Whatever You Do, Don't Run an absorbing read. . . . The material is rich, and Allison is a gifted storyteller. And the only thing stranger than African fiction is African truth." -- National Geographic Adventure "After reading this entrancing memoir, an African safari may move to No. 1 on your travel wish list. The only catch is you'll want the author as your guide." -- Chicago Sun-Times Welcome to the African bush, where the animals are fierce, the tourists can be wild, andxa0only the food runs! Whatever You Do, Don’t Run is a hilarious collection of true tales from top xadsafari guide Peter Allison. In a place where the wrong behavior could get you eaten, Allison has survived face-to-face encounters with big cats, angry xadelephants, and the world’s most unpredictable animals—herds of untamed tourists and foolhardy guides whose outrageous antics sometimes make them even more dangerous than a pride of hungry lions!Join Allison as he faces down charging lions—twice; searches for a drunk, half-naked tourist who happens to be a member of the British royal family; drives a Land Rover full of tourists into a lagoon full of hippos; and adopts the most xadvicious animal in Africa as his “pet.” Full of lively humor and a genuine love and respect for Botswana and its rich wildlife, Whatever You Do, Don’t Run takes you to where the wild things are and introduces you to a place where every day is a new adventure! With a new introduction and new material from the authorNew story: People often ask safari guides about the experience that frightened them the most. In this story Peter Allison tells of the time he became aware of unseen danger, and knew that somewhere within meters of him was a hunting lioness. Peter Allison is a safari guide who has spent much of the last twelve years leading wildlife-viewing and ecotourism trips in Africa, mostly Botswana. Born and raised in Sydney, Australia, he has a self-deprecating sense of humor that makes him an ideal narrator for a book about the challenges and elusive joys of dealing with tourists in the African bush. His love of animals led him to train as a safari guide in the early 1990s, and soon thereafter he was hired by southern Africa's largest operator to train all of their safari experts. Safaris he has led have been featured in magazines such as Vogue and Conde Nast Traveler (which described him as "silver tongued"). He has assisted National Geographic photographers and appeared on television shows such as Jack Hanna's Animal Adventures . For most of his safari career he has been based at a camp in Botswana called Mombo, which is situated on an oasis in the middle of the Kalahari Desert. Hunters and poachers cannot venture on the island, and tourism is limited to the small camp.Despite having lived in a tent for more than a decade, Peter is a confident public speaker. In Sydney he presents seminars to the business community on animal behavior and its relation to competitive human behavior and power games.Peter is also active with the Athena Foundation, a nonprofit conservation group. He is on the board of the Athena Foundation’s youth program, whose mission is to inspire young people to develop their interest in conservation.xa0He currently divides his time between Australia, California, and Botswana. The local Batswana dubbed him “The Sexually Frustrated Elephant.” The origin of this epithet is explained in the book. Read more

Features & Highlights

  • A hilarious, highly original collection of essays based on the Botswana truism: “only food runs!”
  • With a new introduction and new material from the author
  • In the tradition of Bill Bryson, a new writer brings us the lively adventures and biting wit of an African safari guide. Peter Allison gives us the guide’s-eye view of living in the bush, confronting the world’s fiercest terrain of wild animals and, most challenging of all, managing herds of gaping tourists. Passionate for the animals of the Kalahari, Allison works as a top safari guide in the wildlife-rich Okavango Delta. As he serves the whims of his wealthy clients, he often has to stop the impulse to run as far away from them as he can, as these tourists are sometimes more dangerous than a pride of lions. No one could make up these outrageous-but-true tales: the young woman who rejected the recommended safari-friendly khaki to wear a more “fashionable” hot pink ensemble; the lost tourist who happened to be drunk, half-naked, and a member of the British royal family; establishing a real friendship with the continent’s most vicious animal; the Japanese tourist who requested a repeat performance of Allison’s being charged by a lion so he could videotape it; and spending a crazy night in the wild after blowing a tire on a tour bus, revealing that Allison has as much good-natured scorn for himself. The author’s humor is exceeded only by his love and respect for the animals, and his goal is to limit any negative exposure to humans by planning trips that are minimally invasive—unfortunately it doesn’t always work out that way!New story: People often ask safari guides about the experience that frightened them the most. Big Liar Or Bigger Fool?

Just finished reading a copy of ".... True Tales Of A Botswana Safari Guide" that I picked up at a used book store. Over the last 12 years, I've gone on 6 Botswana safaris with several different guides... Anglo and Native. None were as "daring" (reckless) as Peter claims to be, and none would think of putting their clients in harms way.

I'm glad I didn't read Peter's account before going on safari, or I never would have gone. He seem to be hell-bent on making a Botswana safari sound as scary and dangerous as possible. Yes, it's not a zoo and the animals are not tame. However, if basic rules are observed, and the direction of the safari guide is followed, it's a fantastic life-changing experience.

All the time I've spent in Botswana, I've never seen anyone trampled by an elephant, mauled by a lion or an invasion of rats.... like Peter would have readers believe is an everyday occurrence. If such were the case, my wife who had to be coerced into going on her first Botswana safari, wouldn't be anxious to return for her 4th safari later this year.

Please skip reading this book, and sign up for a first-hand and honest Botswana safari experience.

Entertaining Read

I love this book. Someone loaned it to me to read before I went on my first safari and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The stories were astounding and often hilarious, if only for the naiveté of the writer, which he often acknowledges. His second book was also good, although this one was a bit better. I liked it so much I got it for my friends to read and pass on before our upcoming safari.

Really fun reading!

Having been to Botswana on a safari, I was intrigued to learn about this guide's adventures. Makes me want to return very soon! He was a little cavalier about some of the dangers, but I guess that's indicative of his age and gender? Great to learn about the "personalities" of some of the animals he spent time with. Such amazing creatures!
