"I like the everyday kind of experiences that the author draws into the discussions, such as the Art Tours in major art cities around the world.""Understanding Art" does take a newer view of the subject and is not just "art history lite." Lois Fichner-Rathus is professor of art in the Department of Art and Art History of The College of New Jersey. She holds a combined undergraduate degree in fine arts and art history, an M.A. from the Williams College Graduate Program in the History of Art, and a Ph.D. in the History, Theory, and Criticism of Art from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her areas of specialization include contemporary art, feminist art history and criticism, and modern art and architecture, as well as the theory and foundations of art and design. Dr. Fichner-Rathus is also the author of the Cengage Learning textbooks UNDERSTANDING ART and FOUNDATIONS OF ART AND DESIGN. She teaches study-abroad programs in Paris, Rome, Spain, and Cuba and resides in New York. Read more

DONT BUY THIS BOOK FROM AMAZON

The book is great, but DO NOT BUY IT FROM AMAZON. When you go to trade it back in they will refuse it and say it doesnt have the ecard that DID NOT ORIGINALLY COME WITH IT and even if it did it is a USED UP CARD and if you try to "trade-in" as "book only" THEY RETURN IT AND SAY ITS NOT THE SAME, even though I clicked on the very original order where I originally purchased it from Amazon. LAST TEXTBOOK I BUY FROM AMAZON.

I enjoyed this textbook and learned a lot!

Loved the class and the textbook! When I found Duchamp's The Fountain, I was quite angry that the Lois Fichner-Rathus put a urinal in the book calling it art!! Oh, I was livid, and griping to my family, until I read and understood what it was all about. I wrote a paper on Duchamp and his Fountain. What was amazing about this class was that the High in Atlanta, had an exhibit From Picasso to Warhol. I went 3 times to check out the works. there were several Duchamp which were interesting only because of the change he made in Art, and why. I never liked Picasso, but when I saw the Lady in the Mirror I fell in love! Now, Matisse's The Dance, was shocking! It was not what I thought it would be. You could see the outline of the figures he decided not to put in the painting.... I saw several Jackson Pollock, and Warhol had an entire room! So, enjoyed reading this textbook, learning and appreciating Art, and especially going to a Museum to see some of the works that were pictured in the book. There were works that were in the textbook on exhibit, but It has been years, and I don't remember exactly which they were.

Book did not come with the CourseMate eBook Access Card

I have to return this book because the rental copy does not come with the access card that is listed in the description. if you want the access card it cost $116.00 for the publisher. if i'm going to pay $60.00 for the rental and another $116.00 for the card, I might as will buy a new book for $170.00. Very disappointed with this transaction.

Understanding Art

To make a long story short, this book is really well-made and does a good job describing content and has good images in the books as well. It was a good pick by my art teacher and I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about art.

Great Book

We were able to use the order versions of this book for our class. But I kept this one, because I like new books and it had some interesting updates that the others did not have. It was well put together for the topics, and I really enjoyed having it for my class. Art Appreciation was a easy because I was able to have this book for a great reference point.

old

Book looked pretty old when I got it. Cover was also bent and the corner pages curled in. So I feel like I can't bring it with me to class so it doesn't get ruined any further.
