Description

“Strong local color, convincing characters, and a twisty plot make this a standout. This is Swedish noir at its murky best.” — Publishers Weekly , starred review “This is a world-class Scandinavian mystery, one that will be mentioned in the same breath with Smilla’s Sense of Snow , The Redbreast or the Milennium trilogy…. I predict that it will be one of the most talked-about suspense novels of the year.”xa0 — BookPage , starred review “Compelling and expertly constructed.” — Booklist “Alsterdal plots enough twists to keep the police procedural interesting and writes a great woman protagonist; fans of international mystery will be happy to discover her.” — Library Journal “A cat-and-mouse game that promises to be full of surprises, as well as thoughtful considerations of grief, guilt, and memory.” — LitHub’s Crimereads “Among today’s abundant crime novels, it’s rare to find one that demands a second reading for its language and insight. We Know You Remember is one of that small group.” — New York Journal of Books “Among today’s abundant crime novels, it’s rare to find one that demands a second reading for its language and insight. We Know You Remember is one of that small group, and more American appearances of Tove Alsterdal’s other titles are well worth looking forward to.” — New York Review of Books “Riveting. . . . The plot structure of this memorable work is brilliantly conceived and executed, and the development of an array of fascinating characters is impressive. As a matter of fact, it is as much a profound psychological study as it is a clever police procedural . . . A superb procedural and an acutely revelatory reading experience.”xa0 — Bookreporter “A beautiful and atmospheric novel with an interesting plot and a very likeable detective, that I really look forward to meet again.” — Nordic Noir “The prose is methodical and gritty, the characters are diligent, troubled, relentless, and multilayered, and the plot is anxa0ominous tale full of twists, turns, secrets, red herrings, deception, manipulation, desperation, deduction, mayhem, violence, and murder. We Know You Remember isxa0an unsettling, atmospheric, taut whodunit by Alsterdal that has all the qualities you look for in a Swedish Noir novel and is a promising US debut for this new-to-me author.” — What's Better Than Books Blog “Beautifully elegiac and intricately plotted, this is Nordic noir at its best.” — People Magazine, Best Books of Fall Award Tove Alsterdal burst upon the Swedish book scene in 2009 with The Forgotten Dead and is the author of five critically acclaimed stand-alone novels. We Know You Remember , which was named Swedish Crime Novel of the Year and was shortlisted for the country’s Book of the Year Award, marks her American debut.

  • It’s been more than twenty years since Olof Hagström left home. Returning to his family’s house, he knows instantly that something is amiss. Memories of my childhood!

This is a wonderful book, well written and true. It takes place in the Höga Kusten area in Sweden (450 km north of Stockholm). I know area well as I grew up in the middle of it. All place names are correct and I can still picture all the villages that the detectives walk through. I cannot wait for the next book in this series.

Dark and twisted read

⚠️ Trigger Warning: Graphic Rape ⚠️

It’s been more than twenty years since Olof Hagstrom has left home. Upon returning, he knows that something isn’t quite right. Once inside he finds a panicked dog, water pooling on the floor and his father dead in the shower.

For police detective Eira Sjodin, this investigation brings up old memories of a well known closed case where fourteen year old Olof was found guilty of raping and murdering a local girl. Being too young to be sentenced, Olof was exiled from his family up until now. His return sets the town on edge and dredges up old memories of a case that may need to be reopened.

I love a good detective novel, I especially love when an old case begins to become connected to a new one. This story was woven together so well with such detail to the cases and such strong character development. This is a book you definitely need to take on by itself, for there are a lot of characters to remember and timelines of incidences that are important. I loved how Alsterdal intricately weaved multiple twists into this story making you always question what you know about the cases and the characters. The ending was awesome, I loved everything about it!! Originally published as Rutvalta in Sweden in 2020, this is the first in a series and I look forward to reading more!

Not a great translation

I read a lot of Scandinavian crime / thrillers / mysteries. This was not a good translation. Strange wording and phrasing in places, boring story, and just overall not interesting plot although it sounds promising in the synopsis. Gave up after a few chapter.
