Description

'A frank, endearing story of a respected apologist and evangelical statesman's life....[It] starkly contrasts the real implications of rejecting or accepting the lordship of Jesus. Nothing short of meaning in life is at stake, and Walking from East to West exposes the silliness of much popular religious pluralism by underscoring the gravity of worldview selection....This is storytelling in the fashion of C. S. Lewis: rational argumentation expressed in narrative.' -- Christianity Today

( Christianity Today ) x93Outside were stray animals and people, each about some pursuit. Sometimes it was a beggar at the door, sometimes a leprous hand reaching for a handout with a plea for compassion. Life with all its hurts and pains squinted at you, squatted before you, and stared you down daily. This was the street where I grew up.x94 Ravi Zacharias has lived an extraordinary life. He has walked with great leaders, slept in the villages and homes of the poor, and crossed continents to bring the good news of the gospel to the world. Already a man of two worlds by the time he was twenty, Ravi never dreamed that God would lead him from his birth home in India to Canada and the United States, and eventually to a platform on the world stage. For thirty-three years he has spoken all over the world. He has addressed writers of the peace accord in South Africa, the president's cabinet and parliament in Peru, and military officers at the Lenin Military Academy and the Center for Geopolitical Strategy in Moscow. He has given the keynote address at the National Day of Prayer in Washington, DC, and has spoken twice at the Annual Prayer Breakfast at the United Nations in New York. Walking from East to West is Ravi's life story, a deeply personal journey into his past. Dr. Zacharias invites you back to the southern India of his early childhood, and into his troubled youth in the sophisticated capital city of Delhi. He recalls the importance of a mother's love and his difficult relationship with his father. He tells about his long search for truth in wrestling with Eastern thought and the newer ideas of Christianity, the cry for help in a dark moment when he tried to take his own life--and the dramatic turning point that led to a life lived for Christ. Zacharias recalls his early days as a new convert, what it was like to find a new life in the Western world, and the eventual birth and growth of a worldwide ministry. This is a story about an amazing man. Yet it is also everyone's story about belief--how it begins, how it grows, and the struggles associated with it. Walking from East to West is a heartfelt personal story of one man's discovery that God is the author of our destinies, no matter how dark the shadows that hide the light. Ravi Zacharias is President and Founder of Ravi Zacharias International Ministries (RZIM). Their global outreach grew from humble roots in 1984 and includes fielding a team of itinerant speakers who operate from offices located around the world including the U.S., the UK, Romania, the Middle East, India, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Canada. The Hallmark of Ravi's heart is his strong evangelistic and apologetic that manifests itself from a position of compassion. Please send your comments about this book to us in care of [email protected]. Thank you. Preface Some books are difficult to write; others border on the almost impossible. This one is in the latter category. Many friends and even strangers over the years have asked if I would pen such a story, and when Zondervan asked me to write a book of my memoirs, I concluded that the time had come. The difficulty lies on many fronts. First is that of accurate recall. How does one piece together all of the past? How does one be truly objective when one's own feelings are locked in to the situation? Then arises a very personal matter. How do you tell a story of such intimate issues and not at the same time make someone else look unduly bad or good? That was the toughest challenge of all. It is one thing for an individual to disclose his or her own heart, but to do so for someone else runs an unfortunate risk. If I have erred here, I sincerely hope it is not because of any personal ill will but only because I know the story did not end as it had begun. As I struggled with these issues, the publisher agreed to have me tell the story to another writer, who would spend hours with me and others to cull the material and then write it in the way it unfolded. I took the narrative he penned and wrote the story line in my own words, along with his. Throughout this process, the publisher asked if I would keep it at a simple level of reach and not make it inaccessible in content and depth. The goal was simple: 'Tell us your story in the simplest terms with your heart on your sleeve.' I suppose being accustomed to writing on philosophical themes, this was a reminder to me as 'a word to the wise.' So that has been the approach. Much more could have been said and said at a lofty level portraying all my philosophical struggles and so on. But we avoided that. Maybe some instances in the narrative 12 preface need not have been shared, but were in order to show the backdrop of what was shaping me all along. What I do know is that as I retraced steps and memories, some of them were hard to relive, while others brought a renewed sense of happiness; some memories brought the depth of tears to the surface, and yet others brought to mind cherished moments long forgotten. I have concluded that it is an exercise that is well undertaken by everybody --- to journal and write down one's thoughts at shorter intervals. Memories are good reminders of what God has done and where we could have done better. I remember the time an older man asked me when I was young, 'Do you know what you are doing now?' I thought it was some kind of trick question. 'Tell me,' I said. 'You are building your memories,' he replied, 'so make them good ones.' If each reader would glean just that from the book, then it will have been worth it. But there is something greater here, and it is this: as life progresses, you wish there were some safeguards you had taken along the way, and even some different decisions you had made along the way. For one, I wish I had talked more to my parents about their past and about my ancestors. What did they know? What were the stories of their lives? What made each one the way they were? Now it is too late for that, for my parents have both passed away. I nevertheless come away with the absolute certainty that God has ordered my steps and that God was there, even in the darkest moments of my life. I know this as surely as I know I exist. He never abandoned me and has brought me by His grace and mercy this far. This is the most certain truth I possess, and it is truly liberating. One other great enrichment was to think back on my youth in India, even as now the West has become home. India gave me much that I can never repay. It really is an intriguing culture --- weaknesses and ironies notwithstanding. Now living first in Canada and then in America, these countries have become home. I am so grateful to God for the privilege of living here. Beyond my residences, the heart has found its home in my faith and love for Jesus Christ. I sincerely hope and pray that as you read these pages, you will feel Him near to you and that you will be guided by His wisdom and kept by His grace. Without Him, this story would not be worth telling or reading. Part 1 East Chapter 1 A Life Out of Nothing One of my earliest memories is of the old man on my street, a mystic who wore only a loincloth. He was tall, with matted hair and piercing eyes, quite fearsome to look at. Mud was caked all over his bony frame, his face was scarred by deep gashes that were self-inflicted from his religious devotion, and his skin was burned by constant exposure to the torrid heat of the midday sun. 'How did he come to look like this?' I wondered as a boy. 'What had he done to himself?' I found out soon enough. Two or three times each week he would appear on our street; then, almost like a coiled rope unwinding, he would lie down on that filthy road and begin his routine. Cow dung and dog droppings littered the path, to say nothing of the stones or sharp objects that cluttered it as well, yet he would roll down the length of the street with a howl that sounded as if it came from the depths of a cavern. 'Govinda! Govinda! Govinda!' I had no clue what his cry was about --- I only knew it terrified me. It was an astonishing sight to a five-year-old, and I recall scampering to my mother and asking her, 'What is he doing? What is he doing?' 'He's OK,' she replied. 'Just ignore him.' 'But what is he doing?' I would implore. 'Why is he doing it?' 'He's calling to his god!' she said. That did not quench my curiosity. But I did not pursue it as long as he continued to roll away from me, and his voice became a faint but haunting sound in the distance: 'Govinda!' Read more

Autobiography of a Canadian-Anglo-Indian

This autobiography of the world renowned apologetic-evangelist reads more like a memoir rather than an autobiography. This may be because it was written by Scott Sawyers rather than Ravi himself.

The book starts and ends with Ravi's home town in Chennai (Madras), India. He started his autobiography with his earliest religious memory of an encounter with an Indian mystic, one who rolled himself down his town's main street. The street was unpaved and was covered with dust and animal excreta. His reminiscent about his childhood in Chennai before they moved to Delhi.

A major portion of his childhood memories revolved around his father. His father was a government servant to rise up in ranks to become a high ranking officer in Delhi. For some reasons, he was very hard on Ravi compared with his brother and sisters. He had a very bad temper and would often beat up Ravi physically. Than and his verbal distain resulted in Ravi developing a very poor self image. He found it impossible to please his father.

That he wanted to was very obvious from his account. One of the causes for his punishment was his poor school performance. Ravi did not explain why he did so poorly in school and yet in later life he was able to excel in apologetics and philosophy. His devotion to his mother, a school teacher was obvious. Ravi wrote," I suppose I was afraid of losing her, as she was my only hope in a young life stalked by failure and haunted by shame." (p.61)

His only escape from this life of poor self-esteem, which he described as meaninglessness, is watching Hindi movies and sports, especially crickets. One day, he found life so unbearable that he decided to commit suicide. He was unsuccessful. During his convalescent he was given a bible by Fred David, one of the directors Youth for Christ (YFC) worker and told to read John 14:19 "Because I live, you will also live."

This marked a turning point in his life. He became involved with a bible study organized by Fred and gradually came to a personal encounter with Christ. About that time, he discovered that he wanted to study Hospitality at the University of Delhi. He found that he liked it and his grades began to improve. He was given opportunity to preach and won a youth preaching competition. This gave him courage to organize a preaching team to four cities in India and confirmed his evangelistic gifting.

It was about this time that his father grew near the retirement age for government servants (55 years old). His father was given an opportunity to migrate to Canada and they did. Ravi said that it was a sacrifice on his father's part for the sake of his children's future. Ravi found work in a hotel in Toronto and enjoyed it.

However he felt the call to seminary and left to study in Ontario Bible College. He was given an opportunity to preach on a mission trip to Vietnam in May, 1971 which defined the scope of his ministry. He discovered the empowerment of the Holy Spirit through his "persuasive preaching". On his return, he was sure that that was the direction he wanted to follow. He married Maggie Reynolds soon after his return after a courtship of 5 years.

On his graduation from Ontario Bible College, he went on to study at the Trinity Evangelical Divinity School on Deerfield, Illinois. Ravi was also invited to go on staff with the Christian and Missionary Alliance (C&MA) which in 1977 sent him to preach in various countries around the world. On his return he was offered and accepted a teaching position with a C&MA seminary on Evangelism. He soon discovered that teaching was not what he wanted.

It was around this time that he was involved with world evangelist conferences organized by Billy Graham. He began to discover that there is a need for a "cultural evangelist-apologist" (p.195). Most evangelists were not equipped to evangelize intellectuals. Thus was the beginning of the Ravi Zacharias International Ministries (RZIM) in August 1984. He was convinced and was later reaffirmed to him when he spent his sabbatical in Cambridge that the "important task in apologetics, namely, (is) to unmask the skeptic because his problem with God isn't an intellectual one, it is a moral one" (p.207).

As in Billy Graham autobiography, "Just As I Am", there are numerous interesting facts and observations we can make about his life.

First, we are all naturally curious about Ravi Zacharias. Who is he? What was his life story? What makes him ticks? In this short autobiography, we were given a short glimpse into his life. It is interesting that the subtitle of this book was "God in the Shadows". He sees the hand of God behind all the events of all life including his suicide attempt. He also alludes to his cultural heritage as a son of India and how that had influenced his life for the first 20 years. His struggles with his father were as prominent as his Indian cultural heritage. What was missing was how has the West formed him? Ravi Zacharias being who is today cannot be just a product of his Indian heritage.

Second, there are numerous accounts of how relationships formed him. His early group of friends when he was a teenager, the work of Youth for Christ when an older Christian spends time with him and his many mentors along the way. There is always someone in his darkest hours send to help him and many others along the way to help him grow. Again this autobiography reinforces the need to Christians, especially older Christians to reach out and mentor younger ones.

Third, the account about the Ravi Zacharias International Ministries was rather brief. He does make a note that he was not an administrator and that there were certain regrets and that if given another chance, he will not repeat again.

However we could learn more from his life if he shares more about his failures rather than his successes after he migrated to Canada. It seems from his account that after he left India, one success follows another until RZIM was formed. Overall this is an interesting overview of Ravi Zacharias' life until a more definitive biography comes along. The choice of the poem by James Russell Lowell from The Present Crisis (1844) seems appropriate:

Truth forever on the scaffold,

Wrong forever on the throne,-

Yet that scaffold sways the future,

And, behind the dim unknown,

Standeth God within the shadow,

Keeping watch above his own.

The story of a great apologist

This is the story of Ravi Zacharias, the international Christian apologist. The Indian born Zacharias, now based in Atlanta, has a worldwide ministry in defending the truth claims of Jesus Christ. Today he is perhaps the premier Christian apologist. He has spoken in over 50 nations; he has spoken at almost all the major universities of the world; he has discussed the big questions of life with political leaders, academics, religious leaders, and even military leaders; and he has written a number of excellent books on apologetics over the past 25 or so years.

This book contains his remarkable story. His humble beginnings did not seem to make him qualified for such a task. He was not raised as a Christian, and soon was a sceptic. He never did very well in school, nor try very hard to succeed in his education. While his brothers and sisters and peers were all doing very well, he was not. Thus by the time he was a teenager he had become very depressed and lonely.

Although good at sport - especially cricket - and surrounded with many great friends, he still felt very alone, and was constantly saddened that he had not pleased his father. His dad grew impatient with him, telling him he would never amount to anything. This growing sense of failure and despair, coupled with his father's disapproval, and his inner struggles and searching which he could not freely share with others, took its toll. So suicide was the only course of action for young Zacharias.

Shortly after his suicide attempt some Youth for Christ people helped to lead Zacharias to the Lord. The first half of this book details his years as a non-believer. The second half of the book chronicles his time as a believer, as a Christian evangelist, and as a renowned apologist. It includes his move to Canada, and later, the US. It chronicles his early evangelistic missions, and his studies at Trinity Seminary in Chicago, and his marriage to a Canadian woman.

It has been during the last three decades or so that he became convinced that there was a pressing need to reach intellectuals, academics, university students and others with the claims of Jesus Christ. He thus undertook further studies at Cambridge, and has since devoted his life to reaching sceptics and those of other - or no - faiths.

In this moving autobiography Zacharias speaks of many hardships and difficulties along the way, and the costs of serving the Lord. But he sees with hindsight the ways God was directing his paths and using past hurts - even his suicide attempt - as means to bring greater glory to God and to reach many who also are lost, struggling, hurting and in despair. And he notes how strong friends, mentors and counsellors have helped him along the way. As Zacharais says, "There is no greater discovery than seeing God as the author of your destiny."

Zacharias is absolutely right when he says, "Outside of the gospel, there are no answers for humanity's most fundamental questions". This powerful volume contains many stories of changed lives and hope restored. It deserves a wide reading.

This book gives a good insight to East Indian life and customs

This book gives a good insight to East Indian life and customs. It is a story of how God watched over a young boy because He had a plan for his life. Its a picture of how God is in the shadows of all of our lives if we would only take heed of the clues He leaves us. God has always raised men and women He could use in great ways and Ravi was one of these. I could hardly tear myself away from the book. It gripped me.

Learn more about one of today's best Christian Apologists

My in-laws recently moved to Oxford, England so that my father-in-law can pursue his PhD at the University. Luckily for me, Ravi Zacharias recently visited Oxford, and my favorite mother-in-law was able to get me a signed copy of this book that tells Ravi's life story.

Having listened to Ravi's radio shows, read his books, and pariticipated in one of his conferences, I have always been thoroughly impressed by his humble, yet insightful approach to apologetics. In this book, he let's the reader know more about his life, and how it has been shaped by God. It is a quick read that really shows how much God can change a life and use it for good. Ravi is a master storyteller, so it is a quick read that strings together the threads of his life in a meaningful, and powerful way.

As expected, I learned a lot from the book and was really encouraged to know that Ravi has faced several trials during his life, just like the rest of us. If you enjoy Ravi's books, or have listened to him speak then you will enjoy this book. In Paul Harvey's words...it tells the rest of the story. Enjoy.
