Compelling blend of warmth and icy fear

Parents of teens have all been there surely, at that point where the loving child turns into snarling monster and back; obedience and independence make war with each other, and the wisdom of age falls victim to a young person’s imagination. In Aaron Paul Lazar’s latest Gus LeGarde novel, Gus and Camille face Shelby’s moods with plenty of wisdom and patience. But even that’s not enough when Shelby gets the chance to meet her real father. Then tales of long-ago abuse become mere misunderstandings in youthful eyes. And the child, of course, knows better and knows less.

There’s a wonderful blend of peaceful family life and rural scenes with sudden shocks and terror in this tale. The author’s descriptions are consistently vivid and real, whether inviting his reader to savor the scents of a wonderful meal, or to share the joys of a trip to Canada. But a story that starts with a dead body under the ice can only grow colder, despite incipient warmth. Cold truths and fears lie in wait for Shelby and her family once she steps off the trail.

Vivid, real, compelling and exciting, Under the Ice offers redemption to those wounded by the past, and to those trapped into seeing those wounds repeated. The characters have an honest depth, and the story has honest hope. A thoroughly enjoyable read.
