Description

Richard Shepherd trained as a doctor at St George's Hospital medical school at Hyde Park Corner, qualifying in 1977 and then completed his postgraduate training as a forensic pathologist in 1987. He immediately joined what was then the elite forensic department at Guy's Hospital. He has been involved nationally and internationally in the forensic investigation of thousands of deaths from unnatural causes, from headline-making murders to mass natural disasters, and many sudden and unexplained deaths that his investigations showed were from natural causes or due to accidents. His skills and expertise still remain in demand around the world. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. A great read

It’s hard to say just why I found this book and Dr. Shepherd’s story so gripping and moving. I got the Audible version that is read by the author. Normally, I prefer professional readers but he is excellent and his voice at times gives away his emotions which only adds. He deals with some fascinated cases and touches on a challenging childhood and his loving father.

The book covers a fascinating career with some wonderful characters and ends with a highly personal chapter. Dr. Shepherd comes across as a remarkable character, decent and humane. I was sorry to reach the end.

Amazing read

Unnatural Causes by Richard Shepherd.
Not normally something I would read as I am quite squeamish but saw a recommendation on my book club site so decided to break from the norm. I found it extremely hard in places to read but only because I have never been confronted by tragedy and have led a mostly uneventful life. When you hear and read about incidents that involve multiple casualties you never for one minute consider what goes on behind the scenes to repatriate the dead to their loved ones. This book opened my eyes and I gave great admiration for the writer and all his colleagues who remain hidden behind the scenes, going far beyond the call of duty to give relatives closure. Not only in public tragedies but in everyday situations too. Many thanks for an enlightening read. 5*

Dealing with Death Daily

Seldom do people share their innermost lives with others with the incredible insight and honesty as Dr. Shepherd does in his book about his life, both personally and professionally. Not only is it incredibly well-written but it contains little known facts about how a corpse communicates its life and death to the forensic pathologist. This book is so well-edited that you will never find yourself skimming the contents just to get on with it. There are several surprising cases where even a well-read person with medical knowledge is surprised by his conclusions regarding cause of death. This author is so humble and such a genuinely dedicated person that you wish you were his friend.
